  Message from the Editor

I am babysitting the grandpuppy for ten days, Harper, a black Lab. She's quiet, but doesn't mind letting you know she is there. Especially if you have a donut in your hand. She also thinks she's a lap dog sometimes, but ninety pounds is a little more than I can handle. Roo and Winnie, my magical dachshunds, think she's grand!

I just never thought I'd have grand puppies. Does that make Roo an aunt?

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
_______________________________________________________________________

THE WRONG QUESTION

I come back from a conference with all sorts of fodder for editorials, sometimes for a great article to pitch a magazine. A lot of times too much material, but that's part of what makes conferences energizing and rejuvenating. They provide spark.

Like your teachers said in school, or should've said if they didn't, is there is never a stupid question. At a conference, all questions should be welcomed. But that doesn't mean that some questions aren't the wrong ones to ask.

For instance, one writer asked, "Let's say I just quit my job and have this book to sell. How can I make enough money to live off of?"

I was moderating the panel, so I seized control first. I wanted to answer this one. I actually wanted to pull this writer aside and talk specifics with him. This was a very cart-before-the-horse question.

First, a writer leaves the day job only after he has made specific plans on what he will write, how he will market it, and what income he can expect to come in. Books are not quick money makers, at least not until you have a platform and have multiple books under your belt, and even then, only if you've mastered indie publishing. There are So many steps there to take BEFORE you quit the day job.

Items to consider before you quit the day job to be a writer:

1) How much money have you made writing while still on the day job. If you've made $5,000 while working ten hours a week, then hopefully you'll make $20,000 while working forty hours. Whoa. Doesn't sound like much, does it? Then stick to the day job until you've raised how much you make part-timing it. When you're making $10,000 or $20,000 part-time, then you might have something. Don't try to convince yourself that full-time will enable you to make way more . . . more than the hourly basis you're making part-time. Because writing full-time will involve administrative tasks like taxes, computer maintenance, and self-promotion that eat up your time without pay.

2) Make sure you have solid health insurance. One broken arm and no insurance can derail you time-wise and financially, to the point you'd kill to have that day job back again.

3) What writing income can you develop in addition to book revenues? I'm a believer in any writer freelancing, because one byline in a magazine can reach more eyes in a weekend than your book can in a year. It can also pay you faster. It can make you more Google-able. Books take forever to earn a dollar.

That writer didn't ask a stupid question. It turned into quite the good discussion. Asking a question that had its priorities screwed up became a learning tool for the entire room. Ask any question, because often the wrong question can turn into the right one.

NOTE AND A GIVEAWAY:
Speaking of learning tools, I've become a fan of Grammarly.com. After I wrote a heartfelt review for them, they asked if one of my readers would be interested in receiving a free, six-month premium account. I started to say, "Hey, but I want that!" then decided you folks were far more important. LOL  So...email me at hope@fundsforwriters.com with a comment why you'd love to have this six-month gift. And if you don't win, consider taking a peek at the Grammarly site anyway. http://www.grammarly.com/grammar-check
Deadline May 1.

SUCCESS STORY

Dear Hope,

I read in your March 20, 2015 newsletter that You & Me America's Medical Magazine needed articles. I checked out their website, and submitted a query email March 23rd. The following evening I received an email from the editor asking to read the entire article. The article was accepted! I don't have a publication date yet, but the check cleared and that's encouraging. Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
Janice Leilani Smith

Why Content Marketing Writing is a Fantastic Opportunity for Writers

By Mridu Khullar Relph

You’re a freelance writer. Sometimes you make good money with your writing, sometimes great money, sometimes nothing. You love the work, but you hate being dependent on a fluctuating income.

You’ve heard about this new-fangled thing called content marketing and how other writers make fantastic money doing it.

You’d like in on that.

Or perhaps you’ve already dipped your toes into business writing and content marketing writing waters, liked it and want more of where that came from.

So, what is content marketing writing and why should you care?

The Opportunity

Basically, businesses realized that with so much advertising vying for consumers’ attention and a lot of it being ignored, ordinary advertising wasn’t a great way to engage potential customers anymore. But, what is?

If you’re a Walmart or a Tesco, a free monthly magazine with tips on how to keep your home smelling nice and a few recipes with ingredients available at this particular supermarket (hint, hint) might be enough to attract customers to buy those ingredients, but to keep the brand image fresh and positive in their minds as well.

That’s content marketing.

Who’s writing those articles and recipes?

Freelance writers. Like me. And you.

Opportunities for Freelance Writers

You’ve heard it said before, but there’s never been a more profitable time to be a freelance writer. Don’t listen to the naysayers telling you that $50 blog posts and 10-cents-a-word reprints are all that’s available to a freelance writer. It’s not.

I’m a freelance writer who built my career writing for US and UK publications from India, and I averaged $400 an hour on my last content marketing assignment, so if you’re living in the UK or the US, the only reason you’re not making good money writing articles is because you haven’t yet found the right tools and information.

As businesses further understand the importance of good content, they increasingly invest more money in hiring writers to create that content. These businesses are both large and small — I’ve written content for large multinational financial services firms as well as small retail stores — but they may not even be businesses at all. Associations, non-profit organizations, even governments are beginning to understand how to use content marketing to further their goals and connect. And they need good writers to do so.

What’s in it For You?

Let’s not beat around the bush. You want to know how much you’re going to earn, right? Because another $50 a pop “opportunity” isn’t something you’re interested in. As the editor and publisher of The International Freelancer (http://www.TheInternationalFreelancer.com), I get dozens of emails a week asking if there’s anything better out there.

This is where it gets interesting. Like most freelancing, the pay varies across businesses (large corporation or small restaurant), industries (financial firm or environmental non-profit), and your level of experience. But unlike freelancing, I’ve found content marketing to pay a lot more as you move up the ladder. One to two dollars a word is pretty standard with businesses that know what they’re doing.

And because these businesses equate time and efficiency to money, your work is much quicker to get published, there are fewer edits, and pay is immediate.

More money and less aggravation with similar work. That’s why I think freelance writers should consider adding content marketing writing to their freelance mix.
