WHEN SOMEONE DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE AND YOU WANT TO TELL THEM SO
A friend of mine published a beautiful collection of short stories.
Someone gave her a one star review while admitting he hadn't read
the book yet. Another reviewer fussed about typos...two missed
commas.
Of course the first gut, knee-jerk instinct is to contact these
people and take issue with their comments. "How can you review
a book you haven't read, you moron!" "You comment about two little
commas and cannot comment on the quality of the writing? Seriously?"
Someone did the same for Lowcountry Bribe, talking about North
Carolina and other erroneous un-facts. Quickly, I wanted to
correct him. Then I decided first, I'd only bring attention to
the review, and second, I'd bring attention to my anger. So I
let the review be.
On a list group I belong to, someone recently commented about
how some publishers still do not want to consider self-published
books. She and others were not happy with that stance. I suggested
they let the poor publisher be since there are so many options out
there for writers. Why force-feed self-publishing on publishers
that opt out of dealing with them? It's their choice.
Be careful not to get sucked into conflict, especially online.
All of us have too little time to write, and getting caught up
into controversy only steals that time. So the next time you
want to vent about someone else's opinion online, consider:
1) Someone's first impression of you will be that controversial
fight you choose to take on.
2) Someone who likes your writing may not like your personal
stance on an issue.
3) You cannot coax everyone to like your writing.
4) You never know what makes some people make such comments, so
stay out of their heads because you'll just more than likely
fuel their fire.
In other words, you have better things to do . . . like write.

HAVE YOU READ TIDEWATER MURDER?

along with your link and bio for others to learn more about you!
Clark proves with Tidewater Murder that the success of Lowcountry Bribe
was no fluke. Her ability to beautifully paint a location continues to
transport the reader to South Carolina - this time to Beaufort county.
She twists and turns the plot so many times, you don't know who's in
Slade's corner and who's out for her head. Clark has created a character
in Slade that the reader feels invested in - you want to wring her neck
for careless decisions as often as you want to cheer her on for trusting
her intuition and doing the right thing. ~Matthew Jerdan, Charlotte, NC

WORDS OF SUCCESS
As a mystery author, I had to share this one. Gives me chills:
"When I got home I mixed a stiff one and stood by the open window
in the living room and sipped it and listened to the groundswell
of traffic on Laurel Canyon Boulevard and looked at the glare of
the big angry city hanging over the shoulder of the hills through
which the boulevard had been cut. Far off the banshee wail of police
or fire sirens rose and fell, never for very long completely silent.
Twenty four hours a day somebody is running, somebody else is trying
to catch him. Out there in the night of a thousand crimes, people
were dying, being maimed, cut by flying glass, crushed against
steering wheels or under heavy tires. People were being beaten,
robbed, strangled, raped, and murdered. People were hungry, sick;
bored, desperate with loneliness or remorse or fear, angry, cruel,
feverish, shaken by sobs. A city no worse than others, a city rich
and vigorous and full of pride, a city lost and beaten and full of
emptiness. It all depends on where you sit and what your own private
score is. I didn’t have one. I didn’t care. I finished the drink and
went to bed."

All Aboard! 5 Tips to Launching Successful Blog Tours
By Jennifer Brown Banks
With publishing budgets decreasing, today’s writer has to be
inventive, strategic, cost conscious, and smart to get the word
out about his book, and make the most of his “15 minutes of fame.”
Accordingly, many are finding the answer in virtual Blog Tours.
For the uninitiated, Blog Tours are scheduled “stops” to targeted
sites, whereby the author promotes his book through a number of
methods, such as: guest posts, reviews, give-aways, and featured
interviews.
Though the time frame and number of stops varies, it’s typically
5-10 sites within a four week period. Think of it like a ten city
booking, minus the “stage fright” and travel expense.
What are some of the benefits to writers who are “on board” with
this promotional tool?
Blog Tours allow authors to increase their exposure. “There is
strength in numbers.” Targeted sites sometimes have thousands of
subscribers and social media buddies that can bring in potential
book sales on a much larger scale than if authors were to promote
through their efforts alone.
Blog Tours can help to generate a “buzz” about books and creative
projects for a considerable period of time between “Tweets”,
Facebook discussions, reviews and recommendations. Thereby providing
the tour with “extended dates”.
Blog Tours can save time, money and shoe leather for those seeking
to “work smarter, not harder.”
Blog Tours can help to build relationships with other bloggers and
offer mutual support.
To make the most of yours, here are a few tips to optimize your efforts.
1. Do your homework. Not all sites are created equally. Before embarking
on your journey, consider your goals, the desired readership, and the
reputation of the blog. Though you can have a wonderful experience at
any number of sites within popular niches, to get more bang for your
buck, tour those with at least 100 followers, an “active community”
or a Google Page Rank of at least a 3.
2. Be prepared to become actively involved in the process.
In other words, you’ll get out of it what you put into it. Respond in
a timely fashion to readers’ questions and comments. Be gracious. By
doing so, you’ll make a good first impression, and avoid the risk of
alienating blog owners and potential fans.
3. Decide whether you will pitch sites yourself, or have a company
provide this promotional service for you. For example sites like WOW!
http://www.wow-womenonwriting.com/ Will schedule your tour for highly
trafficked sites for a small fee. A similar service is offered by
Virtual Book Tours Café, http://www.virtualbooktourcafe.com/index.html
4. Provide unique content with great take-away value. Many blogs
within the same niche have “cross-over readership”. So to avoid
redundancy and duplication of your “message” tweak your posts and
answers to present a different angle and a broader view of who you
are and why readers should buy your book as opposed to the
competition’s, (or in addition to).
5. Keep a spread sheet of your stops and “itinerary” to prevent
conflicts in time or resources. The less confusion, the greater
your odds for overall success.
Follow these five timely tips to maximize your marketing efforts,
increase your exposure and your bottom line as an author.
