AWESOME CONFERENCE
I promised last week I'd tell you about the conference I attended in Charleston, SC. PubSmartCon empowered writers rather than coached/preached/lectured to them. Y'all, I've been to a lot of conferences, and this one got ME excited! I came home with 20 pages of notes. Tons of starred items to change, to test, to plan.
What amazed me most was the freedom and openness about self-publishing. It wasn't what you settled for. It wasn't what you attempted. It wasn't the tongue-in-cheek method of publishing I see at many places. Places where the agents and editors sit together and everyone else glances over at THOSE tables, wondering what it's like to be affiliated with them. Events where the traditional people sit on one side of the room and the indies on the other.
You know what I particularly liked? No books were sold. None. Hugh Howey was the keynote and he hung around most of the time, yet he sold not one single book. CJ Lyons was there, and she had no signing or table of her gazillion books. The conference was about learning, not about flaunting our wares. Somehow that made us all seem closer, on a more similar plane.
Here's an example of the self-pubbing liberty felt throughout the room. Hugh Howey said to everyone in attendance: "It's not a good thing to have a three-book contract." He said that it tied you down, limited your options. It was better to go book-at-a-time with traditional contracts because the publishing world was moving too fast to tie yourself down for so long. I watched agents and editors twisting in their seats, eyes darting. Like I said, a unique environment indeed.
While I'm a hybrid and already saw the purpose of self-pubbing, I still left with a deeper respect for those indie authors earning a living. And people...there are a lot of them now. I sat next to a girl (yes, she was easily young enough to be my daughter) who made $38K one year and $380K the next and she wasn't even on the program.
Some may say I drank the Kool-Aid, but as both a presenter and an attendee, as a traditional and an indie author, I left enthralled with the possibilities before me as a writer. Driving home, I rued the fact I was the age I was, and that these tools were not around when I was younger. Tools like:
Pubslush.com - a crowdfunding resource for writers that goes way beyond just crowdfunding.
Bibliocrunch.com - an online resource connecting writers with the publishing professionals they need, such as editors, graphic designers and formatters.
Biblioboard.com - patrons first mobile library - reshaping the modern library.
BookDesignTemplates.com - templates to design your books. (LOVE THESE!)
Bublish.com - a fun promotional tool usable across multiple social channels.
WhereWritersWin.com - top shelf author marketing services, publishing resources and more.
CreateSpace.com - self-publish your print books, then connect with Kindle and pub your ebooks.
Scratch.com - Jane Friedman's digital magazine about writing + money + life
BooksILove.com - entertaining phone app for book reviews. Load it on your phone then review Lowcountry Bribe, Tidewater Murder or The Shy Writer Reborn. They are there, set up by me. Click, click, click and you're done. No writing. No creative thought. They do it for you based upon the buttons you click. I'll be watching!
There were so many more I just can't list them all. Next time you decide to attend a conference, consider this one. It opens your mind to think about all the possible ways you can make your writing work, and sell. I'll be there in 2015. I hope you will, too.

Success Story
Dear Hope,
I wanted to let you know about a contest entry that ended up helping me sneak in the back door with one of my goal magazines. After reading in TOTAL FundsforWriters about an essay contest that Ladies' Home Journal was having, I submitted a story called "Can We Get a Cat Now?" Even though my story didn't win the contest, the magazine liked it so much they contacted me and asked if they could buy the story. They even sent a professional photographer to my house to take shots to illustrate! My story is tentatively set to appear in the June issue, which goes on sale the first of May.
Many thanks to you and your wonderful newsletter for gathering and sharing all these opportunities!

Writing You Can Sell on Etsy
By Melissa Mayntz
For many writers, writing is not just a way to pay the bills, but also a craft and an art form. What better way to pay bills more effectively than marketing that craft and art on Etsy, the e-commerce website dedicated to crafters and artists?
As a sales platform, Etsy promotes unique craft and vintage items, and good writers can offer a range of products suitable for this marketplace without needing to be experts at handicrafts or antiquing. Written "crafts" that can be sold on Etsy include:
- Customized Letters: Letters from Santa are the most popular, but other customized letters from fictional fairies and holiday characters can also sell reasonably well. Offer personalization in each letter and use colorful stationery and fonts for more appeal. Take care to avoid copyrighted items, however, such as mascots or other trademarked characters.
- Poetry: A thoughtful poem can be an ideal gift when paired with an inspirational or related photograph, and writers can team up with photographers to offer unique items. Other poetry options include customized cards or verses for use with weddings or memorials.
- Toasts: Like poetry, personalized toasts are ideal crafts that writers are in a unique position to offer. A few detailed questions can offer enough personal insight for a thoughtful and creative toast perfect for a wedding, job promotion, new baby or other celebration. Package the toast with a high-quality copy of the text on themed stationery as a more tangible gift.
- Templates: Writers often create custom newsletter, brochure or other templates for clients, and selling customized templates on Etsy can be lucrative. Theme templates for different types of craft-oriented businesses and offer writing services along with the template for even more sales, but be sure not to offer templates that are already in use by other clients.
- Resumes: Resume writing can be big business, and experienced resume writers can offer their craft at reasonable prices through this online marketplace. Just like templates, the resumes should be personalized and finely customized to suit each client's needs, and different general themes can be offered for different sales.
- Books: Novelists and book authors can take advantage of Etsy by offering their book for sale with a related craft item. A themed bookmark or other trinket that relates to the story or manuscript - recipe cards with a cookbook, a homemade children's toy with a picture book, vintage magnifying glass with a mystery - can become a great gift set and a book sale.
Getting started on Etsy does take a financial commitment, just as writing requires you to purchase office supplies, business cards and other equipment. Registering and buying on Etsy are free, but selling items costs $.20 per listing (listings last four months or until the item sells, whichever is first), plus a 3.5% fee on the sales price. Those costs are easy business deductions, however, and can quickly be covered with profits from individual sales.
When you make your first sale, the potential profits don't stop with just the one item you've sold. Enclose a business card or promotional bookmark with each package, and include your website or blog information with every listing. Slowly but surely you will build a unique platform for your writing and will advertise your business to an unusual but no less profitable niche of customers and clients.
