I'm "Octobering" outside a lot more these days. Deer, birds, ducks,
geese galore, enjoying the weather. Have one crippled Canadian
goose with a broken wing that looks like he'll be with us throughout
the winter minus his buddies. The dove are fat and happy, and squirrels
are frantic stealing pecans off the trees. Makes we want to shut down
the computer and enjoy the back porch with a cup of hot chocolate,
spiked, of course.

=====
ARE YOU CONFLICTED?
There are two large pools of writers out there, from what I see.
Maybe my impression is a bit simplistic, but this revelation
is one of the clearest lines in the sand I see in our profession.
1) Those who run from conflict.
2) Those who brace it too tightly, wrapping their fingers around
its neck, wanting to throttle it for existing.
Both are wrong.
A small group exists in between, however, and they are usually
the ones happiest in their work.
When we are rejected; when we climb uphill thinking how unfair
it is; when we receive edits only to take issue with the
suggestions for changing our words, we are fighting change.
We are fighting growth. We are fighting the means to become
better writers.
I've been in critique groups where the writer submitted their
work, then tried to explain their motives when the reviewers
took issue with points of view, verbs, tags, adverbs, whatever.
I've heard such writers use terms like creative license
and artistic style, even chastising others for not getting
their voice. I've seen those writers accuse reviewers of selling
themselves out to commercialism and what's popular instead of
being loyal to art.
And I've witnessed flaming exchanges, as each writers argues
who was right, when in fact, both should walk away.
Me? When I see heat rising from a writer about rejection,
critiques, or editorial opinion, I walk away. I don't want
to hear it. Art is so subjective. There isn't a right or wrong
answer. I don't want to fight. I'm not going to try to force
feed my side to you.
But . . . and you knew I had a but...
When something does not sell, when work cannot find a publisher,
agent or even readers, there's something wrong.
There's nothing noble about fighting for work that can't find
a home. Yes, I'm the poster child for finding an agent, submitting
to 72 before I landed one. However, for each dozen rejections
I did a rewrite. I wasn't so stubborn that I thought my writing
was rejected due to stupidity or ignorance. Those people have
been in the business far longer than I have, so obviously my
work needed . . . more work.
Now, you don't want to edit every time you are rejected, because
rejections are as subjective as the writing involved. But when
the rejections amass, you have to face the mirror and realize
the person needing to make amends is you.
Writing is a never-ending editing process. It's never perfect.
If you think it is, you're wrong. So, when it's consistently
rejected or not read, then change it. Each new word, each changed
phrase, each deleted scene and added secondary character, makes
for stronger story-telling, not only in the piece before you, but
in all those that come after.
Don't be afraid to edit too much. Don't fear moving your words
around one more time. Even if you do it and don't like it, you
can always move them back . . . but I bet you don't.
Enjoy editing. It's like vitamins for your writing muscle.

For When You Lose a Writing Gig
By Carol J. Alexander
When your husband is a commission-only salesman, and you have
four kids living at home, a freelance writer needs a couple
gigs she can depend on. That is why I write for blogs. The
income from two sites buys the groceries and funds date nights
with hubby. This month I lost one of those jobs. The owners said
the site was “hit by Google's algorithm change” and they could
no longer afford to keep the staff writing. I learned a few things
from the experience that I’d like to share with you.
Always have a back-up plan
I wanted to despair about losing my blogging job—for about an
hour. Then I remembered another project I struggled to make
time for. Boy was I relieved to know I already had a plan in
place. The next time slot dedicated to write posts for that
blog, I pulled out the shelved project and got to work. If you
don’t have a shelved project, at least have a file of writers’
guidelines and start sending out those queries. If blogging’s
your thing, Carol Tice of MakeALivingWriting.com has a list of
blogs that pay at least $50 per post.
Start with a contract
Last year, the owner of another blog I write for decided to
feature a special project for an entire month. He notified each
of his writers the week before Christmas that he didn’t need any
posts for January. Remember, that was my grocery money he just
cut for his pet project. That left me scrambling to make up for
it. But if I had had a contract in the first place, this may
not have happened. He would have had to integrate his project
in with the regular posts, or given me more than 2 weeks’ notice.
Would this have protected me with the blog that just didn’t have
the money anymore? Maybe, maybe not. If someone is going under,
they are going under. “A contract is kind of like insurance,”
said Kelly James-Enger, freelancing expert and author of Writer
for Hire, 101 Secrets to Freelance Success, in a recent interview.
“But sometimes you have a claim that isn’t covered under your
insurance.” However, she went on to explain that if a blog owner
employs two writers, one with a contract and one without, he may
choose to let go of the non-contracted freelancer and keep the
other until the terms of the contract are met. What kind of terms?
A simple blogging contract should include the amount of work
(number of posts, number of words per post, and duration),
whether the writer provides photos, terms of payment, and whether
the work is by-lined.
Look at what you’re walking away with.
I wrote for the blog that let me go once a week for almost two years.
That’s a lot of material that I own rights to. I could tweak those
posts for another market and resell. I could sell them to a print
publication for reprint rights. Since they all focus on one topic,
I could compile them into an e-book. Not just that, two years of a
weekly column will look pretty good on my resume. From this job,
I’m not walking away empty handed.
We know when we start in this business that it has its ups and
downs. Don’t let the downs keep you down, though. Just keep writing.
