THEY GOTTA KNOW SOMEBODY
When we see the same names appear in bookstores, in magazines, as
guest bloggers, as contests winners, as grant winners, the first
thought that crosses most of our minds is this:
They gotta know somebody.
I'm going to do my best to change that mindset for you. Why?
Because it's not always right. Frankly, there's more wrong
with it than right.
As editor of FundsforWriters, I solicit guest articles. If you
go through the archives, you'll notice that the names of several
contributors repeat. I've never met these people. We're not
related. They can't offer me anything special. What's happened
is they've figured out the puzzle.
Somewhere along the line, these writers put the pieces together
in their head as to what I want in FundsforWriters. They've
defined the voice, topic matter, word count, and style. So
when they pitch me, they have a higher than 50/50 chance of
being accepted. No favoritism at all.
As a result, when I see their names come across my email, my
hopes rise that I'll read a clean, succinct, appropriate article
that suits my needs. Little editing, little discussion, just a
straight-forward fulfillment. That makes me happy.
So, when a magazine editor finds a freelancer who "gets it" about
his magazine, he'll lean toward giving that freelancer more gigs.
Guess what? This happens all across the writing environment.
In the grant world, you see writers/artists with multiple grant
wins under their belt. That's because they've learned how to give
judges what they want. As a result, when they apply to other grants,
those judges see the past grants and sense this person knows what
she wants, knows how to fill out grant applications, and understands
the relationship between grantor and grantee. Voila...better odds
of winning the grant.
In the publishing world, everyone knows it's hard for a newbie to
land a contract. But if the writer has a book that has sold decently,
not even a bestseller or blockbuster, they have a better chance of
signing another contract.
It's called earning experience and figuring out the game.
For those of you who still profess it's "who you know," let's
look at it from your angle. An author recommends a friend of his.
A freelancer recommends a friend. An editor pulls in a writer he
knows. The person rarely gets the gig without being able to
pull off the task, meeting the guidelines. Those who pull in
friends and offer opportunity usually do so knowing they can
do the job. If they screw up, they fail...and the person who
recommended them wears mud on their face, and their career.
There's still accountability in this business. Give writers
who publish the credit they've worked hard to earn. Then go
out there and earn some yourself.

THE SHY WRITER REBORN is out!
An Introvert's Wake-Up Call
This is not a book to make you enjoy being extroverted. It's not
a drama manual or a mental adjustment how-to that makes you
something you're not. This is a book to help you deal with the
world of writing in your own fashion. It's a book to show you
that it's natural to feel like you do...to show you there are
others feeling the same. It's okay to be a shy writer.
www.amazon.com/The-Shy-Writer-Reborn-Introverted/dp/0988974509/
The Shy Writer Reborn is now available on Amazon in print, and
on Kindle, Scribd, Kobo, Copia and Nook in ebook.
I love The Shy Writer Reborn! As a self-diagnosed introvert, I
know the fears of many writers who are literally afraid to follow
their passion and be successful. C. Hope Clark shares how to
overcome that fear while navigating interviews, pitches, queries,
and more. She even finishes the book with a great set of mantras!
If you’re a shy writer, this is the book that will help you find
and cultivate an audience for your writing.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope,
Can you handle one more thank you? I thought so. A few weeks ago
you published Chicken Soup's call for stories about kids on the
autism spectrum. I copied and pasted the information and passed
it on to my writer friend who has twin boys on the spectrum. She
made the cut and her story will be in Chicken Soup for the Soul:
Raising Kids on the Spectrum, to be released in a couple of weeks.
It is her first "biggie," and she is on cloud nine.
A few weeks after that announcement, you published a call for
stories for Chicken Soup's 20th anniversary edition. I wrote
"Always a Teacher," submitted it, and learned last week that my
story has been selected for publication. Yahoo. I guess I should
have asked if you could handle TWO more thank yous, right? You're
a gem. Thank you. Thank you.
Write What You Know: Write Local
By Ada Igoe
Eat local. Shop local. Write local?
Despite the pull of well-known glossy magazines and large circulation
newspapers when considering places to query or submit, tapping local
publications and organizations for writing jobs often means steady
income, a growing writing portfolio and interesting story assignments.
When you write locally, you possess the advantage of familiarity, if
not with the editor, at least with the publication and community it
serves. Although local publications often can't pay as well as larger
publications and article assignments aren’t always riveting (how do
you put a fresh spin on the annual lutefisk feed this year?), the
less competitive nature of the smaller market makes it far more
likely that a local editor will take a chance on you and your writing
skills.
Writing consistently for local markets will teach you to brainstorm
ideas, research articles, conduct interviews, meet word counts, write
captions, and meet deadlines. A job well done on an assignment for a
local publication arms you with the framework for an article you can
query regionally or nationally.
Just think of all of the businesses and organizations in your
community that could benefit from your writing skills right now:
Local publications
Don’t assume the local paper is the only publication in need of writers.
That glossy little magazine you pick up for free in the grocery store?
They need writers. That tabloid-sized real estate guide with articles
in front about local happenings that arrives in your mailbox each month?
They need writers too.
To get your foot in the door, arrange an in-person meeting with
the editor or write a friendly, but professional email introducing
yourself to the editor. Let the editor know if you have clips from
previously published work and be prepared with a few article ideas
to pitch the editor if they express interest in working with you.
Tourism organizations
Local tourism organizations such as visitors' bureaus or chambers of
commerce probably create more written content about your area than
any other business in town. Contact the director of your local tourism
organization to see if they need assistance churning out print or web
content. Be flexible and creative when considering how you can help
promote the local area. You could write traditional articles (like
lists of the best day hikes in the areas) for print publications,
proofread monthly e-newsletters, pull together content for calendar
of events, write an area blog, or regularly update area social media
accounts.
Nonprofits
Nonprofits always benefit from the skills of a confident (and
competent) writer. Offer to assist a local nonprofit you care about
by writing and submitting articles about the nonprofit's work to
area publications, writing financial campaign "ask" letters, updating
websites and blogs, coordinating and writing newsletters, preparing
press releases, assisting with grant proposals, or proofreading
outgoing documents.
Start Ups
If you hear of a new business in your community, reach out and offer
to write press releases, website content, ad copy, brochures, and
introductory letters. You could also proofread or tighten copy they
already have. Every business does better with a compelling story; be
the person who writes those stories.
Don’t give up your dreams of writing for Cosmo or the New York Times.
Instead, use local markets as stepping stones to your lofty literary
aspirations, all the while giving your writing muscles regular workouts.
