Message from the Editor
Here I am out in Big Bay Creek on my way to see the dolphins up close and personal at Edisto Beach. It's been crazy playing catch-up since I returned from a week at Edisto, but it was well worth it. A book signing at Edisto Bookstore, a podcast with Explore Edisto Magazine, a ride on Botany Bay Eco-Tours with Captain Don (who knew I was
the author of Murder on Edisto when I walked up), and some simple fun times watching a sunrise, feeding gulls, and eating way too much seafood. Can't wait to go back, but I managed in between everything to take tons of pics and lots of notes for the fourth Edisto Island mystery. In case you think I've missed count, book three is done, titled Echoes of Edisto, and it comes out in August!

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
_______________________________________________________________________
AN AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR'S VIEWPOINT OF WRITERS AND EARNING A LIVING
Two weeks ago, I spoke about writers without platforms wanting to throw their work out on Amazon and "see what happens." I promptly heard back from an audiobook narrator about the subject, which covers a unique but very common sense viewpoint. After all, many writers want to offer a narrator of their book a share of the royalties. Read this from her perspective and see what you think...
"Dear Hope,
I always find your newsletters to be helpful and apply the lessons learned both to writing and to other aspects of my artistic life. I also share your newsletter with every young person who tells me, "I want to be a writer" and every writer I work with (when I wear my actor/audiobook narrator hat) who asks me, "How can I sell more books/improve my skills/learn more about the business of writing?"
Your editorial comes on the heels of a number of requests from self-published authors who do not have a website, have not filled out their Amazon profile page, do not have an active Facebook presence, and all-too-often have clearly not had rigorous critique and editing as a part of their writing practice...and who want me to narrate and produce an audiobook version of their work for 20 percent of the royalties (which I must share with my Quality Control person and Sound Mastery
person).
I try to talk to them (gently) about their sales, and use other examples in their genre to help them see that they may sell as few as 12 audiobooks in a year. I cite many of the same things you mention. I show them statistics and rankings, remind them that 20 percent is between 50 cents and $2 per audiobook, give them suggestions for growing a fan base, encourage them to join a writing group...and guess what? They don't want to hear it. They want me to pay out of pocket for my
expenses, donate my time, and tell them that unicorns are real.
I actually had one author call me on the phone, not introduce himself, tell me he didn't have a computer and didn't really understand how "that stuff worked," invite me to do the honors of narrating his first book, and ask me how that would work. I tried to help by explaining different options and talking a bit about production platforms, costs and sales...and he yelled, "Every parent should want to buy my book!" and slammed the phone down to hang up on me in
the middle of our conversation.
Not to say everyone is like that - not by a long shot. I work with authors and companies who are hard-working, deep-editing, smart writing and marketing and thoughtful people, and I CHERISH those relationships, and will go above and beyond to make them happy!
So thank you, again, for a much needed call to action."
Yours Sincerely,
Holly Adams

Is it a flesh and blood killer -
or restless spirits?
According to Sophie, the resident yoga mistress and psychic, beautiful Edisto Beach becomes a hotbed of troublemaking spirits every August. But when a visitor dies mysteriously during a beach house party, former big-city detective Callie Morgan and Edisto Beach police chief Mike Seabrook hunt for motives and suspects among the living. With tourists filling the beaches and local business owners anxious to squelch rumors of a murderer on the loose, Callie will need all the help she

FEATURED ARTICLE

Get Paid To Write For A Contributor Network
By Shanon Lee
Last summer I joined The Mix, Hearst Digital Magazines contributor network. I wanted to see my byline in major magazines, but I had not created the time to diligently pitch editors. The lengthy editing process that many writers undergo once their article pitches are accepted by a major print magazine deterred me.
Since joining The Mix, my byline has appeared in popular digital publications including Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Woman's Day, ELLE, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan. I am regularly asked what it is like to write for a contributor network, how to join one and whether there is money to be made. Here is the skinny.
Why Join a Contributor Network?
Joining a contributor network can save you the effort of pitching independently and get your work in front of editors without the fear of rejection. You are accepted into the talent pool based off the merit of your pre-existing writing and can get on with the business of crafting stories without worrying whether your submissions will even be viewed. It is a foot inside the door, but it does not guarantee your writing will be published. If your article is accepted, it appears in a
well-respected publication that you may have read religiously over the years and grown to love.
How Do You Apply?
Applications can be submitted via the website and in some cases via email. I submitted an application to The Mix on their website and sent a separate email with a link to my online portfolio. After 30 days, I sent a follow-up email and received a welcome email with a contract three weeks later. Editors are bogged down with requests, and your application may get lost in the shuffle. It never hurts to check on the status of your application periodically and continue to build your portfolio
while you wait.
How Does It Work?
Each contributor network is different, but here is an overview of what to expect from The Mix. A daily email is circulated to members with topics and guidelines for articles that can be submitted on speculation. Editors may request draft edits and articles submitted with personal photos are preferred. If the article is selected for publication, the writer is compensated $100 with an opportunity to earn a bonus and residual payments. Other contributor networks ask for detailed pitches only
and send article assignment to select writers. Talk to participating writers to determine which contributor network is right for you.
Is It Profitable?
More than 60 percent of the articles I have submitted have been published, with one going viral – making me eligible to receive a bonus and residual incentive payments in addition to the initial $100 payment. While some contributor networks have a similar hybrid payment structure, others utilize either a pageview payment structure or offer a flat payment per article. Though I use it as an opportunity to earn supplemental income as my time allows, it has been profitable. Many writers
submit regularly and sell any declined articles to alternate publications for equal or greater pay.
Interested in joining a contributor network? Here are a few worth checking into:

Why you need a writing mentor and how to find one
Some people benefit from peer mentoring like a writing group. Some people just need someone to say "Hey, you can do this." Then they go off and do their thing. And others, need longer term support in order to move toward their writing goals.
In this webinar, we'll talk about the benefits of mentorship and how to find the right mentor for you.
I will be joined by Jennifer L. Pozner, author of Reality Bites Back and founder and executive director of Women In Media & News (WIMN). She is also one of the volunteer mentors for the mentorship program.
