THE SOUL OF A WRITER
I received yet another Christmas card talking about how the writer/sender subscribes to FundsforWriters to read this section...the Editor's Thoughts...more than any other part of the newsletter. This editorial is the heart of the newsletter, my voice, my thoughts at a specific moment in the week prior to its delivery. It's my section where I can let loose.
Sometimes people take issue with me. Some even unsubscribe. Some tell me to take another stance. I smile and think the childish comment: "It's my newsletter, and I'll say what I want."
We all need a place to spout off, I think. Maybe not radically, and definitely not to the level we alienate gobs of people, but to express ourselves.
But what's even better is when you make that leap into your fiction, or your nonfiction or poetry, and legitimately express yourself in that work as well. When you take that bridge, daring to write like the real you, then you've accomplished something. And part of that is voice.
When I write stories about Carolina Slade, I pen the words in first person. Originally, I did that in order to dig deeper into her head, and make her life more believable to the reader. Soon I began to infuse my thoughts into that stubborn hard head of hers. Then I incorporated her feelings about people...the same feelings I had about people I knew. Her love for South Carolina came through as my love for South Carolina. My fear of dark water became hers. My lake house became hers. My
children and friends became hers. Then the stories turned into a sense of coming home. When seated at the computer and diving into a scene, I smelled the smoke, quivered at the cool breeze off the water, heated up as Wayne walked into the room.
If I could wish anything for you in the new year it would be that you fall in love with your writing, not the idea of publishing. I would hope that you incorporate so much of yourself in your writing that you fear the world reading it...because they'd see inside your soul. That's what I wish for you.
That's how you find your best writing. Not just setting out a goal of five hundred words a day. When you're eager to sit and write, and that eagerness happens daily, you've hit the sweet spot.
Happy New Year.
~HOPE

WORDS OF SUCCESS
I have been successful probably because I have always realized that I knew nothing about writing and have merely tried to tell an interesting story entertainingly.

THE SHY WRITER
Introversion may seem like a major obstacle to building a successful writing career, but this wonderful “covers-all-the-bases” book handily debunks the notion. ~Peter Bowerman, Author “The Well-Fed Writer” series

On Lowcountry Bribe: With a story that moves so fast you are sure to get a case of literary whiplash, LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE is almost impossible to put down. KEEP THE FIRE BURNING
By Laura Lee Perkins
C. Hope Clark entered my life 11 years ago, just when I had made a 10-year commitment to improving my writing: entering more contests, applying for more grants and submitting more applications to publishers and for artist residencies. Hope sits on my desktop every day. When I need to remember that I am not alone in this writing struggle, feeling like bursting into tears after another rejection, I open the computer document titled "HOPE" and my world is transformed from despair into
opportunity with one simple click.
Here I find every snippet of fodder that I have carefully cut and pasted from C. Hope Clark's weekly FundsforWriters email. After doing this for several years, this document was pretty messy. One day I reorganized it: Book Publishers, Magazines, Grants, Jobs, Artist-in-Residencies, Workshops/Classes and Wisdom; perhaps the most important section because it included tips for remaining sane while striving for success. Within each category bold, italics and underline were added. I reduced the
font size down to 9 and narrowed the margins so I can get more opportunities on one page. And I have developed my own style of shorthand so that each opportunity can be reduced down to just two lines if at all possible. Why? Because I learned that once the document is over 25 pages long, it felt too cumbersome to peruse for the next opportunity. Some weeks I only do one category for the week, but about once a month I save an afternoon (usually Friday while I'm waiting for her newest email to
arrive) and I read through the entire document, slowly and carefully. I use text colors to make things pop visually and for the best opportunities I add highlighting. Now I have bold, italics, bold-italics, colored text, underlines, a variety of font styles and highlighting.
Deadlines passed. Offerings had to be deleted. I added a Submissions category where entries are carefully documented: fee, date, title and word count for each entry. Then the Rejected category which included any comments offered and finally my favorite; a YES/Accepted category. This list began to grow as I began to understand that writing is not a goal; writing is a process.
Every week I carefully cut and pasted anything that looked appealing re: publication or growth. I asked for opinions, joined a writer's group and began to teach. And I always kept the "HOPE" file updated every week. I sat at my computer late on Fridays waiting for the email to arrive. I learned to keep that document on my desktop because it added more kindling to my inner burning desire to write.
More than a decade has gone by and I have received ten grants. The first two were $10,000 each and came just a year apart. I came in 3rd in the Writers' Digest Inspirational category. I've self-published five books (sales of 5,000) and a publisher picked up one more. I've completed four Artist-in-Residencies for the U.S. National Parks and one for the Turkeyland Cove Foundation. I've had 150+ articles published in my areas of specialization (music/education/spiritual development) and
Lighting Your Spiritual Passion (Maine Authors Publishing) just came off the press. When it appeared on Amazon in Kindle, then paperback and on Smashwords, I cried for joy. The first newspaper article about it ran in the Lewiston, Maine Sun Journal and 423 people "liked" it on Facebook that day!
I take Hope's email very seriously. When it has been late arriving (seldom), dinner is delayed. It is that important. Hope encourages us to dream and she gives us innumerable reasons to never give up. Happy Writing!

authors transport their readers back in time to recognizable places with living and breathing people.
CAMINO BOOKS http://www.caminobooks.com/ --- Camino Books was founded in 1987 for the purpose of publishing quality nonfiction books of regional interest to people in the Middle Atlantic states. Our list is especially strong in titles about cooking, travel, gardening, and history, but we also publish biographies, local reference books, and books concerning parenting and important health issues. We occasionally publish books of national
interest as well. We currently publish about 6 to 10 books per year, and we are always looking for new material and projects.
CANTERBURY HOUSE PUBLISHING http://www.canterburyhousepublishing.com/ --- Canterbury House Publishing, Ltd. (CHP), publishes wholesome quality fiction and memoir of an inspirational nature and of the romantic suspense and mystery genres with an emphasis on colorful Southern U.S. regional settings.
CEDAR FORT http://cedarfort.com/submissions --- Whether or not a book is written specifically to the LDS market, all of our books should be suitable and uplifting for any group. Our authors believe, as do we, that books should inspire readers to be better people, and we strive to always publish books that are in harmony with that spirit. We are always on the lookout for new and exciting material that will capture the public's
interest. However, there are a few genres with which we are very selective. We rarely take biographies, autobiographies, or memoirs unless they have a very strong selling point (such as Mafia to Mormon). We do not publish poetry. Although we do publish a couple of children's books each year, we are extremely selective about which children's books we publish. Our children's books must have strong religious or moral values, and must contain outstanding writing and an excellent storyline.
