Message from the Editor

That's me in the veggie garden, just replanted with collards and turnips and two more tomatoes. The chicken coop housing the old flock is behind me. It's still humid and dang hot in South Carolina, but I'm headed to Alaska as you read this. I even had an offer to speak at a library up there, but I decided it was time for a real vacation for a change. Can't remember when we did that. Why Alaska? Because my sister-in-law and best buddy realized we had the Northern Lights on both our bucket lists. So off we go. Oh...we're also headed up to the Arctic Circle. Why? Because we thought it would be cool. (LOL - I could NOT resist that.)

Editor’s THOUGHTS

LOOK FOR THESE ITEMS IN YOUR BOOK PUBLISHING CONTRACT

I recently received a Facebook message asking me to tell that person what to watch for in a publishing contract. Of course I could not respond adequately to them for several reasons:

1) It was a FB message. There was no way to cover everything in that tiny a space.
2) I am not an attorney. While I know a lot of what's needed and can identify many red flags, I default to the powers-that-be to get it right.
3) They didn't even have the book finished yet.

So I promised them I'd do an upcoming editorial about the subject, so I could educate more than them as well as add a piece to the FundsforWriters archives of material. (Read past issues at: http://archive.aweber.com/fundsforwriters)

Concerns to look for in your contract are:

1) Rights - Run from Exclusive Rights. Make them get specific about rights. You want to grant Nonexclusive Rights and negotiate specific rights they will use, reserving all other rights not specifically granted for yourself. One example of reserving rights might be for movies, limiting the publisher to only publishing rights.

2) Royalties - Though difficult to acquire, attempt to negotiate your royalty percentage on the cover price, not a net. Sellers like Amazon can require a 50 percent discount, and if you receive royalties based upon net, that means your eight percent royalty will be based on half the price of the book.

3) Marketing - When the contract states you have to market and your publisher does not, renegotiate. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, to use an old saying. Also avoid verbiage that mandates the sales of a certain number of books.

4) Termination - Like a prenup, you need to know how this relationship will be terminated if things don't go well. You want to know what happens when your book goes out of print, ceases to sell, or the company goes under.

Of course there's a slew of other issues with a contract. Take a look at the link below to see a more detailed listing of what to watch for when you decide to sign on the dotted line.

ECHOES OF EDISTO
# 3 in THE EDISTO ISLAND MYSTERY SERIES

http://www.chopeclark.com/

Edisto Island is a paradise where people escape from the mainstream world. Yet for newly sworn-in Edisto Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan, the trouble has just begun . . .

When a rookie officer drowns in a freak crash in the marsh, Callie’s instincts tell her it wasn’t an accident. As suspects and clues mount, Callie’s outlandish mother complicates the investigation, and Callie’s long-time friendship with Officer Mike Seabrook takes a turn toward something new—but is shadowed by the unsolved mystery of his wife’s death. Everyone’s past rises to the surface, entangling with death that cuts to the bone.

"Author C. Hope Clark brings to life the uniqueness that is Edisto, peppering the island with endearing and strong-minded characters that linger in your mind long after the last page is turned." --Karen White, New York Times Bestselling Author, www.karen-white.com

"To date, I believe Echoes of Edisto is C. Hope Clark's best book. I have been wrapped up in her previous books but she hits a personal note in this one that grabbed my heart in a rare way, especially for a mystery book."

Success Story

Hi Hope,

Thanks for your newsletter announcement a couple of months ago concerning Killer Nashville. I attended the conference, and it was packed with information that I hope to put to good use. Also made a point to seek out Rona Simmons who won your FundsforWriters scholarship and get acquainted with her.

My goals in participating were met and I'm highly satisfied by the experience. I wanted to expand my network among other writers and get some tips on encouraging some of the characters I've known to emerge with a story to tell.

When Time is Money: Charging by the Hour

By Alex J Coyne

As a freelancer or copywriter, charging per hour rather than per word (or page) seems daunting – especially with projects that take up several weeks of your time. But, time is money. Here’s how to figure out which payment method is best:

Setting a Rate
Pricing yourself by the hour means considering: (1) how much work you average in an hour’s time, (2) how many hours you work in a week, (3) your expenses, and (4) what others are charging.

Sites like LinkedIn, PeoplePerHour, Freelancer and fellow-freelancer’s websites will help you gauge the market.

Use this Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator from All Indie Writers (http://allindiewriters.com/freelance-hourly-rate-calculator/) to help you calculate your rate. I started small, charging $10 an hour at first, then worked myself up to $25 when I suddenly realized I had more clients and less time. Experience matters. People will pay for it.

Per hour?
Charging per hour can benefit both you and your client. A 10,000-word project at 50 cents per word will run your client $5, 000, but at $20 per hour (assuming you go through 500 words per hour), it would be $400 (20 hours). You might also decide to go with per-hour because the final word count is unsure or you’re working within a time-frame.

I started charging per hour when singer-songwriter Rea le Roux came to me for a press release to announce the start of a new hip-hop dancing group to encourage the local youth. We couldn’t agree on a word count, and the piece had to be translated into Afrikaans. So, I charged per hour, for two hours of work: One hour of interviewing and research, and an hour of writing, translating and editing.

For you, charging per hour could make it easier to calculate (and reach) your goal salary: The more hours you put in, the better you can get paid.

Time: What factors into that measurement?
Time is money, but what is time? Think about what will factor into your per-hour charge beforehand: Time spent writing, editing and proofing are obvious, but what about your travel time and any additional research?

Account for weekends and off days: How many hours aren’t you working? Incorporate these when issuing quotes, progress reports and statements. You might also need more time, say, if you or your client ends up in the hospital, or if your laptop crashes. Both have happened to me.

Run a timer when actively working to include researching, writing and translating. Keep a list of what you did, when you did it, and how much time you put into it. Send this break-down to your client to show them what they are paying for.

Bathroom breaks, trips to the store, and feeding the cats aren’t deductible.

Be willing to negotiate, but decide beforehand how much room for negotiation you will allow, as you would negotiating for a car. You don’t want to be out-negotiated. In other words, know your budget.

What’s your type?
When you’re typing against the clock, speed matters. Learning to type quicker will save you time, too. Use Wapsilon.com to test and improve your typing speed;  Typingstudy.com  and  Typingclub.com are great places to learn touch-typing, which can make you work faster, more effectively, giving you time for more clients.
