Message from the Editor

As you are reading this (well, hopefully you read the newsletter within a day or two after it's sent), I am presenting at the Mississippi Writers Guild Conference in Meridian at the MAX, also known as the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience. Nice name for a venue, don't you think?

My first conference of the year. While my writing hasn't slowed, my appearances have for several reasons:

1) dealing with my parents with dementia,
2) craving more time to write,
3) appearances aren't as lucrative as in the past.

We get most of our entertainment and education online these days. I get that. It's cheaper and oh so convenient. I'm not the only one who reaches for a smartphone to check out a detail or answer a question. But that's okay. Now I have no excuse not to write more, and faster.

However, there are still some things you have to do in person, and that's a concert. Recently attended an outdoor Chicago / REO Speedwagon concert with hubby, son and his new girlfriend. That first sip of beer totally threw me back to my college dorm days when Chicago blared horns on speakers up and down the hall.

Son and me enjoying the music! Enjoy your summer, y'all.

From Amazon reviewers:

I always like the mystery and crime story behind Slade but with this one, the interpersonal relationships just shine and demand attention that they deserve and humanize the characters on a whole new level. I don't just want another crime story, I now want more of the characters.

Strong, well rounded characters are a hallmark of Hope Clark’s books, and this one is no exception.

- - -

A must-have for fans of high voltage action, mystery and just the right amount of romantic tension. Hope this series continues.

Wow, wow, wow. Stellar addition to the Carolina Slade series! Once again the author exceeds herself in writing this 4th book of the series.

EDitor’s THOUGHTS

MAKE IT ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

I know a couple of writers, who shall remain nameless, who are only seen on social media when they post their book cover and say in various and assorted ways, "Buy this book." They are traditionally published, which amazes me, because the whole "Buy my book" mantra began with self-publishing. We don't learn much about the story, don't get a hint of flavor about the voice, and barely learn the genre.

In the old days, which weren't too long ago, selling books was purely about the experience of the tale. It was about drawing in readers by baiting them with intriguing copy or ads. Writing press releases and sending out post cards that snared readers with snippets.

When a book leads with price, I usually go the other way, because the author/publisher thinks that's what attracts me. That's who they think I am. . . a person after a deal. While some people refuse to pay more than 99 cents for a book, I prefer to hear a back cover blurb about the tale. I just spent $13 for an ebook for my book club, but the author had credentials, the book cover copy captured me, and the blurb grabbed my attention. The price told me that the market respects this author, publisher, and book. I wanted to respect the author, too.

Sell me on a good time. Sell me on how engrossed I will be in the character, the story, the twist. Sell me on location, historic meaning, or genre. Give me a paragraph from the book so I can sample the voice of the author.

Don't sell me on the deal. . . sell me on talent and entertainment. And once you've drawn me in and have me ready to hit the BUY button, only then tell me how much it costs.

WORDS OF SUCCESS

“At the time I begin writing a novel, the last thing I want to do is follow a plot outline. To know too much at the start takes the pleasure out of discovering what the book is about.”

SUccess Story

Dear Hope,

I found literary agent, Jeanie Loiacono, through your wonderful FundsforWriters newsletter. I had many Jewish picture books published by Jewish publishing companies at the time, but I had also written manuscripts for children's books and for a memoir that had universal messages. Jeanie helped me find publishers for these manuscripts and now my spiritual books are being enjoyed by a much wider audience.

Your newsletters have given me lots of encouragement through the years. Thank you for sharing your love of writing, Hope.

Warmly,
Bracha Goetz

Negotiating for Writers

by Pascale Duguay

Do you keep track of how long it takes you to finish each writing project? Doing so will not only show you how much you earn per hour but will provide other great side benefits as well.

For most of my freelancing career, I've resisted tracking my writing time. I worried that it would affect the quality of my writing and, perhaps more importantly, that I'd find out I would be better off flipping burgers. Thankfully, I discovered otherwise. Being aware that the clock is ticking, forces me to jump straight into the story instead of trying to find the perfect opening. It's also helping me stay focused on the writing, which means that I get more writing done in a shorter period of time. I'm also motivated to stay on track so I can stay within a certain income range. When I start slowing down, I know it's time to stop for a break. There's no point in forcing myself to keep going because that's when the quality takes a dramatic nosedive.

What surprised me the most was that this process has led me to look at time differently. Since I have two other careers, my writing sessions are often limited. In the past I'd look at the clock and think, "What's the point. I only have half an hour." I felt it was barely long enough to get warmed up. Now I see those same thirty minutes and ask myself a critical question: "What part of my story can I work on?" In this way, I'm able to fix a weak beginning, or an awkward ending, and oftentimes both. Additionally, I'm better at not letting interruptions stop me, especially when I'm in the flow. A favorite response of mine now is: "Can it wait? I just need a few more minutes."

Tracking your writing time will also help you determine how long you might need to finish a project requested by a client or whether it's worth taking on in the first place. For example, I've discovered that it takes me about five hours to write a 1,000-word short story for children's magazines. This means that for a $100 story I'm making $20 per hour. When I had an idea for a magazine that paid only $50 per story, I knew I'd be working for less than minimum wage. I still wrote the story, but I did two things to help boost that amount: 1) I wrote with more focus, shaving 30 minutes off my usual time, and 2) I asked for more money and received $75. This meant that my hourly rate had increased from $10 to $16.67.

Keeping track of your writing time is as simple as using a timer or jotting down the time when you start and end each writing session. Then transfer your total into a four-column spreadsheet with headings for: Title, Writing Time, Date, and Notes (optional). Once your story is completed, add your daily totals and voilà! When you sell your story, you'll know exactly how much you made per hour.

And how much did I make with this article? I wrote in short bursts totaling about two hours, thus netting me $25 per hour. Not bad for someone who's never mastered the fine art of burger flipping! Although these numbers might not make me rich overnight, they're a great starting point for helping me set goals that will increase my bottom line down the road while improving my efficiency and productivity.
