The cove is pretty these days with autumn almost upon us.
In another week or two, those leaves will be yellow, red and
orange! My favorite time of year--October especially with
new smells, recipes, colors, the fair, football, just heaven.

YOU CANNOT FORCE "LIKE"

I wrote a blog post recently about how readers can help authors
on Amazon. You are reading my blog, right?

http://chopeclark.com/2012/09/when-you-go-to-amazon-dont-just-buy-a-book/

One of the suggestions involved clicking the little orange and white
thumbs-up hand so that it turns gray, liking the book page, or the
author page. It's a simple gesture to tell the author you've been
there and appreciate what they are doing. Those types of likes are
easy and have become more etiquette that critical in nature.

Some likes, however, aren't so clean and simple. For example,
people liking your book, blog, articles, or even your Facebook
notes. Someone out there is going to disagree about whether your
are talented. While many of my readers loved to hate Alan, a
character in Lowcountry Bribe, one painted him as too shallow and
one-dimensional. So guess what I agonized over for a day or two?

Then there's the other side of the coin, when you don't like
others' work. I belong to two writers' groups. Eventually, a
member introduces a piece I just cannot connect with. Maybe it's
the genre, the plot, even the dialogue, but it does not click.
Sometimes the clash is such that I really don't want to critique
it, knowing I'll be frustrated having to trudge through it and
come out on the other end not having enjoyed the trip.

For instance, someone Facebook messaged me a couple weeks ago,
proud about his book release. I congratulated him. He then asked,
"Will you buy it?" I glanced at the title, then the Amazon page.
It was a how-to improve your life message. I replied that I was
swamped with books to read at present with 30 on my nightstand
and who-knows-how-many on my Kindle. He replied, "Will you read
it in a few weeks?" I finally replied, "Sorry. I'm in a good place
with my life, so I don't need self-help material." It just wasn't
something I wanted to read.

Then there's the bestseller list that everyone oohs and aahs over.
I don't like many of them. As blasphemous as it may sound, I do
not like to read Barbara Kingsolver. I do not think she'll lose
sleep over that, either. My money's on the probability that she
doesn't like my work either. Sometimes readers will buy a
bestseller thinking it's properly vetted and is a one-size-fits-all
good read. Bestsellers are no different than the other books in
the world when it comes to fans and non-fans. Nobody can write
for all readers. Granted, that celebrity frenzy and strong
word-of-mouth drive can sell a lot of books.

And finally, you do not have to like all the classics. I love
mysteries. I'll read Poe and Doyle. But when I finally find the
time to sit down with a book, to sip tea and relax at the end
of my day, I want a story that carries me away. War and Peace
ain't gonna do it for me.

Do not be afraid to dislike writing. At the same time, do not
take it personally when someone dislikes yours. Avoid calling
them names and wishing ill-harm to their families. We can't read
or like all books. What a boring world that would be . . .
without diversity . . . without the effort of discovery . . .
without the free rein to seek and find the authors that really
make us happy to jump into a story.

YOU SAID IT!!!

THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....

Loved this book. I was quickly immersed in the quirky world of the
South Carolina Lowcountry. The protagonist is as real as your best
friend-- a strong and complex woman navigating in a traditionally
male territory. Of course, I stayed up too late turning the pages....

How Free Federal Government Websites Help Your Writing
By Donna R. Dolan

The federal government sponsors top-notch websites free for
the searching. But why search the federal government websites
instead of just googling your question? The answer lies in
quality. These websites contain trusted sources and the top
experts in their fields. Of course, non-fiction writers should
be acquainted with them, but they can also aid the fiction writer
who has a question/problem.

Once you choose a website, the searching process is guided so
you don’t have to be a subject expert yourself to use them. A
sampling of these free subject databases and examples appears
below.

Multidisciplinary: http://usa.gov
A primary source for access to U.S. government documents. It
is a “portal” which searches all agency documents at once in a
unified way. As an example of how a fiction writer would use
usa.gov, maybe Hope Clark’s Carolina Slade would need to know
about the disease that killed Jessie Rawlings’ hogs. Just search
“domesticated hogs diseases South Carolina” for a possible answer.

As an added bonus, the portal lists U.S. government grants. Just
enter “grants writers” and your state name.

Criminal Justice: National Criminal Justice Reference Service
https://www.ncjrs.gov/app/abstractdb/abstractdbsearch.aspx
NCJRS services and resources are available to anyone interested
in crime, victim assistance, and public safety including policymakers,
practitioners, researchers, educators, community leaders, and the
general public.

Authors of murder mysteries can find source material here, for
example, the murder rate in Detroit or any major city.

Education: ERIC
http://www.eric.ed.gov/
ERIC is the world’s largest collection of education literature,
containing more than 1 million records of journal articles,
research, reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference
papers, books, and more and more full text. It covers preschool
through higher education.

An example of its use might be to find the relationship of an
autistic child with his classmates for a character study.

Medicine: There are two excellent medical databases

MedlinePlus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/)
and
PUBMED (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/).

MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's website for
patients and their families and friends. It brings the layperson
information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues.
MedlinePlus offers reliable, up-to-date health information. It
helps you learn about the latest treatments, look up information
on a drug or supplement, find out the meanings of words, or view
medical videos or illustrations. You can also get links to the
latest medical research on your topic or find out about clinical
trials on a disease or condition.

This source is especially good for drug side effects and overdose
information, again for those murder mysteries. Find the lethal
dose of a drug for a fictitious poisoning. It contains medical
encyclopedias for diseases your characters may suffer.

More technical than MedlinePlus, PubMed comprises more than 21
million records for biomedical literature (including nursing
and allied health) from medical and life science journals, and
online books. Records may include links to full-text content.

This is the site you want for locating medical experts’ names and
institutions for your non-fiction articles. See the publishing
output of an author—that which makes him or her an expert.

Avail yourself of the federal government’s free databases for
both your fiction and nonfiction information needs.
