FundsForWriters: Tips and Tools for serious writers to advance their careere!
Volume 14, Issue 2 | January 10, 2014

Message from the Editor

Putting away the Christmas stuff on a cold, wet, rainy day. That's my catch-all pantry and you don't see the poinsettia/ manger/ Santa mess on the floor under me, or my floppy running pants and LLBean fuzzy sheep slippers. A total confusion of theme and color. After this, I'm finalizing my presentation for tomorrow for the Winston Salem Writers. Hope you can be there! Stay warm and dry.

WRITING DIVERSITY

To some writers, diversity in writing means writing both scifi and suspense, or YA and adult fiction. To others, diversity means writing nonfiction and fiction. To the hungry writer, however, who hasn't published a book (and most of the ones who have), diversity means writing for whoever will pay you.

Many of you scowl at this concept, but when I decided to take my writing seriously, I took this mindset and ran with it. I'd already written for years for the Federal government, as if those clips meant anything. I'd already written a novel that I couldn't sell to my mother, much less a publisher in New York. I attempted greeting cards, but my humor is not that sharp. So, I decided to scour the Web for anyone who'd take me on.

I wrote resumes (I used to be an HR director). I wrote short articles for new websites. I wrote book reviews. Then I launched into magazine writing, which I adored! I still wish I had time to write for more magazines, but if I wrote for magazine, then I'd wish I had time for writing novels - LOL. The point is, I kept my mind open and my eyes and ears tuned in to any topics that happened across my path. The experience served me well.

Recently, writer Shawndra Russell pitched a piece for FundsforWriters. Since it addressed a book she'd written, I required her to send me a copy so I knew what I was in for. I've refused many a writer and her book in this manner. It pained me to reject those people, but usually the quality was not there, or else the topic was run-of-the-mill stuff I could find on a zillion blogs.

I fell in love with Shawndra's "How to Become a Freelance Writer in 30 Days." This is not a scratch-my-back-and-I'll-scratch-yours situation. I vetted her and her work like anyone else. Before long I caught myself printing off this ebook so I could sit in my recliner and highlight pertinent points. I'm forever seeking new ideas for when I speak, and here was a wealth of information I could reference. Oh my goodness, she has such a common sense head on her shoulders! My kind of reading. She gets to the point. She makes the point easy to understand. No fluff. No junk. This is usable stuff.

I never thought to ask my boss for more writing work, telling him that I was working on a novel and wanted the experience. She also tells you how to start your blog appropriately, and how to properly email blast for work. Of course I loved it when she said to join your Chamber of Commerce, something I've preached for years. Did you know you can start without clips? Did you know your favorite local businesses might hire you, just because you are local?

I endorse writing books when I see they are practical, not based upon the writer. This one has my stamp of approval, and I hope if you are interested in starting your freelance writing career, that you consider this book to get your feet under you.

Check out "How to Become a Freelance Writer in 30 Days." I've highlighted the heck out of my copy. Use the code "ijreaders" to save $10 on the price.

FIVE TIPS FOR LANDING BUSINESS CLIENTS AS A WRITER

By Shawndra Russell

The definition of writer can be a narrow view (“I write only women’s fiction”) to a broad view (“I use words any way people need me to”). I quickly learned to embrace the latter when I took the freelance plunge two and a half years ago, because, frankly, only pitching editors wasn’t adding up to my monthly income goals. This approach has led to a wide variety of contracts: website copy, blogs, social media posts, newsletters, emails, press releases, descriptions for online directories and more. With this approach, I was able to triple my income from 2012 in 2013. Here are five ways you, too, can land writing gigs for businesses that need content now more than ever in this fast-paced, online-heavy life.

1. Create a list of every business you’ve ever written about. Have you interviewed business owners for any of your articles? Then these folks are great people to pitch your other writing services to. Start your email by reminding them who you are and sharing a link to your article about them if possible. Then, inform them that you offer other writing services and ask them to keep you in mind should they ever need a writer. Since you’ve technically already done them a favor by writing an article about them, they’ll be more open to your inquiry and already have a good feeling about you.

2. Make a list of businesses you’d like to write for, and pitch them. Pitching a business owner is not that different from pitching an editor. You introduce yourself and share a couple of ideas, then follow up in a week or two. Start with flattery just like you would an editor, but instead of writing, “I loved this recent article,” say, “I love your wine” or whatever product/service they provide. Flattery works.

3. Seek businesses that do not have a blog or newsletter. Content is needed now more than ever, and if a business isn’t blogging or writing a newsletter to their fans, they are missing out on some major benefits. Offer to write one blog or newsletter for free to get your foot in the door, and share some stats about the power of blogging like this article, “Top Blogging Statistics: 45 Reasons to Blog.”

4. (Gently) point out a flaw in their online presence. Are they posting to Facebook three times a day? Do they still not have a Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram account? Do they have a dismal online listing score on getlisted.org? Be friendly and flattering at first, but then point out the hole in their online marketing that you’ve found and offer to fill it. I’ve landed several clients this way.

5. Don’t be scared to try something new. Business owners need all kinds of support, so don’t shy away from opportunities that might involve tasks that aren’t necessarily writing related. I once ran a usability testing session for a new tech startup and had absolutely no idea what that even was up until two weeks before I led the group through the developing website. I’ve also taken more photos than I care to remember for social media even though I don’t consider myself a stellar photographer. But you learn as you go and take on each new challenge with professionalism, which will help you establish a great reputation and eventually get businesses seeking you out instead of you constantly hustling for more work.

Good luck and tweet me with any questions at @ShawndraRussell.

FREELANCE MARKETS

WHOLE LIFE TIMES http://www.wholelifemagazine.com/writers.php --- We are open to stories on natural health, alternative healing, green living, sustainable and local food, social responsibility, conscious business, the environment, spirituality and personal growth; in short, anything that deals with a progressive, healthy lifestyle. WLT accepts up to three longer stories (800-1,100 words) per issue, and pay ranges from $150-200 depending on topic, research required and writer experience. We have a number of regular departments that pay $75-150 depending on topic, research required and writer experience. City of Angels is our FOB section featuring short, newsy blurbs on our coverage topics, generally in the context of Los Angeles. These are generally 200-400 words and pay $25-35 depending on length and topic. This is a great section for writers who are new to us. BackWords is a 750-word personal essay that often highlights a seminal moment or event in the life of the writer and pays $100.

AUTOMOBILE QUARTERLY http://www.autoquarterly.com/about_us.php --- Automobile Quarterly features articles on significant automobile marques and interesting individual cars, biographies of famous people in automotive history, competitive vehicles and races, as well as automotive art and collectibles. The magazine is noted for the use of both original full-color photography and rare black-and-white photos. Its hard-cover format sets it apart from all other automotive publications. Pays 35 cents/word or more.

RIDER MAGAZINE http://www.ridermagazine.com/contact-us --- For the motorcycle enthusiast who loves to travel and tour. Doesn't accept freelance submissions in all departments, but does in the following:

FAVORITE RIDES These are mini travel stories that require the use of a few good color photos, and about 700 to 900 words of copy. They're a nice genre to try because they are short, focused and relatively easy to write. Your comments should focus on how the route, place or destination might be of interest to a motorcyclist. Short day trips near your own home are good sources for ideas. Don't forget the photo caption sheet, AND A ROUTE MAP of some sort for our illustrator to work from. Payment upon publication: $200.

FULL LENGTH TOUR/TRAVEL FEATURES This type of story offers a good opportunity for prospective contributors. Invariably, the Rider travel feature requires the use of spectacular color photography and is given considerable emphasis in the magazine. Depending upon the way a travel feature is used and its quality, payment (upon publication) varies from $250 to $750. Don't forget the photo caption sheet, AND A ROUTE MAP of some sort for our artist to work from. These stories are almost never more than 1,800 words.

OTHER TOPICS Almost anything in the world of motorcycling is fair game for Rider, but be sure to query first. Some examples: interesting old motorcycles, unusual museums or events, motorcycle achievers, stand-out motorcycle organizations and clubs.

ROAD KING http://roadking.com/writers-guidelines/ --- Road King is a bimonthly magazine that seeks to educate and entertain over-the-road truck drivers. Road King is owned by and distributed free of charge through the TravelCenters of America truckstop network. We cover new truck equipment, technology, finances and driving tips, as well as non-trucking issues such as health advice, sports, music reviews and hobbies. Please take a look at a recent issue and make yourself familiar with our departments, which include “High Octane,” “Gear Box,” and “Kickin’ Back.” Pays up to $500.

AIR & SPACE MAGAZINE http://www.airspacemag.com/contact-us/asm-contact-us.html --- AIR & SPACE/Smithsonian is a general interest magazine about flight. Its purpose is to enlighten and to entertain. Its goal is to show readers, both the knowledgeable and the novice, facets of the enterprise of flight that they are unlikely to encounter elsewhere. The emphasis is on the human rather than the technological, on the ideas behind events, rather than a simple recounting of details. For first-time contributors, writing a department - a short piece that often has a personal point of view - offers the best chance for acceptance. Pays $1,500 to $3,000 for major features ($1/word). Pays up to $300 for smaller departments.
