=====
HOW MUCH OF MY NOVEL SHOULD I POST ONLINE TO ATTRACT PEOPLE?
This is a hard question to answer because it isn't black and white.
There are mixed messages on giving away your novel. I've listened to
agents speak about "discovering" good writers via serial releases
of a novel. What they don't clarify when they say it can be done is
this: They're only interested when the public gets lit up, afire
with the material so that the blog explodes with interest and starts
trend setting.
If you only have twenty people reading your blog, waiting for the
next chapter, you haven't achieved what an agent seeks. Good means
you are gathering several thousand followers because of how
remarkably your work teases them to return for more.
People don't just come to you because you posted your story
somewhere. You have to work the system and coax people to come to
you. That means lots of social media, maybe even a newsletter. You
have to act as if the book has been published and you are seeking
readers to buy. This is always such a long shot unless you have a
platform already or you're pretty darn savvy and willing to work
relentlessly to snare readers.
What a Catch 22, right? You need to be published to sell well, so
what's a writer to do if not post the book online to build a
following?
The problem here is that you take a chance. When you approach an
agent about this book, and it's been marketed online via your website
or blog, or even self-published in eBook form, that agent will ask
how many people read/bought your book.
If you gathered 450 readers and a dozen reviews, you may be telling
an agent you can't sell the book OR the book isn't marketable enough.
You take a risk here. For every one person that does well using
this tactic to make a name for himself, there are a thousand who
crashed and burned.
I tend to suggest to new novelists to seek a mid-size publisher
that is willing to go the long-haul with you (the long tail
business approach - look it up). Mid-size and smaller presses want
authors for a long time, for multiple books, and they work and
cooperate with you as you build your platform through branding,
social media, deals with Amazon, etc. That is the route I'm taking.
You'd think I'd have a big platform, but my editors didn't have a
clue what FundsforWriters was, and treated me like a newbie. So I've
been in the process for the past year of showing them how hard I can
market.
And remember this. If people already read the book for free, why
would they buy it later when it's published? They're waiting for
book two.
I'd stick to the straight and narrow. Post other writing to build
a following, but not the book you're trying to sell.

WORDS OF SUCCESS
"It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn't lie
in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal
to reach. It isn't a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled,
but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be
unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no
ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars,
but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not
failure, but low aim is a sin."

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Hope,
I just wanted to thank you for advertising our short story
competition (Bethlehem Writers Roundtable Short Story Award)
in Funds for Writers twice, once with its original deadline,
and later with our extended deadline. We appreciate this support.
On a personal note, I am a subscriber to TOTAL Funds for Writers
and value it as an important tool for researching the financial
opportunities in writing. I consider myself a contest hound, but
without your newsletter I never would have discovered the UK short
story contest I won that subsequently paid me over $1,100. Essentially,
TOTAL Funds for Writers has paid for itself for the next 75 years or
so. When it comes time to renew each year, the decision is always
an easy one.
All best,
Paul Weidknecht
Funding Your First Novel Using Kickstarter
By Shawndra Russell
In November 2011, I participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing
Month) for the first time. Ten months later, Couple Friends was
published thanks to my successful Kickstarter campaign in May 2012.
I was able to raise $4,000 because 71 wonderful people believed in
me and my book enough to want this dream to come true.
What a great feeling.
I was shocked by some of the people that donated to my campaign.
Some I hadn’t spoken to (beyond Facebook) since high school or
college. Others were strangers, typically friends of friends. A
few of my freelance writing and social media clients even donated
to my Kickstarter! This platform made it possible to reach out to
people that otherwise would not have known I was writing a book.
Plus, it eliminated the awkwardness that can come with fundraising
because it became about more than just the money.
Those dollars enabled me to hire a professional editor, book cover
designer, and use a consultant to help me properly convert and
upload my Word document so it could become a real, live book
available for purchase. Without Kickstarter, I wouldn’t have a
book published yet.
However, the love and support of my backers meant more to me than
the dollar amounts they gave. Whenever I doubted myself or became
really frustrated doing what I thought was the last edit before the
absolute final edit, I knew that I had 71 people in my corner. They
took time out of their busy lives and reached into their hearts and
wallets to help me achieve my goals. If that doesn’t put faith in
you about humanity, I don’t know what will. And they were counting
on me; I couldn’t just stop when things got hard. I was able to push
through some tough times because I knew my backers believed in me.
Another wonderful part of using Kickstarter to fund my novel was
that when it was finished and available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble,
and Smashwords, I had 71 people that were eager to read it. I had a
built-in audience that was willing to help me by leaving reviews,
telling their friends, and sharing my book news on Facebook and
Twitter. My Kickstarter backers have become my street team, and
they continue to help spread the word and support me today.
Using a site like Kickstarter forces you to start marketing yourself
and your book before the book is published, which is what we should
all do anyway. You have to put yourself out there in the form of
emails, social media updates, creating a Facebook event, and posting
updates about your project directly through Kickstarter, which blasts
out to your backers and can be made public on the Kickstarter website.
I know that there is even more I could have done, but thankfully, I
was fully funded in my final hour due to several generous souls.
I will always be glad that I took my publishing dreams into my own
hands and utilized Kickstarter to make my first novel a reality. And
although I will not use Kickstarter to publish my second novel—Keepsakes,
currently in the editing stage—because I feel like it’s up to me from
here on out, I feel truly blessed that these crowdfunding platforms
are available to authors that don’t want to wait for agents to offer
representation or traditional publishing houses to say yes.
Here’s a list of ten crowdfunding options to get you started, and
please contact me if you have any questions. Good luck!
