EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
_______________________________________________________________________
NOT SETTLING FOR NO
I saw this Steve Jobs quote recently and it resonated with me. When you read it, you'll see how he became the phenomenal man he did.
"For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something." ~Steve Jobs
The man rose in the morning and acted, instead of reacted. Children are, for the most part, taught to react. How to behave if this happens, or that happens. It's the rare family that teaches its progeny to think about proactivity. Those are the people who create companies, write bestsellers, and invent the world.
I ran into a gentleman at an event recently who marveled at all my books on the table. He recognized that it took sweat, time, research and effort. He congratulated me. I told him that anyone in the room could do this. It just meant carving out your life to make it happen. Showing up to work every day. Writing and marketing daily. Pitching until somebody finally says yes. Improving the quality of writing, blogging or self-promotion until you got it right. It's just doing, failing,
and doing again, repeating until something works.
Super simple concept that is time-tested to be true.
He smiled, shook his head, and said some people might be able to do it, but not everybody, including him. Yet I wondered why he was in my class, taking notes, eager to learn how to do better. It was like he wanted to be around people who wrote, but could not see himself as a successful writer. Sadly self-defeating. Then there were others present who were giggling and excited as they walked out the door, eager to get home and compose a story.
Look at that quote. Imagine today was the last day of your life. What do you want to accomplish in that day? It may or may not include writing, but you understand the gist of the message. Wake up and think...are my plans today what I really want to do? Then change. And if writing is part of that plan, then jump out of bed thrilled you can create, edit, and reach out to the world, because seriously, you only have so many days to make this dream happen.

Is it a flesh and blood killer -
or restless spirits?
According to Sophie, the resident yoga mistress and psychic, beautiful Edisto Beach becomes a hotbed of troublemaking spirits every August. But when a visitor dies mysteriously during a beach house party, former big-city detective Callie Morgan and Edisto Beach police chief Mike Seabrook hunt for motives and suspects among the living. With tourists filling the beaches and local business owners anxious to squelch rumors of a murderer on the loose, Callie will need all the help she
can get - especially once the killer's attention turns toward her.

SUCCESS STORY
__________________________________________________________________
Hi Hope,
My story that was recently accepted by Chicken Soup for the Soul is being featured on Pet Life Radio's webcast. < www.petliferadio.com/behumane.html> The producers were amazed that a pit bull puppy, rescued from a dumpster, could grow up to have a successful career as a service dog. She worked with me daily for over 10 years, making new friends for pit bulls wherever we went. Now retired, she still helps me around the house
and goes to her favorite restaurant once a week. She is partial to one where the peanut butter pie is served with a side of link sausage or chicken strips.
I was also able to get in a blurb for the series of novels that I am writing for Pit Bull Rescue Central. My Facebook page is Touring
With Pit Bulls, and tells a little about the stories. Book 2 is ready for release and is an exciting thriller that both dog lovers and mystery readers should enjoy. The crime is tempered by the humorous antics of the dogs, who always manage to drive their owners crazier than they normally are. I am hoping that the huge audience this show attracts will increase sales for the books, all proceeds of which are being donated.
Had I not stumbled across FundsforWriters, I would probably never have gotten the courage to start writing again. You have helped me sell several short stories, two novels for charity, and begin work on an espionage thriller that I am writing for myself.

FEATURED ARTICLE

Three Ways to Find Writing Jobs on the Deep Web
By Leah Zitter
It's harder than ever to be a writer. In 2014, the global market research firm Edelman Berland calculated that freelancers make up 53 million of the US workforce, whilst the Freelance Industry Report reported that half of these are writers. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics records that writing opportunities (albeit, for full-time writers) is and will be three percent slower than average over the next seven years. So what we have is a ravenous demand for writing jobs with
skimpy supply.
The results are two-fold:
a. Jobs go to the lowest-bidder: 'lancers tend to gravitate to so-called writing mills or bidding sites where pay is as low as $3 for 1,000 words.
b. Jobs go to the "king of the castle": Recruiters have their pick and qualified writers are routinely pushed aside for writers with degrees, hefty portfolios, connections, and boggling resumes.
So, assuming that you are as in-middle-of-the-stream as I, how do we get these steady well-paying writing jobs and beat the competition? Or do we have to surrender our "free" status for "employed"?
Last year, I coupled wise work with hard work and went to where writing job-sites (such as Monster, Indeed, FreelanceWriting.com) don't. I used my SEO/SEM and scientific research skills to dig into the Deep Web.
Berkeley University describes the Deep or Invisible Web as billions of data that escape regular search engines such as Google largely because pages on this Invisible, Deep, or Hidden Web are not linked to other webpages. Reasons include limited access, scripted content, or Non-HTML/text content. Examples are teeny groups on Facebooks, Web archives, and thousands of niche groups that are small enough to be invisible. Each of these contains ads that few, if any, freelancer writers see.
Over time, I devised and tested various means for scouring the Deep Web. Three of my methods are the following:
1. Meltwater IceRocket.com – This is one of the most powerful blog search engines. It searches blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and sites on the worldwide web. I use the advanced search options to type in certain words such as " paying submissions," the date (today only), and tag – which searches for words
in the post. Example [tag: writer telecommutes]. Meltwater Ice Rocket has proved its weight in online space over and again.
2. Twazzup.com – This is a new all-in-one Twitter search engine. Twitter has other search engines that you can use such as OneRiot and Louis Gray, but the helpful thing about Twazzup is that you can type in whatever interests you, and Twitter returns all – noise and all. Just yesterday for instance, Twazzup threw me a ghostwriting opportunity. The recruiter had posted her ad twice. I was one of two people over the last three weeks to
respond. The pay was great and competition nil.
3. Metasearch.com – This is a search engine that is specially developed for the Deep Web. I usually direct the engine to "Tweets-Topsy" then type in a term such as "writing jobs" and sort by latest results. (Topsy also shows me social analytics and social trends which helps my writing).
Each of these three - The Rocket, Twazzup and Metasearch - are just several of the many tools and algorithms that I use to dig the Deep Web.
So many of us legitimately complain about abysmal competition. Doesn't it make sense then to go where few others go? You're far more likely to get the jobs.

NORTHWORD MAGAZINE
http://www.northword.ca/the-magazine/contribute
We advise you to send a story query, not a finished article, for a report-driven story rather than an opinion piece. Your query should focus on regional issues, individuals, resources or events, to name a few. We need a compelling reason to assign an article: a specific angle, or news that makes the subject fresh. As a general guideline, a cover story is in excess of 1,600 words, a news feature around 1,100, creative writing around 800, column 600, and a brief 100-300. There must be a
regional angle. Northword covers the area between Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands in the west, Jasper in the east, and Dease Lake in the north. And yes, this is in Canada.
OHIO MAGAZINE
http://www.ohiomagazine.com/Main/WritersPhotographerGuidelines.aspx
Ohio Magazine publishes stories that celebrate Ohio – its people, its rich culture and heritage, and especially its travel spots. Feature stories in Ohio Magazine should meet all the above criteria. Typically, our feature well contains stories about interesting Ohioans, top travel destinations, Ohio’s arts and cultural institutions, as well as trend pieces and service pieces that provide readers with a statewide set of options on a particular topic. All features should have the
potential for wonderful art to accompany it, so the story has a strong visual impact on our readers. Profile pieces typically focus on an individual who can claim an impact – large or small – on the entire state, or whose actions would be of interest to our statewide audience. Trend stories can vary greatly, ranging from home decorating, gardening and food to arts and entertainment. But all must be proven emerging trends in our back yard. Travel pieces highly welcomed. Pays up to
$1,200 per articles up to 3,000 words.
