We had no children or grandchildren around for the Easter weekend,
so we let Roo have an Easter egg hunt of her own. She loved finding
the eggs filled with doggie treats and spent most of the day
enjoying a gorgeous, and finally warm, Good Friday outside with us.

WHERE TO GET THE MONEY TO WRITE A BOOK
This is the most common request I receive.
"Where can I find the money to write my book?"
This is the second most common request I receive.
"Where can I find the money to publish my book?"
First and foremost, you do not need money to write a book.
Writing is the most liberating, free-rein, no start-up money
required art on the planet. You and the paper. If you need
research, you have a phone, the Internet and the library.
Easy-peasy.
If you need money to publish your book, you are self-publishing.
Fine. Nothing wrong with that. Let's make some assumptions here.
You wrote the story. You've edited the story. You've HAD the story
edited. You want that book out in the world and you don't have two
dimes to rub together. What do you do?
1. You try to traditionally publish.
Yep, this means you have to learn the publishing business.
But you want complete control over your book, you say. Do you even
know what that means? Can you talk traditional vs. self-pubbing?
If you cannot, then stop trying to publish. Learn which road to
take before get totally lost and ruin that story by publishing it
too soon and too naively.
2. You publish an e-book.
I know you want to hold paper in your hands, but why not sell
e-books until you have the money saved to pay for print?
3. You publish through CreateSpace.com or Lulu.com.
This requires you understand formatting, cover design, and so on.
If you want someone to publish your book without you thinking
about these things, then go back to Item 1.
4. You crowdfund through Kickstarter.com or Indiegogo.com.
Not only has Kickstarter funded many books, plays and films, but
it makes you develop a defined plan for your book project.
Most crowdfunding projects fail because the author doesn't want
to think marketing or development . . . doesn't plan deeply enough.
Either that or the book is a bad idea to start with.
5. You freelance and save your money from articles and gigs to
pay for the publishing. No elaboration needed here. If you think
you're good enough to write a book, you should be shrewd and
talented enough to make money freelancing.
6. You save money from other sources.
Only you can define your "other" sources.
7. You borrow the money.
Gasp! Borrow? What if the book fails? Truth is you need to believe
in this book hard enough to be willing to borrow money for it.
That means you're more likely to do your homework on the process,
edit a few more times, create the start of a platform, and design a
short-term and long-term plan.
What about grants? Grants should be your last resort. Besides, most
grants won't fund a self-published project, especially from a first-
time author or a second-timer who didn't sell the first. You have to
prove yourself to a certain degree. But hey, with all of the above
options and a little bit of elbow grease and sweat, you'll be
published in no time.

THE SHY WRITER REBORN is out!
An Introvert's Wake-Up Call
This is not a book to make you enjoy being extroverted. It's not
a drama manual or a mental adjustment how-to that makes you
something you're not. This is a book to help you deal with the
world of writing in your own fashion. It's a book to show you
that it's natural to feel like you do...to show you there are
others feeling the same. It's okay to be a shy writer.

WORDS OF SUCCESS
People on the outside think there’s something magical about writing,
that you go up in the attic at midnight and cast the bones and come
down in the morning with a story, but it isn’t like that. You sit
in back of the typewriter and you work, and that’s all there is to it.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope:
I just wanted to send you a quick word of appreciation. This week
I learned I'd been selected for the 2014 Arts & Sciences Expedition
to the Arctic Circle--an opportunity I learned about through Total
Funds for Writers. This news comes a mere month after one of my
plays was named a finalist for a national award--which I had also
learned about through Total Funds for Writers. Your newsletter has
become my most valuable resource for submission opportunities, and
I am so grateful. If I can ever repay the favor with an online
testimonial, I hope you won't hesitate to ask.
Thank you, again.
Best,
Elizabeth Bagby
Earning Money in the Beginning Readers and Chapter Books Market
by Nancy I. Sanders
Writing beginning readers and chapter books has been the bread
and butter of my career. Over the years, I’ve written more than
400 beginning reader stories that have been published in a variety
of formats including a bestselling book with Scholastic Teaching
Resources, 25 Read and Write Mini-Books That Teach Word Families.
This book of 25 reproducible beginning reader stories has sold
over 250,000 copies to date.
If you’d like to try your hand in this field that is full of
variety and fun, here is an overview of some of the opportunities
available.
Trade Book Market
Dr. Seuss invented beginning readers in the trade book market
with his book, The Cat in the Hat. Since then most of the big
publishing houses have developed their own line of beginning
readers. This market is tight, but not impossible to break into.
For example, if you’re represented by an agent, you can submit
beginning readers to the big houses such as Random House. Or if
you write a successful picture book (such as Fancy Nancy or A
Visitor for Bear) your publisher might want to turn it into a
beginning reader series. And at the chapter book level, even
smaller publishers who do not require agented submissions are
always looking for the next great series such as the all-time
favorite, The Magic Tree House.
The Educational Market
Teachers as well as homeschooling parents use beginning readers
in the form of mini-plays, mini-books, and reproducible stories.
They can photocopy these and put them in the hands of their students
to help them learn how to read. Visit your local teacher’s supply
store to look for publishers such as Creative Teaching Press who
publish books of reproducible beginning readers for teachers.
Search on Amazon see more examples of their stories using the
“Look Inside” feature.
The ESL Market
There is a variety of opportunity to earn income writing for the
English as a Second Language (ESL) market. Publishers for this
market need beginning reader materials in a wide range of formats
for students from preschool through adult. To learn more about
exciting opportunities available to writers of all levels, explore
sites such as:
TESOL at www.tesol.org
ESL Magazine at www.eslmag.com
ELT Journal at http://eltj.oxfordjournals.org/
Readers Theater
With the nation-wide focus on teaching children to read along
with the development of the Common Core State Standards, publishers
are seeking to provide resources such as readers theater plays for
educators to use. Readers theater plays can be read aloud while
students sit in their seats and don’t require a stage, costumes, or
a director. Publishers such as Libraries Unlimited and Lerner are
often on the lookout for adding more of these book titles to their
product line.
Children’s Magazines
Many children’s magazines feature some type of beginning reader
story. From rebuses to repetitive stories to readers theater, there
are a variety of formats you can submit to magazines in order to
start gaining experience writing for and building published credits
in the beginning readers market.
When I first started writing for the beginning readers and chapter
book market, I didn’t know the first thing about the opportunities
available or the techniques needed to write a manuscript or land a
contract. Yet writing for this market became a solid source of
income over my career. If I can learn how to experience success,
you can, too! Explore the possibilities. Go ahead and give this
market a try.
with the problem you’re writing about. Use simple language and a
supportive tone. Mental health professionals buy our books for the
same reason laypeople do—because our books are clear, simple, and
complete. Professionals report that they prefer our step-by-step
