Message from the Editor

I've had a hard few weeks personally. Very hard. Hard enough to reduce me to tears and make me ball up in my recliner and binge watch television to get my head into a more fun place. We all wind up there once in a while, and sometimes we have to relinquish ourselves to the emotional moments, replenish our energy, and regroup. The pups have been there for me as has hubby. But one very positive thought I have is that the FundsforWriters herd and a sea of writers are always there. Online friends are pretty phenomenal. Never underestimate them.

Take care of yourselves, and let writing nurture you.

Editor’s THOUGHTS

FINDING LOCAL GRANTS

Everyone wants a grant. Who wouldn't desire free money to aid a goal? The trouble is grants are not common. And they are no longer lucrative. However, a small grant of $500 to $2,500 might be the shot-in-the-arm you need to research your book, design a book tour, or create a public appearance to jumpstart your book's release.

No two grants are alike, and there isn't one place to find grants. If there was, I'd be out of business. Finding grants is like hunting for the right writing market or researching agents. It takes time and diligence to ferret them out.

One place people forget to look is at home. Often, arts councils appear in little towns and counties. They aren't big, but they are passionate, and often they have funds to assist local artists.

Three of the grants listed in this newsletter are geographically specific. One is even limited to writers in Orange County, North Carolina. Many of these councils require a small membership fee, but that membership probably gives you a stronger voice into what the council offers the community. And if they lean to only theatre and crafts, maybe it's time you joined and let them know that the literary arts are important, too. Or you might be pleasantly surprised to find they have small literary grants already. While this one's deadline has expired, little ol' Pitt County, NC has grants of $500 to $1,000. http://www.pittcountyarts.org/artists/grants/regional-artist-project-grants

Then from local, go regional. South Arts has grants for the southeastern United States. http://www.southarts.org/resources/links/ So does the Mid-American Alliance. http://www.arts.texas.gov/jobs-opportunities/regional-touring-grants/ As does Arts Midwest https://www.artsmidwest.org/ and New England Foundation for the Arts http://www.nefa.org/.

If you aren't sure of where to start looking, contact your state arts commission. They know all the local connections in your state as well as the regional ones. And you can go here to find your state arts commission: https://www.arts.gov/partners/state-regional

So don't give up...just start local, and get to know these folks who are trained in where the money is.

http://www.chopeclark.com/

Edisto Island is a paradise where people escape from the mainstream world. Yet for newly sworn-in Edisto Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan, the trouble has just begun . . .

When a rookie officer drowns in a freak crash in the marsh, Callie’s instincts tell her it wasn’t an accident. As suspects and clues mount, Callie’s outlandish mother complicates the investigation, and Callie’s long-time friendship with Officer Mike Seabrook takes a turn toward something new—but is shadowed by the unsolved mystery of his wife’s death. Everyone’s past rises to the surface, entangling with death that cuts to the bone.

"Author C. Hope Clark brings to life the uniqueness that is Edisto, peppering the island with endearing and strong-minded characters that linger in your mind long after the last page is turned." --Karen White, New York Times Bestselling Author, www.karen-white.com

"To date, I believe Echoes of Edisto is C. Hope Clark's best book. I have been wrapped up in her previous books but she hits a personal note in this one that grabbed my heart in a rare way, especially for a mystery book."

Success Story

Hi Hope,

My name is Elva D. Green. I began following your FundsforWriters back in 2014. I was beginning a biography of my father, and I needed help. At first I followed you to check out the contests and writer retreat information. Then I noticed all of the book signings you were doing. Then I started reading the complete newsletter. I found it inspirational as a newbie to writing. In July 2016 my book was published by BearManor Media Publishing. I am having my first book signing in November!! Thanks for being available for folks like me who now call themselves authors.

Sincerely,
Elva D. Green, Author

Creative Writing in the Medical/Mental Health Community

By Joy Jones

That writing workshop you do for students may be valuable as a creative expression session for adults in psychiatric hospitals, court-supervision programs or substance abuse clinics. You know how journal writing can relieve stress or how creating one's own story can be greatly gratifying.

Mental health professionals know this, too and may welcome having your writing skills put to use for their clients. For years, I have offered paid creative writing workshops in healthcare settings. A typical class begins with a warm-up activity to stimulate ideas. Then the writing exercise is assigned and participants write quietly for 15 minutes. Following that, participants discuss their work. Fees paid for workshops can range from $100 to $500 per session.

Make it happen by contacting the clinical director at a facility. Pitch your creative writing class as a more engaging and entertaining way to reinforce some of the therapeutic insights the program teaches. Better than a one-shot class, however, is an ongoing series.  For that, you will probably need to be funded through a grant. That will require you to partner with the facility to be included in a project they have initiated, or do as I have done and seek your own grants once you've found an interested organization.

My entree began with a social worker at a mental hospital asking me to edit the patients' newsletter. That conversation led to the Lens & Pens Creative Expression Project, over two decades of grant-funded groups where patients learned to write and recite poetry plus publish a newsletter.

One colleague landed an arts grant providing creative writing workshops for a rehab program. Part of her proposal was to publish a chapbook of the residents' writings. The facility was then allowed to sell the book as a fundraiser, an arrangement that provided a financial win-win for them both.

Ongoing funds can be paid in several ways: a grant awarded directly to you, an individual contract with a facility, or under the auspices of an organization that receives a grant and pays you from that program. Most of my grants have come through an Individual Artist grant provided by the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, which also funded my colleague's program. Many state or county art commissions award grants directly to individual writers and do not require organizational sponsorship. The application requires submitting a form, writing samples, an artistic resume and a budget. My grant covers my teaching fee, stipends to hire guest artists, publication of several editions of a patient newsletter, a poetry chapbook, and office supplies for 12-16 weekly sessions. Grant awards range from $3,000-$8,000. I have also received funding from the DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH.) Their grant period usually lasts 9-12 months and the awards are around $8,000-$15,000. For the DBH grants, the money was awarded to The Spoken Word, my non-profit arts organization. I also have an individual year-long subcontract to the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency to do workshops with parolees.

Find grants by contacting the arts council and the humanities council in your city or county for announcements of upcoming funding opportunities. I subscribe to Funding Alert, a newsletter listing funders soliciting a wide range of proposal requests. Join this free subscription at: http://opgs.dc.gov/service/funding-alert-information.

Expanding your literary reach into a clinical setting can improve your cash position. Monetary and mental health – now that's a fine prescription for any writer!

FREELANCE MARKETS

AOPA PILOT
https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/publications/writers-guidelines
AOPA Pilot is the nation’s leading general aviation publication. In general, articles for AOPA Pilot should be written in the third person. Four categories pay freelancers: Never Again (lessons learned from flights and incidents), Postcards (destinations), Pilots (personality profiles), Features (everything else).

YOUNG RIDER
http://www.youngrider.com/writers-guidelines.aspx
We don’t use much freelance work, most of it is done in-house by the editor, who also designs the magazine and shoots most of the photographs. We sometimes buy 800-1,000 word “horsey interest” type stories. Stories or events that will interest kids ALL over the country that the editor is not able to personally. We need four to five good color pictures with stories like this. The pictures must be color and tack sharp. The pay is about $200 for those types of stories. We do buy short stories (approximately 800-1,000 words) for about $150. They have to be “realistic” stories and not too sugary sweet. We only use four to five of these a year.

WORKING MOTHER
http://www.workingmother.com/home/working-mother-magazine-writers-guidelines
We do assign features to freelancers. Feature pitches should specifically relate to the working mom, whether geared to her work, family, personal well-being or a mixture of these. Features are also assigned to fit our initiative packages (100 Best Companies, Best Companies for Multicultural Women, NAFE 50 Top Companies for Executive Women and 50 Best Law Firms for Women). We like tightly focused pieces that celebrate working moms while sensibly solving or illuminating a problem unique to our readers and/or their children and family. We assign features at about 1,000 to 2,000 words. Online we do assign short features to freelancers. Again, pitches should be related to the working mom's work, family or lifestyle. We assign at around 500–1,000 words, tip-driven, essay or listicle.

FLASH FICTION ONLINE
http://flashfictiononline.com/main/submission-guidelines/
We publish stories from 500 to 1,000 words in length. They’re very short, but they are still stories. That means the best ones have strong, interesting characters, plots, and (to some extent, at least) settings. We welcome submissions from writers of every race, religion, nationality, gender, and sexual orientation. Pays $60 per story.
