YOUR VOICE IS LIKE A RECIPE
The hardest thing for me to describe to a new writer is voice.
At a recent conference, during an informal gathering, a new writer
asked how to identify voice. I gave her authors' names and showed
her how they had distinct voices. She recognized theirs, but she
was still confused how to identify her own.
Then I read a blog post about developing your own recipes, and how
good cooks start off reading other recipes, then altering them as
they deem necessary. Soon they have original dishes, after trial
and error, insertions and deletions, embellishing and withdrawing.
The same goes for writing.
Recently, I heard a new writer say she didn't have time to read
very much. I hate that, because reading other work is the best
teaching tool out there. Not conferences, not degrees, not how-to
books, not that those don't help. However, since the beginning of
time, it's been proven that the best way to learn anything is by
emulating the successful who have gone before you.
I've heard some writers say they are afraid they will copy who
they read. Nah. Ain't gonna happen. You are not as good as they
are, and trust me, you will not pull it off like they do. They
have their voice. They know what they're doing. You may still be
searching.
I believe that reading the masters (i.e., successful authors who
write in the genre you write) teaches you what works. You may even
try writing like them. One author, then another author, then yet
another. They are in your head as you fight a chapter - the action,
the character development, the plot formulation. You study one
author for one aspect, then grab another for yet a different facet.
Go ahead and copy them. You're going to edit the book anyway.
Because a funny thing happens between Chapter One and Chapter Thirty.
Your writing grows. You start winging it several chapters into the
story. You aren't so quick to copy, and get quicker at making up
your own stuff.
You reach Chapter Thirty and then...you go back and read the first
few chapters. Wow. You write better than what you put in the opening
chapters, and you learned it as you fought your way to the final
chapters. That's when you start with Chapter One and edit away,
using the new voice that seems to ooze out here and there. You edit
all the way through the book. Then you go back and look at Chapters
One through Ten or so again.
Dang it! You discover your voice grew again! You write better in the
end than you did in the beginning of the story. So...you edit the
book again. You do this over and over and over. Twenty times or
more, if necessary. As long as you feel your ending sounds better
than the beginning, you rewrite, until your voice is uniform
throughout.
A handful of you will think your book is good after the second draft,
and you would be wrong. All those edits are necessary to build
that elusive voice. Aren't sure you have your voice defined yet?
Keep reading the masters, copying the masters, writing beginning
to end, and rewriting over and over.
So, what does this have to do with a recipe? When you first make
a dish, you use a recipe perfected by someone else...a master of
that dish. Weeks later you make it again. Then for another occasion
you make it again. The funny thing is...each time you decide to
tweak it a bit. More vanilla, less salt. Pecans instead of walnuts.
One less egg yolk or one more tablespoon of butter. Ginger instead
of nutmeg. Before long, after redoing that dish over and over, you
have altered it into a recipe of your own.

-- Kelly L. Stone, author of TIME TO WRITE: No Excuses, No Distractions,
No More Blank Pages (Adams Media)
Floating suspended in the liquid darkness, arms and legs extended,
I dared a look. Pitch black. Something soft brushed my leg. My
heart leaped, and I slammed my eyes shut again, more afraid to
see a shark come at me than one catching me by surprise. The
pressure in my lungs blossomed to pain. I tried to think about
fields, pastures, anything connected to dirt instead of water.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
My eyes fondle an acceptance letter from Guideposts Magazine and
a check for my article that will appear in the June edition. On
the desk is my new business card announcing Lucy’s Lines ‘N Lyrics,
an opportunity to pen songs and poems for parties and events. I now
understand the truth that your newsletter affirms-- funds DO come
to writers who just keep writing.
Since retirement I discovered great joy in following my new muse.
I take creative writing classes at the local university, joined a
writing support group and book club, and faithfully read FUNDS FOR
WRITERS. You offer hope to me and other aspiring writers through
your words of wisdom. My advice to others: If you value your writing,
others will also. Don’t give away your work for free!
Thank you again for your inspiration and encouragement,
How to Find Anchor Clients and Earn a Consistent Income
By Jennifer Brown Banks
If you’re like most freelance writers, you probably prefer penning
pieces to marketing your creative services. But, the harsh reality
is, in order for you to sustain your business and stay in the black,
you must sell what you create.
Still, few would argue that scouring job boards weekly, bidding for
gigs, and pitching editors and potential clients can be time consuming.
And time is money. For this reason, your goal in 2013 should be to
add more Anchor Clients to your roster.
What are Anchor Clients?
Anchor clients are businesses or individuals with whom you have an
ongoing relationship and a steady flow of projects and income. This
would be in contrast to those for whom you perform an occasional task,
or one time, with no repeat work.
Anchor Clients benefit your business in three major ways:
1. They help to break the feast or famine cycle of sporadic income.
Having them allows you to plan better, by knowing realistically what
to expect, (and from whom), on a monthly basis. This can provide for
a better quality of life and less related stress.
2. They help you to work “smarter, not harder”. The more Anchor
Clients, the less time typically devoted to drumming up new business
to pay the bills and stay afloat. With the time you save, you could
learn a new skill, provide an additional service, or even read more
books to hone your craft and become more competitive.
3. Anchor Clients are excellent referral sources. Who better to spread
the word about your business than an existing satisfied customer?
Though these types of clients come in as many shapes and forms as
freelance writing itself, here are a few common ones I’ve garnered
over the years. And with a little creativity, you can too.
Client type:
Businesses with blogs that need updated content
Strategy:
Blogs are the new black. Over the last few years, I have crafted
posts for companies (seeking greater visibility and a broader
customer base), ranging from $50 to $100 per blog post. The vast
majority of these listings were found by strategically researching
top-tier blogging sites such as Bloggingpro.com and Problogger.net.
Once you make the final cut, payments and assignments are usually
reliable and consistent. Expect these positions to last anywhere from
six months to two years.
Client type:
Craigslist Posters
Strategy:
Not only does Craigslist provide an abundance of creative projects
in virtually every major city; it’s easy to navigate and weed out
the ones that are not worth your time fairly quickly. But don’t stop
there. Below every posted position, in the area that lists the
compensation, there is also a section that allows for additional
opportunities. It reads: It’s okay to contact this poster with
services or other commercial interests. Use this “in” to introduce
your business and to make important connections that could potentially
lead to lucrative work.
Client type:
Aspiring writers or College students who need tutoring assistance with
writing classes
Strategy:
List your services at a placement site like Thumbtack.com. Based in
California, Thumbtack’s mission is to: help small, local businesses
find new clients. Signing up is free, and is available in all 50
states. Since I joined, I have gotten numerous leads on everything
from individuals seeking ghost writing services, to college students
needing tutoring in creative writing, to editing positions. Leads are
both emailed and sent via text messages on the average of two to three
times a month.
This year, resolve to break free of the feast and famine cycle and
earn a respectable income you can live with.
