BUILDING A NETWORK
The Web abounds with writers who ponder how to develop that
proverbial network that's supposed to represent their 1,000
true fans...those fans who are supposed to make our growth
possible. Those fans who want anything we have to offer, and tell
others about it. In case you are not familiar with the concept,

But writers fail to build these fans. Either they are blind to the
opportunities when they present themselves, or they profess they
have no time. In either case, they set themselves up to fail. And
when they need those fans the most, they fuss about not having them.
I know you have limited time. Every other person on the planet has
limited time. The successful manage their time more efficiently.
So it's on you, my friend. That is, assuming you seriously want
to be a writer.
So . . . to earn those true-blue 1,000 fans, you need to:
1) Return emails to anyone with the slightest interest in your work,
without exception. Regardless of what you think of them, regardless
of how serious you think they are about their writing, regardless
of how quirky, angry, bubble-headed, or tacky they are. You are not
in this business to judge. You are in this business to write, and
in this effort, you have no right to be selective about who has the
potential to like your work. In other words, enjoy anyone who likes
reading and writing. We're all different. There is no right or wrong.
2) At conferences, collect those business cards, and upon your return
home, reach out and rejuvenate that connection. Be gracious.
3) Be liberal in your Facebook and Twitter connections and friends.
4) Be bold in your profiles on any online resource (Twitter, Facebook,
Goodreads, Amazon, Pinterest, Google, LinkedIn, etc.). Liberal means
being upfront about what type writer you are. Show others you mean
business in this writing business.
5) Reach out. Whether you have a newsletter or keep a blog, communicate.
If you don't have time for your fans, why should they have time for you?
6) Smile. Enjoy others company. Appreciate people.
Sounds like work, doesn't it. Duh! Of course it is. But it's the
most rewarding work, outside of writing your stories, that you can
accomplish. Assuming you want to put WRITER on your tax return
under PROFESSION.

Greetings Hope,
My name is Vincent Viñas. I'm a writer living in the Tampa Bay area
of Florida. I've been subscribed to your wonderful newsletter for
some time now. Last year I queried a publishing company you featured
in your listings by the name of Ink Smith Publishing. They requested
my manuscript and last November offered me a contract to publish my
debut novel, The Funeral Portrait. The book is now out in e-book and
paperback editions. I couldn't be happier at this accomplishment, not
to mention how proud and supportive my wife, family and friends have
been. To celebrate the book's release I decided to put together a
tribute to my Mother (who I've been promising I would publish a book since
the 5th grade.) She is a Breast Cancer survivor and I wanted to do something
nice in her honor so I made it that from the book's release date (May 23,
2013) until July 2nd, a dollar from every book I sell will go towards Breast
Cancer research. On top of that, my publisher immediately agreed to match
whatever I bring in, which was an amazing gesture. It's just my small way
of trying to make the world a better place for others. I'm also running a
contest where I'm having people post pictures of their copies of my book
(or a picture of their e-readers showcasing the book) until August 1st
and will be giving away a few cool prizes. People that answer a specific
question about the book get an additional entry.
It's all such an exciting time that I had to take a moment to thank you.

How to Parlay Your Consumer Magazine Experience into Trade Magazine Success

I often find, at parties and at networking events, that even fellow
journalists are rarely intrigued by the trade magazine work that I
do. They want to know the stories behind The New York Times articles,
the difficulty of breaking into Time, the experience of working with
The Christian Science Monitor. Even among the readers of my blog who
frequently e-mail me with questions, I’ve never once had a writer ask
me, “Could you please tell me how to break into the trades?”
The truth, however, is that some of the best work I’ve done is for
trade publications. Some of the coolest reporting stories I have to
share have been made possible because these publications had the funds
to send me to strange places to cover even stranger topics. The topics
and the trade publications may not seem sexy, but the fatter paycheck,
the friendly editors, and the challenge of discovering new and exciting
fields certainly make them worth the effort of querying.
If you haven’t had much luck with trade magazines so far, here are five
quick ways you can parlay your consumer magazine or newspaper experience
for the trades:
1. Take a consumer magazine or newspaper article you’ve written and
identify the major trades in that story. For instance, I once wrote a
piece for a national women’s magazine about women-only trains in India.
I didn’t ever think it could be a trade story, so I was really surprised
when an editor at “Trains” magazine paid me to reprint the story. If you
look closely, you’ll find at least one major identifiable trade in every
story that you write. Find a magazine that caters to that trade. Pitch it.
2. Most trade magazines are not dull, dry, and dreary, like the writing
gurus would have you believe. Many of them feature articles that are
written with just as much craft and care as those in consumer publications.
I have won an award for a story I wrote for a trade that resonated with
the judges because of its human aspect. Look through national and regional
magazines and find ideas that could potentially work for trade magazines.
I often find new and breaking stories in the New York Times or the Wall
Street Journal that other freelancers haven’t thought to pitch to trade
magazine editors.
3. Tie your ideas to current events. When the Commonwealth Games came to
Delhi in 2010, most freelancers I knew were (unsuccessfully) pitching to
major newspapers and magazines. I, instead offered stories to a
construction magazine and an engineering news magazine and earned several
thousand dollars and a cover story.
4. When you travel, don’t forget to target these magazines. The trades
have several US-based writers they can hire regularly but their networks
are limited abroad. If you’re traveling out of the country, e-mail some
of the trade magazine editors (even if you don’t know them) and offer to
bring back something. The best-case scenario is that editors might just
hand you assignments of their own even before you’ve left and the worst
case is that you may come back with some fascinating ideas and an already
established relationship with an editor.
5. Everything is a trade. Think about the truth of that statement for a
minute. No matter what you’re writing about, you can find a trade magazine
angle to it. And once you start noticing that potential, you’ll never run
out of markets for your work.

The Bernheim Forest Writing Residency is located in a beautiful,
14,000 acre forest and nature preserve located near Louisville, KY.
The writer receives a $500 honorarium, and resides, for at least 4
weeks, and up to 12 weeks, in a furnished cabin, on the grounds of
Bernheim offering all of the modern domestic necessities. The period
of the residency is dependent, in part, on Bernheim's overall schedule
of visiting artists and writers, but will begin no earlier than late
summer 2013. In turn, the writer has an immense amount of say as to
when they occupy the residency, having the ability to delay beginning
the residency for up to a year of being awarded the residency.
