EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
_______________________________________________________________________
A LETTER FROM A READER WHO AGREES WITH NO FREE - AND THEIR LOGIC
Hope,
I have agreed with you all along on the nothing for free topic. I can't imagine my utility company giving me a month of free service in exchange for my comment on how good the electricity was. They are selling a product. As writers, so are we.
I would add, however, as a READER, I rarely download a free book. What is the saying? You get what you pay for? The caveat to that would be that I have been introduced to a couple of my now favorite authors because of a $1.99 promotion. I am always disappointed when I read the book blurb, think it will be great, spend $15-$35 for it, and am disappointed because I don't like the writing style of the writer, the tone, the pacing, the flat characters, or whatever. Reading, for me, first
and foremost, is for enjoyment. I find that I am increasingly unwilling to risk the cost of a book on an unknown quantity.
But I will risk $1.99 and then go on to pay full price for subsequent books from my newfound author! One of my favorite writing duos is Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I spent $0.99 (years ago!) for my first. I now OWN every book they have written, including the ones each has written individually. Had I not spent that first $0.99 I would never know (and they would never have profited) because I didn't want to risk the disappointment at the cost of $25. Libraries are a good option,
but an emerging writer rarely has that venue to make their work available.
There are perhaps half a dozen authors I now read regularly because of an initial $1.99 download. A couple of them were totally unestablished when I first read them, and I now have the ability to say, "I read them when."
It's a balancing act, for sure, but as a writer, I agree: nothing for free. Introductory promotion perhaps, but don't give it away. That will become the norm, and we will all take on the persona of the starving artist...and starve.

A good novel tells us the truth about its hero, but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author.

Is it a flesh and blood killer -
or restless spirits?
According to Sophie, the resident yoga mistress and psychic, beautiful Edisto Beach becomes a hotbed of troublemaking spirits every August. But when a visitor dies mysteriously during a beach house party, former big-city detective Callie Morgan and Edisto Beach police chief Mike Seabrook hunt for motives and suspects among the living. With tourists filling the beaches and local business owners anxious to squelch rumors of a murderer on the loose, Callie will need all the help she
can get - especially once the killer's attention turns toward her.

FEATURED ARTICLE

Six Practical Tips to Find Clients
By Brianna Bell
In June 2015 I swallowed my fear and pride and made the decision to call myself a writer. Since establishing my own writing business I have found success in two niches: writing articles for popular websites and writing blogs for corporate clients. It's no secret that the corporate clients I have are my real money-makers, and my source of steady income.
Where are all these businesses that are willing to pay good money for a blog post? Follow these six tips and you will find more clients for your writing business too.
1. E-mail potential clients.
Sit down and write a list of 25 people you know who own a business and would benefit from a blog. Look through your Facebook and Twitter page. Ask your Mom if she knows of anyone. Then, write an email introducing yourself, the benefits of blogging, and exactly why you think this opportunity would benefit the individual business specifically. This email needs to be clear and concise and not feel like you sent it to 25 people.
2. Offer incentives to current clients.
If you are looking to build your client base it is a good idea to ask your current clients for some help. Once you feel you've established a good relationship with your client, approach them with an offer that they can't resist. For example, let your client know you are hoping to build your business and appreciate their trust and positive feedback. Then, offer them one free blog post per client referral.
3. Use networking sites to build relationships.
Use websites like LinkedIn and Facebook to network with potential clients. Share compelling information about the importance of online marketing and blogging to pique their interest. But make sure to take things one step further and reach out to those you are networking with. Introduce yourself and let them know you are available to talk more about your work and the value of your writing services.
4. Introduce yourself to other popular writers
Sometimes the way to break into the business is by networking with your so-called competition. Find a well-established writer who is willing to give you advice, and let them know that if there is a client they have to pass on that you'd be willing to contract yourself out to them. This means the writer is still making a cut from the project, doesn't have to pass on a client, and you get to grow your portfolio.
5. Put an ad in the paper.
This may seem like an outdated idea, but the truth is many potential clients simply aren't online. Consider putting an ad in your local paper letting people know you are a freelance writer specializing in corporate blogging. Make sure your advertisement is clear and professional, and consider hiring someone to make it for you.
6. Shout it from the rooftops.
The best way to find potential clients is to look at every single person you come into contact with as a potential client. Keep a few business cards with you at all times. Let people know on all your social media platforms what you do. Chat with people at your local Starbucks and in the checkout line at the grocery store. Introduce yourself to your neighbors. Make sure everybody knows who you are and what you do, and watch your business grow.
Now go out and use these tips to grow your client base. Come back here and let us know when you do!

UNCANNY MAGAZINE
http://uncannymagazine.com/submissions/
Uncanny Magazine is currently OPEN to all short story submissions. We are closed to unsolicited poetry submissions. Uncanny is looking for original, unpublished speculative fiction stories between 750-6000 words. Payment is eight cents per word (including audio rights). We will reject any story that doesn’t follow our guidelines and procedures.
EARLY AMERICAN LIFE
http://www.ealonline.com/editorial/guidelines.php
We cover a diversity of topics, all centered around America from its founding through the mid-1800s: History, Architecture and Design, Antiques, Studio Crafts and Travel. Although we cover academic topics, we don’t want academic writing. The best sign of a writer’s skill is to be able to present solid information in a readable, entertaining manner. We appreciate a deft touch with a bit of humor or word play to keep things interesting. A one-page story in Early American Life,
such as Worth Seeing, runs about 750 words. A typical feature may run 2,500 words. Note that it’s always easier for an editor to make a story shorter, so if anything, err on the long side. Never, however, go more than 10 percent beyond the length an editor assigns. We would estimate $500 for a first feature from a new writer, more if you are an experienced, skillful writer. If we assign a story to you, we will negotiate the rate before you begin work.
EARTH ISLAND JOURNAL
http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/guidelines/
Earth Island Journal is always looking for compelling and distinctive stories that anticipate environmental concerns before they become pressing problems, stories that scan the horizon for the next big issue. We want stories that will surprise, provoke, and entertain our readers and that explore new territory overlooked by other publications. We pay writers 25 cents/word for shorter dispatches (1,200-1,500 words) and for longer investigative features (2,500-3,000 words). You can expect to
earn about $750-$1,000 for an in-depth feature story. For online reports, the fee ranges from $50 to $100.
ENTREPRENEUR
c http://www.earthisland.org/journal/index.php/guidelines/
Entrepreneur delivers distinctive content on every road taken by the independent thinkers, builders and leaders driving economies across the world. High paying magazine. Entrepreneurs have a community with the magazine - a place they can go to learn how to face business challenges head-on and persevere. Every issue of Entrepreneur is as inspirational as it is informational, covering what inspires entrepreneurs as well as what they need to know to succeed. To break in, consider writing for
the online blog or pitching the smaller columns.
