  Message from the Editor

Winnie understands that Roo is the alpha pup and Daddy's favorite, but when it comes to her momma, Winnie knows when she rules.

The doxies are enjoying spring, chasing geese, lying in the sun in soft new grass. The wood ducks are back and we spotted babies for the first time today. The turtles sun themselves on logs in the lake everyday - dozens of them. And a pair of osprey have taken up residence in our cove. That's a gift in itself. The garden is planted, and one day soon I'll have the guts to put on shorts and expose these too-white and too-old legs to some sunshine.

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
_______________________________________________________________________

THE OSPREY

Most of you know that I live on the banks of a huge lake. With about four hundred feet of frontage on a cove, I am lucky to experience all sorts of wildlife.

In the morning, birds sing, dance, dip and dive, happy at being awake. Ducks, coots, and geese paddle in the water then wander up to my bird feeder, scavenging for kicked-out seed.

In the evening, deer peer out of the woods, nibbling corn my husband tosses out. He laughs about putting their carcasses in our freezer for dinner, but I know he enjoys watching them come and go, feeling safe.

Today, however, I watched an osprey land on a branch thirty feet off the ground, right outside my study window. Ospreys love Lake Murray for its ample bass population, and the residents love watching these gorgeous birds of prey fly, dive and strategically snare a fish from the water.

This one sat for a long time, allowing me to pull out my binoculars. White head and chest. Yellow eyes, curved beak, he watched the water like the "hawk" he was. The breeze ruffled across his back and rear feathers, and he adjusted his balance a couple of times. But he never took his eye off the water.

Ducks swam off to the side. Turtles plopped off logs off to the side as if understanding this bird meant business. Finally he dove, smacking the water with talons, then flew away, his dinner unable to even flop it was so evenly gripped.

I've seen these birds come up empty. I've seen them attempt three and four times before successfully snaring their food. They never get frustrated. They don't let other animals bother them. The wind can blow one way then another. Regardless, they focus on their mission, and don't leave until they've won.

Osprey are beautiful creatures, living life their way. They don't care who sees them miss. They don't stop until they succeed. And in between their fishing duties, they soar, watching, learning, and enjoying the journey.

Try being an osprey.

SUCCESS STORY
__________________________________________________________________

Thank you, Hope, for listing competitions on your weekly newsletter. I never would have thought of entering such a contest had I not seen your suggestions week after week. But, while I shop my YA novel manuscript, I ventured into the local San Diego County Book Awards contest in the category of unpublished manuscripts. My YA novel, The Edge of Brilliance, juxtaposes the traditional hero’s journey against the struggles of fifteen-year-old Amy as she fights the demons of addiction and mental illness until eventually winning her battle and finding the hero within. I am happy to say that I am one of three finalists in the competition with announcement of winners due in June! Thank you for expanding my horizons and allowing me to add another honor onto my resume!

Thanks again,

The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow

By Linda Caldwell, Director, WCDH

What could you accomplish if you had a week or two to focus exclusively on your writing, with all your needs taken care of, no interruptions, no TV or chores or kids to distract you? Your days and nights to yourself, with the time and space to work at your own pace, in your own way?

In the historic arts community of Eureka Springs, two adjacent houses, surrounded by trees, contain eight suites with private baths, bedrooms and writing rooms. There are two shared kitchens, several large decks and two large gathering rooms with tables big enough to spread out, if that’s how you work. This is the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow.

For breakfast and lunch you can fetch supplies or leftovers, fill your basket and take it back to your room or kitchen. All suites have mini fridges and coffee makers. But dinners are special: Monday to Friday, Colony kitchen goddess Jana prepares beautiful and satisfying gourmet dinners for writers to share while gathered around a big table. It’s a time to socialize, unwind, process your work, get and share ideas in a creative flow.

To qualify, one doesn’t have to be a published writer, have a bestseller, be famous or have an agent. The only requirements are to step up, fill out a simple application form, have a plan for what you’ll work on while in residence, and submit a sample of your work.

Introspection and modesty dog the writer’s journey. Self-deprecating assumptions can stifle all forward movement: “Oh, I’m not a real writer. I’m not famous enough yet, eligible, educated, etc.” Our literary heroes have used those same disclaimers. And yet, given the opportunity and grace of uninterrupted time in a perfect environment, with solitude, support and meals, many residents astound themselves with the level of productivity they achieve and the quality of the writing they produce.

But no one can write all the time. When it’s time to take a break from the printed page, residents only have to step outside the door to find beautiful trails to wander, or streets lined with Victorian and Queen Anne houses to stroll. The entire city of Eureka Springs is on the National Historic Register, and residents are very careful to preserve the historic accuracy of their homes and public buildings. Downtown streets are lined with galleries and funky little shops filled with hand-crafted and unique items. The Eureka Springs Carnegie Public Library is worth a visit, and it’s only a half-mile stroll from the Colony.

On weekends, when Jana is not preparing dinner, Eureka Springs offers more than 42 sit-down restaurants with all kinds of cuisines, from burgers to more elegant offerings.

How much does this cost? The fee is $55 a night, including food, with a one-time Internet fee and a cleaning fee. That means you can get seven days and nights for $430. There is a one-week minimum stay and a three-month maximum.

Check it out on the website, www.writerscolony.org, or visit the Facebook page to see what other writers say about it: https://www.facebook.com/groups/149738778602/?ref=br_tf
