EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
_______________________________________________________________________
I'LL THROW IT OUT THERE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS
For the third time in as many weeks, an author has picked my brain about how I write (daily), how I edit (daily), and how often I market (daily), then said they prefer to be a hobbyist. They cannot afford to invest the time into a book like I do, don't care to hire a graphic artist for the cover, prefer not to hire an editor, and don't belong to a critique group . . . so they'll write it best they can and throw it up on Amazon "and see what happens."
Those four words . . . like ten long nails scratching on a chalkboard.
I have no problem with people writing as a hobby. I encourage it, actually. I have no problem with people publishing as a hobby. I encourage that, too. But . . . when they hint that they do not have the time to do it right . . . when part-time is an excuse for not doing it throughly, I just want to get to a microphone someplace and rant!
Of course ranting to anyone is not the way to make them understand. I don't want someone shaking their finger at me, either. So I try to educate.
I explain:
1) A book not prepared with a professional eye, will not sell.
2) A book not edited hard by people other than the writer, will not sell.
3) A book placed on Amazon with no steady promotion, will not sell.
4) A book published without the author marketing herself, will not sell.
One gentleman threw those words at me, "and see what happens," and I simply replied, "It won't sell." He looked like I'd slapped him.
I smiled to ease the rift evident in his face. "Amazon, and the entire publishing world, is glutted with books. Thousands of authors are fighting to be heard, to promote, to sell, some with multiple books under their belt. Thousands of writers are fighting to make writing a career. With them clamoring everyday to write and market, to blog, sign, social network, travel, how do you think a reader will find your book with you doing nothing to promote it? There are just too many books out
there for that to be feasible."
We parted friends. I hope he heard me. I really hope he didn't spend all that time writing only to just throw it out there "and see what happens." None of us need any more of that. As both readers and writers, we can all appreciate seeing more of the well-written, well-edited, well-marketed books.
Thanks

WORDS OF SUCCESS
The great advantage of being a writer is that you can spy on people. You’re there, listening to every word, but part of you is observing. Everything is useful to a writer, you see – every scrap, even the longest and most boring of luncheon parties.

SUCCESS STORY
__________________________________________________________________
Dear Hope (may I?),
I have been reading and enjoying Funds for Writers for a number of years now. Always look forward to it arriving in my inbox at the weekend. I love the mixture of atmospheres - relaxed and family orientated plus very professional. Thank you for that.
This email is to boast that I have, at last, had a romance novel accepted for publication. As a successful short story writer I have taught creative writing in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire for many years. But when my son married his Swedish girlfriend in her home town, I was inspired by the lovely smiling land of Sweden to write a romance. Go Steal a Bridegroom by Denise Lawrence is published by Mezzanotte on Amazon/Kindle. My dream come true. It's never too late! I know I am
the 'other side of the pond' but I thought you would like to know that you have had a hand in this with cheery encouragement, positive advice, warm approach.
All Best Wishes to you and yours, not forgetting doggie.

Lessons Learned from a 65-Day Crowdfunding Campaign
By Dorit Sasson
Running a crowdfunding campaign is a great way to earn money while you write, but you have to be prepared for the daunting possibility that you may not receive all the money you hoped to raise.
Crowdfunding is not for sissies.
You must reach out to people in your network on a daily basis before, during and after the campaign, create a compelling landing page, and deal with rejection. You must be flexible, open to changing your strategies, have a social media plan and the courage to keep going.
For 65 grueling days, I reached out to more than 2,000 family members, friends and acquaintances in attempt
to reach my lofty $20,000 goal for my memoir Accidental Soldier: A Memoir of Service and Sacrifice in the Israel Defense Forces. In the end, I only reached $2,454. You might think my campaign a failure
because I didn’t meet my financial goals.
My main reason for doing this crowdfunding campaign was to raise funds, of course, but having fallen short, I'd be remiss to ignore the lessons learned.
1. Most of the childhood friends and family I reached out to didn’t support the project.
I also reached out to many acquaintances who I thought could connect with the subject matter. It’s a known fact that between 90-95 percent of campaign funding comes from friends and family. Turns out I have more acquaintances than reliable friends and family, which unfortunately, didn’t work in my campaign’s favor. So I concentrated on reaching out to fewer people and the right people who then activated their networks and brought additional supporters. Eventually 55
supporters came on board who will now spread the word about my book with their networks. Hopefully, they will leave positive reviews on Amazon. Word-of-mouth is still the most powerful form of selling, and this includes books.
2. Many of the people I reached out to were reluctant to give their credit card information.
When I realized this, I started to explain in each email how crowdfunding works with regard to my campaign. I explicitly stated that I was not raising funds for personal expenses, and that when a person becomes a backer of the project, s/he receives a copy of the book. Still, this didn’t result in additional funds, but I felt I owed my network an explanation.
3. Not everyone was interested in my story.
I was crowdfunding a memoir. Others might prefer novels or short stories, or maybe they aren’t readers to begin with. There were also those supporters who explicitly said they couldn’t see the philosophical and financial justifications for supporting my memoir. Despite these stinging emails, there was nothing I could do about this but simply move on. Thus is the nature of crowdfunding. Now that my book is available on Amazon, I intend to circle back to those emails to let those
people know.
Running a crowdfunding campaign is indeed, grueling and it is disappointing not to reach your financial goals. But it did create pre-marketing buzz, a small loyal following, and helped me hone my message. The emotional support I received was priceless, and the financial support appreciated. For these reasons, it was a success.
