EDITOR'S THOUGHTS

ENJOY YOUR CHOICES OR FIND NEW ONES
Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground. - Rumi
I saw this quote, pasted it here, and did away with the editorial I had written for this week. The quote prompted a spark such that I had to stop what I was doing and write. The idea is controversial, but that's fine. You can read it for its good intention, or twist it into something else. It's totally up to you.
The world is in love with writing. It's organic (or should be). It's a tool we can put into practice simply by picking up a pen. The simple idea that we can be creative and make an impact on life by making such a simple movement is magnetic to people, so they feel they have to try.
Other than run, what energy can you expend so simply and feel its rewards so intimately upon its completion?
So, when you find yourself grumbling about rejection, fussing about yet another blog post, scrambling to understand the best way to use social media to make your writing salable, stop and think...do you really want to do this?
By "this," I mean writing. Is writing your calling? I dare say to half of you out there, it is not.
How dare I challenge your skills, your mission, your ability to tell stories? I dare to by the very fact that the Internet abounds with grumpy, jealous, exhausted comments about how the writing world is so much of a challenge . . . and so not fair.
We fuss about the bad writing that makes money and the good writing that's ignored.
We fanatically hunt for the best tricks, how-tos, and secrets to writing well, organizing our time, or getting published.
The excellent writers, the names that slide off your tongue like your favorite television show or family recipe, don't do any of this. They simply write. They write like their life depends on it. They write because it's what they love. They don't care about the odds, the obstacles, the naysayers or the paradigm shifts of New York publishing. They thrive on their words and feed from their stories.
To them, difficulty is just today's challenge to the same end - to write for readers.
There are no excuses about lost time, family obligations, short income, or Internet speed. They don't wake up and decide whether they feel like it. They rise eager to return to the page, regardless ofthe environment or issues of the day.
It's what they do.
It's what you ought to be doing . . . assuming that writing is your calling.
What a miserable existence trying to force yourself into a calling, like choosing to be a minister without being beckoned by a higher power. Like being a doctor because your father was a doctor, when all you want to do is write poems. There's nothing wrong in admitting that writing is not a calling.
Give yourself permission to step away from writing and find that other calling you are shirking. Imagine the joy you're missing, the thrill you're pushing aside because you think you want to be a writer.
You only have one life, and it's best you find the right fulfillment for those short years you have on this earth. It's okay not to be a writer. It's not okay to spend your life struggling to be something you're not.
But if you are indeed hell-bent on being a writer, just do it.
P.S. TOTAL FundsforWriters is the extended version of this newsletter, with 70 markets, contests, grants, etc. and still at the ten-year-old cost of $15 for 26 issues. A great way to find opportunities to make money, without the hours of searching. Some subscribers have been around since TOTAL's origin a decade ago...they swear by it that much.
P.P.S. The winner of the 6-month Premium Subscription to Grammarly.com is . . .
GINGER MARCINKOWSKI. We had so many entries! Tons of them. Apparently Grammarly is a big attraction for readers seeking ways to take their writing to a higher level. Congratulations GINGER. I'll be sending your email address to Grammarly.com ASAP and good luck on getting those commas straight!
For more information about Grammarly, com's Premium Subscription, go to Grammarly.com. It's a worthy program.

SUCCESS STORY
__________________________________________________________________
WWHD? What Would Hope Do? I say this to myself so often that it has become my Mantra!
Hope, you have always spoken about jumping in, pounding the pavement, the long journey ahead, the difficult times, the “just do it” attitude . . . And so I did.
My first success was having a short poem appear in a small, literary magazine that is published in my community. I even got to read it at the inaugural party for the magazine! Hearing people clapping for my work was an indescribable rush.
My next success was seeing a call for writers in Stories of American Soldiers, Volume 3, and not only was it accepted and published last fall, but it won Honorable Mention!
Finally, I wrote and published a memoir of cooking and eating with my family.
All of this would not be possible without YOU, Hope, and your encouragement and wonderful suggestions each week. I look forward to my Saturday mornings with my tea, my breakfast, and FundsforWriters. Thank you Hope. Be well, and happy writing!

Building Your Email List:
Part 1: The basics
By Amanda Moon
Before social media became the communication vehicle of choice, many of us had email lists. Now that policy changes at Twitter, Facebook and other platforms are making it harder to reach our fans without paying to promote, it’s time to dust the old list off and use it again.
This week I’m going to give you some easy, immediately actionable ways to start growing your email list and next week I’ll tell you how to start using those names to drive sales.
Set up some sort or organizational system for any information you already have. I recommend signing up with an Email Management System (EMS) immediately. Aweber, MailChimp, MyEmma and Constant Contact all have great low- and no-cost options.
Create a simple privacy policy and post it on your website. A few sentences are fine. Mine is “I will never sell or share your information. And I won't spam you. Neither of us have time for that.”
An email address is valuable. Create an exclusive thank-you offering for those who opt-in. A free story or book, or a short video course; there are no limits. Think of an item that will grow your brand and be of value to your fans.
Now you’re ready. Using the tools provided by your chosen EMS, create a sign-up form. Build your incentive into the welcome message if you can.
Post the sign-up widget in the sidebar of your website or blog, where it will be available no matter what page someone is looking at. Post a link to it on Twitter (no more than once every few days, and don’t forget to stagger posting times). If your EMS offers Facebook integration, set it up. If not, post your link there too, and add to the back of your books, your bio, and anywhere else you have a presence online.
When you make public appearances, have an in-person sign-up option as well. Have a laptop/tablet with the sign-up form you created open, or a piece of paper and a pen. (Tip: Electronic sign-ups often receive a better response as people feel it’s more “secure”.)
Beware of schemes that offer you thousands of subscribers for a fee. Doing so will make you a spammer and could get your EMS account shut down. There are legitimate ways to grow your audience.
Use your network. Besides the usual suspects, like guest posts on blogs and newsletter articles, you could partner with someone whose audience you want to reach and offer a joint webinar. Trade promotion with another author and offer links to each other’s lists in the back of your book. Contact podcasts and offer to be a guest. Interviews: Make yourself available for them, or, even better, start your own series. Interview people you admire and distribute via blog posts or through podcasts. Host a contest. Create video content, such as a book trailer, or an introductory vlog. Mention the free incentive you created and post a signup link in the video description. The company I work for, NoiseTrade Books, allows you to upload content for free. When readers download it, they agree to be added to your list. You acquire a new reader and a new subscriber all in one shot.
To summarize: Organize and plan, create a sign up form, and tell people about it. Next week we’ll talk more about managing your list and how to create content that will keep your audience engaged and subscribed.
