September has me enjoying home, writing novels, and returning
to the garden. I've been putting in winter crops of cabbage,
lettuce, broccoli and spinach (another reason I love living
in South Carolina - fall gardening). But these are some of my
peppers. We love peppers, and these babies are the prettiest
habaneros you've ever seen. We grew them alongside banana
peppers, and now we have some of the hottest banana peppers
you ever tasted, too. (Excuse the sweaty look! It's still hot here!)

ONE CONFERENCE CAN BE ALL THE CATALYST YOU NEED

New writers can fear a conference. Seasoned writers may think
they don't need conferences anymore. But I would like to argue
that every writer should dare to attend one conference per year.

It doesn't have to be a huge, 1,000-attendee extravaganza, but
try to make it more than a Christmas party for your writer's group.
You want to make yourself attend a conference where:

1) You meet new authors.
2) You hear new presenters.
3) You have the ability to receive a critique.
4) You have chat time with other writers.

I've been to many conferences. Some are better than others,
but keep in mind I'm viewing it from the standpoint of a
presenter. I'd love to attend a function where I wander
around meeting others who are lost like me, or seeking
answers to writing problems. I want to sit at the same table
as someone who's at my level of writing and publishing. And
I want to be accessible to teachers willing to explain an
issue to me, or tell me if I'm on the right track.

We develop a hunger for our kind. That not only means writers
in general, but also writers who:

1) write our genre
2) write part-time or full-time like us
3) started later in life
4) just left college and don't know where to turn
5) self-published instead of traditionally published
6) remain stubborn for a traditional contract
7) like agents
8) don't like agents
9) prefer ebooks
10) won grants and contests
11) have great blogs
12) make social networking work
13) place their books into bookstores
14) attend retreats and know how to get their way paid

I'm sure you can add to the list, but what we want is to
exchange thoughts with others who have our same doubts . . .
while seeking similar dreams.

In other words, they get you . . . and you get them.

You know how rare those people are in your real world.
Conferences rejuvenate you, but they also help you deduce
whether you're on the right track. They open doors.

1) A published writer meets another published writer and
learns more about selling foreign or film rights.
2) A struggling writer meets one more experience who has a
fantastic blog and offers an opportunity to guest post.
3) You analyze the way author tables are decorated and develop
some great ideas for a new banner.
4) You study business cards and bookmarks handed out and see
why yours aren't cutting the mustard.
5) You hear about new magazines seeking freelancers and decide
to pitch a few.
6) You become friends with a bookstore owner who offers to
stock your book in his store after the conference, maybe
offer you a signing event.
7) You offer to volunteer next year at the conference in
exchange for your conference fees being paid.

The opportunities are endless! Just go to a conference, and
choose to learn and network. You will walk away with enough
ideas to keep your muse pumped for months to come.

THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....

As a male, I tend to find thrillers written around male protagonists
to be more my speed, but C. Hope Clark's novel pushes enough right
buttons to cross the gender gap. Carolina Slade works for the
government and does the right thing by reporting a bribery attempt
only to find herself mired in an ever-deepening mess. Miss Clark
constantly raises the stakes as her heroine gets pushed deeper into
confusion and betrayal while not knowing who is on her side.
Ultimately her life, and the lives of her children are on the line
as a "good ole boy" farmer drives Slade to the brink. The characters
are well developed and credible, with a double-crossing shock or
two along the way in an all-too-credible plot.

My book is a young adult, lesbian romance. Obviously, it was

Thankfully, I didn't have to. Yes, it is a unusual genre but

lesbians, gays and transsexuals face as teenagers, and even
as adults.

How Free Federal Government Websites Help Your Writing

The federal government sponsors top-notch websites free for
the searching. But why search the federal government websites
instead of just googling your question? The answer lies in
quality. These websites contain trusted sources and the top
experts in their fields. Of course, nonfiction writers should
be acquainted with them, but they can also aid the fiction writer
who has a question/problem.

Once you choose a website, the searching process is guided so
you don’t have to be a subject expert yourself to use them. A
sampling of these free subject databases and examples appears
below.

Multidisciplinary: http://usa.gov is a primary source for
access to U.S. government documents. It is a portal which
searches all agency documents at once in a unified way.

As an example of how a fiction writer would use usa.gov, maybe
Hope Clark’s Carolina Slade would need to know about the disease
that killed Jessie Rawlings’ hogs. Just search “domesticated hogs
diseases South Carolina” for a possible answer.

As an added bonus, the portal lists U.S. government grants. Just
enter “grants writers” and your state name.

in crime, victim assistance, and public safety including

containing more than 1 million records of journal articles,
research, reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference
papers, books, and more and more full text. It covers preschool
through higher education. An example of its use might be to find
the relationship of an autistic child with his classmates for a
character study.

MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's website for
patients and their families and friends. It brings the layperson
information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues.
MedlinePlus offers reliable, up-to-date health information. It
helps you learn about the latest treatments, look up information
on a drug or supplement, find out the meanings of words, or view
medical videos or illustrations. You can also get links to the
latest medical research on your topic or find out about clinical
trials on a disease or condition.

This source is especially good for drug side effects and overdose
information, again for those murder mysteries. Find the lethal
dose of a drug for a fictitious poisoning. It contains medical
encyclopedias for diseases your characters may suffer.

million records for biomedical literature (including nursing and
allied health) from medical and life science journals, and online
books. Records may include links to full-text content. This is the
site you want for locating medical experts’ names and institutions
for your nonfiction articles. See the publishing output of an
author—that which makes him or her an expert.

Avail yourself of the federal government’s free databases for
both your fiction and nonfiction information needs.

the University of Nebraska Press and Amalion Press in Senegal.
The Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets will only accept
first book submissions from African writers who have not
published a book-length poetry collection. This includes self-
published books if they were sold online, in stores, or at
readings. Writers who have edited and published an anthology
or a similar collection of other writers’ work remain eligible.
An African writer is taken to mean someone who was born in
Africa, who is a national or resident of an African country,
or whose parents are African. Only poetry written in English is
eligible. Translated poetry is accepted but a percentage of the
prize will be awarded to the translator. Manuscripts are accepted
annually between September 15 and November 15.

founded in 1996 and is open to all professional artists. Writers,
composers and all visual and performing artists are invited to
interpret this wind-swept environment through their work. The
program provides time for artists to get away from everyday
responsibilities to focus on their surroundings and their medium.
Minimum of four weeks and up to six weeks. Also offers a
reimbursement for expenses up to $300. Residencies are available
between March 15 and May 15 or September 15 through November 15
of each year. Deadlines June 15 and December 15.

The Artist-in-Residence Program at Acadia National Park offers
professional writers, composers, and all visual and performing
artists the opportunity to pursue their particular art form while
surrounded by the inspiring landscape of the park. In the spring
and fall, the park provides housing to participants for two-week
to four-week periods. No additional stipend is available. In
return, participating artists are asked to donate to the park
collection a piece of work representative of their style and
their stay. Applications for the program are accepted beginning
October 1 and must be received by January 7 for consideration for
the following season. Notification will be made by late March.
There is a $25 non-refundable application fee for applying to
the residency.

The application period for the 2013 Artsmith Artist Residency
is open until October 1, 2012. Each year Artsmith’s Peer Review
Panel selects up to five Artist Residency Fellows to be our
guests for a one-week interdisciplinary residency for artists,
scholars, and writers to have focused time to create new works.
The 2013 residency will take place February 1-8 at the Kangaroo
House Bed & Breakfast on Orcas Island in Washington State's San
Juan Islands. As guests of Artsmith and Kangaroo House, Fellows
enjoy private rooms and baths, continental breakfast, and access
to the inn's amenities, including wireless internet connectivity
and garden hot tub. Fellows provide their own travel, other
meals, and incidentals. $35 application fee.
