WE ARE DIFFERENT
Recently I was reading the Suite T blog of Southern Writers Magazine, and ran across a post entitled "Do You Hear What I Hear?" It was about a man telling a story about a big dog and two children. The dog pinned one of the children. The man hit the dog, yelled obscenities, freed the child, and then learned the dog was just big and appeared threatening, but wasn't. Each listener of his story focused on a different aspect, though. I won't retell the entire tale here, but the point is solidly
made that each of us hears what speaks to us in a story.
http://southernwritersmagazine.blogspot.com/2014/03/do-you-hear-what-i-hear.html
In Lowcountry Bribe, some women took great interest in the abuse included in the story. One woman had been a victim of abuse. Another ran a shelter. So when I wrote scenes that came anywhere close to what they were sensitive about, that topic became key for them. They might even evaluate the book based upon that theme.
Others focused on a woman turning into a tiger over her children. Others paid more attention to the character's flaws, and how she accomplished herself in spite of them. Others thought she was too flawed, making too many stupid mistakes. Many loved the scenery because they were from the Carolinas, or had vacationed in the Lowcountry.
So many viewpoints. Some we don't even imagine as we're writing.
We cannot control how people view our work. We can't control the triggers.
Someone wrote me recently upset that a person in her Facebook group criticized her for something she said. She did not mean it in the manner in which it was taken, but she was so upset she was considering some major changes in her writing and promotion. She totally forgot about those who did not take issue with her, and who, in fact, agreed with her.
The public is comprised of innumerable characters, each with unique experiences that taint how they interpret what they read, and therefore, interpret you. Do not let the differences restrain you. Some are overly sensitive, and others not sensitive enough. Someone will take issue with you. Recognize it when it appears. Listen to see if you can glean anything from the noise. Then travel your path.

WORDS OF SUCCESS
Get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. Get a big red magic marker. For each day that you do your task of writing, put a big red X over that day. After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain.

Success Story
Hope:
I am writing to thank you for your service. Because you posted a call for submissions to the Chicken Soup for the Soul's the Dating Game anthology in your newsletter, I now have the distinguished honor of sharing a byline with you in the book. Chicken Soup was never on my radar, until I saw the call. And the submission was not about gaining a publishing credit; it was a chance to tell the world about Clare's amazing story. I can't describe how thrilled I am to have had a part in documenting
her history.
Also, after reading your story in this Chicken Soup book, I think I have a better sense of why my sister falls so hard for the men in black.
Have a great day,

THE ART OF OPINION WRITING By Suzette Martinez Standring
What creates career longevity among opinion writers? When I asked famous columnists, not one mentioned social media, or an exponential increase of Twitter followers. Instead
Ellen Goodman and other iconic writers whose careers span 20 to 40 years believe mission, creativity and bravery always trump technology. Never is this more true than in opinion writing.
You don’t have to be a professional op-ed writer to have an opinion, but the opposite does not always hold true. What often poses as commentary online are attacks, rants, and parroting. As Ellen Goodman said, “If you write from a narrow, pretty didactic point of view, you may get a lot of attention - it’s like screaming in a public place - but you probably won’t last a long time. You won’t really have an effect. You’ll only have an effect on the people who already agree with you.”
In my new book, The Art of Opinion Writing: Insider Secrets from Top Op-Ed Columnists, the early struggles, success strategies, and practical writing advice are shared from fifteen opinion writers who have won The Pulitzer Prize and journalism’s highest awards. I expected to write about the mechanics, best practices, and steps to creating great commentary, and I quickly learned that only when the “how-to” is matched with the authenticity of “who I am” does career longevity result.
Column writing is the only form of journalism that allows a personal portrait of the writer. Joel Brinkley, one of five foreign affairs op-ed columnists, has a passion about foreign governments. Jeffrey Seglin’s intense curiosity with how conflicted people make ethical decisions formed the basis for his popular column, “The Right Thing.” Cal Thomas, Tribune Media’s most widely syndicated columnist, revealed his belief in Jesus Christ underpins his worldviews and op-ed. What lies at the
heart of your own writing? Can it fuel and sustain you during the long haul?
Opinion writing is a big umbrella for life. Claim an aspect as your own and learn from the industry’s pioneers. Decades ago when men ruled the opinion pages, the feminist movement put a new grid over the lives of women, and Ellen Goodman was one of the first to make “the personal” political. Connie Schultz won the Pulitzer Prize for making the daily moments of the everyday laborer tell the big picture story of society. For Joanna Weiss, a former entertainment reporter, pop culture is
mirrored in politics. Derrick Jackson intersects race, sports, and world events with opinions that reflect the African-American experience.
In The Art of Opinion Writing, we learn career longevity results from bravery, to say what needs to be said and to be fearless in the telling. Dave Lieber of the Dallas Morning News shared how to pen opinions that emotionally move a reader through vivid storytelling. Forget the bullet points, and statistics are secondary. The best can spark a national conversation or move others to action with a fresh viewpoint and information. They excite readers into saying, “I didn’t know that!” or “I
never thought of it that way.” Interview after interview with each extraordinary writer said exactly that.
