FROM A LITERARY AGENCY'S WEBSITE
We'd all love to know what an agent wants in a query. It's an elusive
target to match what we're writing with what any agent would want.
For instance, here's what's posted on one agent's website:
"...eager to work with projects in most genres as long as the
subject or its treatment is smart, original, and will appeal to
a wide readership."
So...anything goes, more or less. What we call smart might not be
what he calls smart. What we think is original might not be to him
because he just read four other queries on the same topic. Or what
we think appeals to a wide readership is a niche market to him
because he's not familiar with the widespread interest of your theme.
In other words, landing an agent (and a publisher) takes:
1) good writing,
2) good querying,
3) good timing,
4) good match of an agent's knowledge to yours,
5) and luck.
When the gurus in this business say how important it is to match
an agent with the author, it's so true. It's quite critical, as a
matter of fact. If you write about cake decorators and the agent
has no clue about the field, then he might not understand how unique
your presentation is.
Lowcountry Bribe, and the entire Carolina Slade Series, is centered
in rural South Carolina, and incorporates a taste of agriculture at
times (the bad guy in book one is a hog farmer). To an agent reared
in New York City, such a book is not going to capture his attention.
So I sought an agent who had roots in the country, and we pitched
publishers who had roots in the South.
So landing an agent, and subsequently a publisher, is half crap-shoot.
But the parts you can control, writing and querying and selection of
whom to query, is in your hands. Those aspects you can groom and hone
to your best.
But the timing and luck just happen...or they don't. Don't beat
yourself up when you only have control over three of five aspects
of agent querying. The point is to keep massaging those things in
your grasp...and keep submitting.
You have complete control over whether you give up.

HAVE YOU READ TIDEWATER MURDER?
If so, please consider a review on Amazon or Goodreads.
http://www.amazon.com/Tidewater-Murder-Carolina-Mystery-ebook/dp/B00CHT2PT6/
Send your latest review of Tidewater Murder to Amazon or Goodreads
and copy it to Hope. Reviews will be chosen for the newsletter,
along with your link and bio for others to learn more about you!
I read C. Hope Clark's first book, Lowcountry Bribe, because I saw it on the
"Daily Kindle Deal." I figured that with $1.99 you could not go wrong. I was
not sure I was interested in agriculture, but I started it.....and then was
astounded at how good it was. I could not put it down. This second
installment does not disappoint! Carolina Slade is a complex character.
She is tough, sassy, strong, and yet at times, vulnerable. I stayed up way
too late with this story, which is the mark of a great book. I absolutely
cannot wait for her next book! ~Stephen Scarborough

THE SHY WRITER REBORN
An Introvert's Wake-Up Call
I love The Shy Writer Reborn! As a self-diagnosed introvert, I know the
fears of many writers who are literally afraid to follow their passion
and be successful. C. Hope Clark shares how to overcome that fear while
navigating interviews, pitches, queries, and more. She even finishes the
book with a great set of mantras! If you’re a shy writer, this is the
book that will help you find and cultivate an audience for your writing.
-Robert Lee Brewer, Senior Content Editor, Writer’s Market
Tidewater Murder . . .
Floating suspended in the liquid darkness, arms and legs extended,
I dared a look. Pitch black. Something soft brushed my leg. My
heart leaped, and I slammed my eyes shut again, more afraid to
see a shark come at me than one catching me by surprise. The
pressure in my lungs blossomed to pain. I tried to think about
fields, pastures, anything connected to dirt instead of water.

WORDS OF SUCCESS
No man who bothers about originality will ever be original:
whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring
twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine
times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.

MY WRITING DAILY MANTRA
By C. Hope Clark
Wherever I speak, I'm quick to say..."Write daily." Whether people
realize it or not, I see their eyes roll. Heck, I read their body
language even if they're just thinking about rolling their eyes.
It's because writing daily is hard; it's almost impossible...
or that's what everyone seems to think.
Before I tell you how to write daily, here's the why:
1) Your writing gets stale.
When you don't run, you slow down and your body parts don't perform
as well. Same goes for your mental parts. When your head is in the
craft every single day, you develop a keener edge. Your brain keeps
writing in the forefront, keeps it working in the background...heck,
keeps it working in your sleep!
2) You lose your story line.
I'm in that situation right now. I was smoking on a new novel. Had
tons of outline and scene material, snippets of what my character
needs to say and do, how her sidekick needs to respond, how the
antagonist needs to scheme. Then my son and his wife moved to town
and were in the throws of renovating an old house. I started a daily
trek over there to peel wallpaper, paint, sand, etc. The notes are
still in front of me, but after ten hours of standing and stooping,
my legs, feet and hands aching, I didn't have the momentum any longer.
Now I'm reacclimating myself with the story. And I'm taking myself
out of town, to the setting of the book (the beach), and writing to
get myself back into it. If I'd written daily, I wouldn't have to do
all that (though the beach idea isn't bad, regardless).
3) You lose momentum on sales.
If you have material available for sale now, and you don't continually
make connections to promote it, talk about it, interview about it, then
sales drop. Trust me. I've had it happen because I've gotten wrapped in
what we call LIFE. I'd forgotten that LIFE includes my sales, because
I'm not happy if my writing isn't working itself into the hands of
readers. But when we slack off letting everyone know about our work,
the work just sits on the shelf.
4) You lose momentum on platform building.
You develop a platform, followers, peers and sponsors by being visible.
You react with what they are doing, and you present yourself as much
as possible in chats, forums, social media as well as in person.
Waiting until you have time once a month, or in the summer, or on
the weekends results in a very sluggish platform. It builds slow, if
it builds at all. Be there. Be seen. Which leads to the last one...
5) People forget you.
Out of sight, out of mind. This business moves fast, and thousands
of books are published daily. So if you aren't producing work and
if you aren't presenting yourself, you don't exist.
The only exception to all of this is when you are getting started.
In that case, you are testing the water, trying to determine what
to write and how to write it. In that case, your daily exercise is
just writing...practicing...putting effort into your writing muscles
to build them up to the point where you can write that story, that
novel, that series.
But...HOW do you write daily? HOW do you start a habit when your
day is already filled?
1) Write 15 minutes each day without fail.
2) Dissect your life and decide what you can cut back or do without.
You aren't Superman or Wonder Woman. You have no super speed. And
chances are you don't have time to kill. Pick one item in your life
for which you can substitute writing. I gave up tennis. I eventually
gave up the day job.
3) Tell your friends and family that you take this writing thing
seriously. Then TAKE it seriously so they learn from your example.
There you go! If you still say you have no time, then you've made your
choice. Writing is a lesser priority for you. There is absolutely
nothing wrong with that. But if you are aching to write, something has
to go...and you have to commit to a daily routine to start your journey.
