Message from the Editor
Went to Edisto Beach for research (yes, really, I did, though I managed to squeeze in some entertainment), and as always dropped by the Edisto Bookstore. I met Carroll, the employee on duty, as I walked in the door and he lit up when I told him who I was and that I was there to sign the bookstore's stock of my titles. He had me laughing, chatting, and I just wanted to squeeze him to pieces. He begged for a picture or two and even asked for an autographed poster for his home. Of course I obliged! Thanks for being such a cool fan, Carroll! This is what it's all about!

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS

MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA COOKBOOK
This week the famous Mystery Writers of America, those writers of infamous deeds, released the Mystery Writers of America Cookbook - Wickedly Good Meals and Desserts to Die For, by Kate White. If you love to cook, or also, like me, love to read cookbooks, this is one to add to your shelf.
It's hard to see mystery authors like Lee Child, Lisa Scottoline, and Mary Higgins Clark cooking instead of killing off people in stories, but they do. Apparently so do Cathy Pickens, Kathy Reichs, Catherine Coulter, and . . . C. Hope Clark. Yes, I'm thrilled beyond measure to have been selected to share space in this culinary tome with such names.
It's published by Quirk Books, and the editor is Kate White, the former Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan, and the New York Times best-selling author of the Bailey Weggins mystery series and three novels of suspense, including Eyes on You.
http://www.quirkbooks.com/book/mystery-writers-america-cookbook
It's a pretty book, too, with a cover that reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe and background stories that accent the recipes. Of course, mine is related to Carolina Slade and her love of all things porcine in Lowcountry Bribe.
Go over to Goodreads, if you get a chance, because I believe they're giving away a few copies there. And while we're talking giveaways, the publisher has been generous enough to give me one copy for giveaway purposes.
Enter at www.fundsforwriters.com or here https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WKJ258S . It's a beautiful book, and I've already gingerly tabbed some of the recipes so I don't bend the pages. There's some grand stuff here!
P.S. TOTAL FundsforWriters is the extended version of this newsletter, with 70 markets, contests, grants, etc. and still at the ten-year-old cost of $15 for 26 issues. A great way to find opportunities to make money, without the hours of searching. Some subscribers have been around since TOTAL's origin a decade ago...they swear by it that much.
P.P.S. On March 22-24, 2015, I'll be in Charleston, SC at PubSense Summit, probably my favorite conference of all I've ever been to. I'll be on three panels, but the rest of the time I'll be floating around. If you come, look me up and let's chat. That's what I'm there for. Oh - use FFW2015 when you sign up and you'll save 10 percent on your conference fee, plus I might just give you one of my novels - if you ask me nice in Charleston!

SUCCESS STORY
__________________________________________________________________
Hi Hope,
I often find great new markets in your newsletters - the reason I continue to subscribe. In the January 30, 2015 issue, I spotted a job posting for a paid gig with Foreword Reviews writing blog posts. The site is expanding their reporting to include features about independent publishers and news blurbs and was calling out for bloggers and journalists, for an audience of booksellers, publishers, authors and librarians. Having written a book review for Foreword in the past, I clicked on the job posting and noticed a YA book angle I thought I'd be particularly well-suited for, as I work part-time in a public library as a teen services Library Assistant. I customized my letter, pointing out the specific qualities I felt would contribute to an ongoing gig with Foreword.
About a month later, the editor wrote me back, saying he specifically picked me out because of the experience I mentioned. In addition, he noticed my musical background and experience and asked if I wouldn't mind writing on that subject (my favorite) as well, in regards to indie publishing. I'm wrapping up my first two assignments and sending them in as we speak. Not only did I get to interview the owner of an awesome indie bookseller specializing in heavy metal and other modern music books, I got to speak with the Senior Editor of Pitchfork Magazine about her rock critique book as well. Stoked!
Thanks again for finding the niches for me!
Best,
Kyrsten Bean

FEATURED ARTICLE

Spinning Hobbies Into Cash
By Trisha Faye
We are writers. However, we are not only writers.
Our lives are filled with myriad interests and passions. You can use your wordcrafting to turn these into money. The well-known adage "Write what you know" holds true.
Thousands of specialty periodicals exist. Many require freelance submissions to fill their pages with informative and entertaining articles. Brainstorm different avenues for articles based on your interests or hobbies.
First, consider exam article ideas that focus directly on the hobby, such as beginning steps, collecting information, or its history.
Second, discuss specific techniques or skills associated with the hobby. For example, using essential oils in soap making, or incorporating dried botanicals in candle making.
Third, try the human interest angle. Interview a special person in the field, highlighting their knowledge and expertise.
For example, when I moved to Texas, as a weaver and spinner, I brought boxes of fiber with me. A year later, when it all still sat in a shed, unused, I decided to pass the wool along to other spinners. I met Mea Stone, who raised goats and crafted with their fiber. Her story of how she began her hobby farm, despite suffering from MS, intrigued me. I thought it would inspire others also. Two local newspapers paid for "Putting a Positive Spin on Life." Later, Recovering the Self published "Herd of Therapists."
Another example is my vintage quilt collection. I discovered an old set of 1934 friendship quilt squares in a yard sale, traced the names on the squares, and later delivered them to a museum in Iowa. This offered a wealth of publishing opportunities. These squares turned into a short children’s story, two Quilter’s World articles, and paid speaking engagements at the museum and a quilter’s guild.
Do you garden? Do you have favorite plants? Try publications such as:

Do you collect antiques, baseball cards, or comic books? Try specialized publications such as:
Antique Trader (http://www.antiquetrader.com/contactus/)
Journal of Antiques (https://www.antiquesjournal.com/contact.html)
Treasures Magazine (http://www.losttreasure.com/content/writers-guidelines)

Are animals your passion? Hundreds of magazines exist. Just a few are:

Eating Well (http://www.eatingwell.com/writers_guidelines)
Yoga Journal (http://www.yogajournal.com/about_us/editorial_guidelines/).
The possibilities are endless.
Do you make jewelry? Travel? Own a therapy dog?
How about radio controlled vehicles or model railroads?
Are you a woodworker? Ghost hunter? Glass artist?
Don’t rely on Writer’s Market as the only resource for consumer magazines. Their listing is only a small slice of the magazines available. Go to the book store and peruse their selections. Stop at local libraries and see what they carry. Check out feed stores, hobby stores, or craft stores. Each will carry different publications that offer possible writing assignments.
Each hobby usually has at least one or more periodicals. Use your hobbies and passions. Write what you know and spin your hobbies into cash.
