EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JUST BE
Across the web, and within the ranks of my readers, I sense the
angst that comes with trying to be a writer.
We think that mastering a "quick" list on Amazon, blogging around
the clock, and attending conferences are what make us writers
because every blog and newsletter tells us we should do these
things. Sure, there are many facets to the writing career, all
of which help to a certain degree, but a point of no return on
investment exists with all of them.
Therein lies another rub. How much do we blog? How much do we
socially network? How many words a day? How many rejections
means the story isn't good? We try to measure, groping for some
line in the sand that tells us when we've done enough . . . or
gone too far.
There comes a time when you just need to be.
I'm as responsible as any person, and diligence isn't foreign to
my routine. But I have my moments, too.
Today I have to complete a newsletter. You folks are my weekly
deadline. Some weeks I get in the newsletter mode and create
more than one, exuding news, editorials and markets, unloading
wonderful information with little effort. One, I'm in the zone.
Two, it feels good to get ahead. I won't write my mysteries on
those days.
Yesterday, however, I didn't want to touch a newsletter, and
I likely won't tomorrow after today's binge. I may work on
websites, feeling all creative, loving the visual. Or I'll
blog, writing five entries because my motivational dial is
cranked up high and the words spill easily.
Then there are the days I love the best . . . when I just want
to write my stories. I may write no more than 500 words, and
take the time to massage them to perfection. Or I'll craft
two chapters, running across the keyboard as the characters
chase their bad guys, and their personal problems.
I miss those days. They don't happen as often as they used to.
They are why I started writing. I retired from the government
to write, to have days like that. Maybe it's time to grab more
of them, to return to what lit the fire in the first place.
Be a writer. Know what makes for a well-rounded schedule and
what you need to do responsibly to earn a living. Be bold enough
to make adjustments.
Other days, however, just let yourself be.
SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope-
I wanted to thank you for publishing Funds for Writers. My fiancee
turned me on to your valuable e-newsletter, which I read diligently
each week. I even enter a few contests with essays based on the memoir
I am writing about the cancer journey my family was on from 2006,
when my late wife was first diagnosed with breast cancer towards the
end of her pregnancy, until 2010, when she died.
Funds for Writers is just an amazing resource for writers of all
levels. And I so appreciate all the time and effort you put into
it. Funds for Writers has helped me focus on just writing more.
With two kids, 14 and 6, and a full-time job running a department
at a local retirement community, I am very busy. And my writing
suffers. But when I get Funds for Writers, I do focus either on a
contest or being more aware of carving time out to write.
And it has paid off. I found out last night that I won second
place for my essay, Shine The Light, in Black Penny Press' writing
contest. The award comes with $250 and a certificate. It feels very
good to be validated for my writing, and I owe a great deal of thanks
to you.
Thank you,
Steven Friedman

Unusual Writing Jobs
by Dianna L. Gunn
You're here because you want to make money from your writing. You've
tried everything from writing filler articles for magazines to writing
full-length features on every topic under the sun. You've created a
blog and put AdSense on it. You're even trying to reach potential
clients through social media.
Well, I'm here to tell you that you haven't tried everything. Thousands
of jobs, all created and available on the world wide web, require
people who can write. They aren't always called 'writing jobs' because
the end goal isn't a beautiful piece of writing, but they require
writers because the process involves writing.
Today I'd like to mention three kinds of jobs which will use your
skills as a writer, allow you to continue working flexibly from home,
and which you've probably overlooked.
1. Social Media Jobs—businesses all over the world are using Twitter
and Facebook to connect with their clients. Frankly, most would rather
have someone else do it. They'll even give you tips—what other sites
in their niche to share content from, what their strategy has been so
far, what hashtags you'll want to use. All you have to do is stay up
to date with what the company's doing and keep Twitter and Facebook
up to date with them.
Right now I get paid weekly for logging into someone else's Twitter
and Facebook right after I log into mine, posting a couple updates and
occasionally asking questions to their following. It takes twenty
minutes out of my day and I get paid well to do it.
So how do you find a social media job? Well, I found mine on
Craigslist, and I've seen several on Kijiji. Social media jobs are
usually posted in the part-time section rather than the writing
section, but it's really about writing: how can you use your words to
connect businesses to their clients?
2. Website Bios for Artists—I just finished working on the first
website biography I've ever done. A four-hundred word biography for a
musician's website paid $50—and should pay more depending on the
client's success level. You might think that people—especially
artists—create their own bios and do the writing for their own
websites. That's often not true. Most artists don't like talking about
themselves. They'd rather have someone like you collect the facts and
make them sparkle.
So how do you get a job writing an artist's bio? I found mine on
Craigslist, but the great thing about artists is they're everywhere.
In fact, you probably know a few. The next time one of your artist
friends is putting together a website, make sure to let them know that
your services include website bios.
3. Blog Jobs—this is perhaps the most obvious on the list. It actually
looks like a writing job.
I'm sure you've been told to create a blog as a showcase for your work
and monetizing it, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking
about getting paid to write posts on someone else's blog to help them
build their business. These jobs are consistent and the ones that pay
well pay really well.
You can get blogging jobs on Craigslist or blogging job boards like
BloggingPro (http://bloggingpro.com). Some blogs, like Make a Living
Writing (http://makealivingwriting.com), even pay for guest posts.
The internet presents us with limitless opportunity. You can get paid
to write scripts for YouTube videos, to write advertising copy, to
recommend services and products you love anyway. The internet will
always provide us with new ways to make money—you just have to find
them.
