WHEN YOU GET SPANKED
Life isn't always sweet and kind. Nobody debates that. But still, some situations sting, and we feel abused when they occur, regardless who's right, assuming anyone is. "That's not fair" resonates from our childhood, and we have to remind ourselves what our parents taught us, that life just isn't fair.
As writers, we get spanked by editors who think we write tripe, readers who say they know good writing but can't write a paragraph without a noun/verb disagreement, critiquers who see your flaws (or think they do), and Amazon reviewers who download the book during a freebie offer then rip it up for not being worth their time. We get riled when we're confronted with being told we're wrong, even madder when we're told we're a disappointment, or should've known better, or are just plain
stupid.
We hate unfairness, which is how we see these spankings. We instantly seek validation. They're wrong ... they don't know crap ... they're idiots ... and so on. They might be wrong. You might be wrong. And reality might be someplace in between.
If you've followed me for very long, I write from actual experiences, seeking the lesson in each situation that crosses my path. I've been told I can find a lesson in picking one's nose. I found that response a bit off-putting, but hey, I found the compliment in it.
Recently I experienced a week of spankings. A copyeditor took me to the woodshed with some edits on one of my novels. A family member jumped all over me for things not of my doing, some not even of my knowledge. And readers responded to an advertisement in FundsforWriters with words like:
I'm really disappointed to receive this tripe from you.
As with everyone else you are greedy as well.
What a way to mislead poor writers. Shame on you.
(Really big sigh.)
One of these responders had twenty lines of blatant promotion at the end of his email about his work and sales. Another told me people should not charge to aid writers, and that charging for a service, instead of offering it for free to help humanity, was a ripoff.
I tried to sit back and take a deep breath, and maintain a healthy hold on my knee so it did not jerk inappropriately. I wanted to hold onto my energy so I could put it to greater use than arguing back. Opening confrontation would've only fueled a fire I didn't need lit.
Life is up and down. We can learn from both the peaks and the valleys, from the geniuses and the fools. But it's best to step away from most fights, study what caused them to begin with, and see if there's a lesson to be gleaned. Not only will the pause save you a few bruises and scrapes, but you might be able to find a piece of practical knowledge amidst the mess. You definitely learn who your friends are.
But you don't want the following to happen:
1) Doubt yourself. When someone says you stink, you start wondering if you do. Give yourself time to get over the initial setback, then think rationally.
2) Instantly feel guilty. It may not be your fault! The other person may have issues, or a history you know nothing about. Don't take on guilt right away when it may not be yours to take.
3) Overthink. Wow, I'm a pro at this. Don't think because someone pointed a finger at you that you failed, and that maybe you shouldn't have done what you did. Maybe you shouldn't be writing at all. Maybe you suck at writing. You know how that goes. Don't let it whirl out of control.
Learn, accept some things, ignore others, stay calm, seek all the facts, make only the most appropriate changes, and sleep on most of your decisions. You'll be just fine.
~HOPE

Success Story
Dear Hope,
I entered the Midlifecollage.com contest when I heard of it back in December 2013. At 43, I fit the bill as a second time mom and had no problem submitting my story, "Life After Birth!" I ended up winning first place! It was a tough competition and this experience empowered me! This was my first time winning any writing contest and I'm still on a high!
Thank you so much Hope for your encouragement and the resources you share with us writers. We so appreciate your hard work.

BUILD AN AUTHOR'S PLATFORM BY BECOMING AN INTERNET RADIO SHOW HOST
By Dorit Sasson
In today's ever-changing age of publishing, acquisitions editors at many publishing houses evaluate authors’ worth based on how many fans they have, how much publicity they can acquire and what kind of network they're tapped into. According to Dr. Deborah Siegel, a writing coach and co-founder of SheWrites.com, the editor's definition of a writer's platform is "qualifiable proof that you're the person to write this book and quantifiable proof that you have the ability to promote it." In
today’s digital age, promotion means online promotion, having a social media presence, followers and fans. Internet radio has become one of the fastest and most popular ways to distribute the story and message of your book even before it is published.
Each week for my radio show, “Giving Voice to Your Story,” I interview expert bloggers, speakers and authors of notable influence on the issues of craft and writing the personal story. Most recently, I've interviewed popular blogger, author and speaker Nina Amir, author of How to Blog a Book. Other lineups include: Linda Joy Myers, president of the National Association for Memoir Writing. Julia Cameron, creator of the well-known The Artist’s Way and The Right to Write appeared on my show on
December 20th.
By associating myself with people of influence, my credibility and expert status as an author is enhanced. Authors now approach me, requesting to be on my show to build their platform. Some past shows have attracted as much as 500 live listeners, and the number continues to rise the more I promote the replays. I now have a following that connects with me and owns a sense of who I am from my voice, not just my writing.
When my mother passed away earlier this year, I shared lessons and writing techniques I developed while writing my memoir in progress, a story about what it was like growing up in the shadow of a famous classical pianist. Listeners called in and left comments on both my Blog Talk Radio and Facebook promotional pages. One listener even became a client!
The most popular venue for Internet radio is Blog Talk Radio. Most radio stations use Blog Talk Radio as their infrastructure. As the most established venue, it offers an easy start up. One can open a very workable free account, but the best deal for a solo account is $99. Paying $249 gives the most promotion.
The key to building a listenership is to work the Internet.
• Find your tribe. Find groups on LinkedIn and engage them by asking questions about the subjects you are passionate about. You can even ask them which special guest they would like to hear on a future show. • Create a Facebook event and invite your friends. During the show, post quotes on the page and ask your audience questions. • During the show hold a drawing for a book. • Repurpose a show by writing a blog post and share the news of each replay on your social media links.
At the end of the day, editors want to see quantifiable proof of the numbers of the people you can reach and how you can reach them. In the digital world of marketing and promotion, this is your “online footprint.”
As you begin building your author platform, see how you can work from a deeper place of service rather than think about who you are and how you come across. Each time I broadcast, I ask myself what listeners and readers will gain from tuning in. Involve your listeners as much as possible and watch your listenership grow.
