Visiting with Linda Apple, a lovely person, writer, FundsforWriters
fan and friend at the Ozark Writers League conference in Branson,
Missouri. Spent two hours talking The Shy Writer Reborn to the
group in the morning and an hour squeezing in FundsforWriters
advice in the afternoon. Two near and dear subjects for me to share!

CONFERENCES - WHEN SIZE MATTERS

I've attended many conferences, as attendee and presenter. My
favorites were smaller in attendance. Recently I've attended
several small conferences and events. I just got back from
The Business of Writing Summit in Louisville, Kentucky. Founded
by Larry and Peggy DeKay, the event hones in on business aspects
of writing, not the how-to-write stuff. (Check out Peggy DeKay's
book, SELF-PUBLISHING FOR VIRGINS on Amazon.)

In The Shy Writer Reborn, I counsel writers on identifying what
size and manner of event suits their personalities. My personal
preference is the under-100 level. Get much larger and you struggle
to make a connection with the audience.

As an instructor, I'm competing with much bigger names, which means
I don't get to connect with as many writers. I network with way
more people at an under-100 conference than one with 200 to 400
attendees, where everyone is busy running here and there, fighting
to hear the best speakers, pitch a book, ask a burning question.
The exchange between speaker and attendee is diluted. I'd prefer
to leave a conference remembering the attendees, not a sea of faces.

At a smaller conference, I can afford to delve into deeper
conversation and come to know people, instructors and attendees
alike. For instance, in Kentucky, I came to know:

1) Victorine Liese - A New York Times Bestselling novelist who
achieved her status with a self-published book. She spoke about
how to take your self-publishing to a new level.
http://victorinewrites.blogspot.com/

2) Michelle Hummel - A social media expert who analyzed my web
site and participation on social media and gave me great advice.
http://michelleshummel.com/

3) Daniel J. Lewis - An award-winning podcaster who has convinced
me that podcasting is a ball and a new tool I need to add to
my reportoire. He made me realize I was already equipped to
start! http://theaudacitytopodcast.com/

4) Sheri L. Wright - A Pushcart Prize and Kentucky Poet Laureate
nominee and the author of six books of poetry who also had a
great active Kickstarter project I donated to.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1624065865/tracking-fire-gathering-the-essentials

5) Amy Collins - A huge book marketer and distributor who threw
so much material at me in forty minutes I got writer's cramp.
Here was a person who knew how to get good self-published books
into the stores. http://www.newshelves.com

I was able to chat with these people at my leisure over two days
when they or I weren't speaking, an impossibility at a larger
conference.

New writers should strongly consider dipping their toes into
conferences with a small one, where you can readily ask questions
and learn at a slower pace. More seasoned writers can make a
deeper impact. But shy writers can take their time, feel less
intimidated, and absorb material at a small conference, where
everyone knows everyone before the day is done.

GETTING THAT MEMOIR TO PAY

By Cynthia Briggs

You've published your memoir and now it's not bringing in the
kind of money you expected? It's disappointing, but it's not
unusual. Turning your memoir into a money-maker is one
of the greatest challenges in writing and publishing.

But don't be too quick to round-file your book and abandon the
life-long dream of writing your story. There are other fairly
simple ways of bringing in extra cash from your labor-of-love.

1. The biggest step in earning more money from your memoir is
by turning it into fiction. Right now you're probably saying,
"Oh, come on, that's crazy!" Ask around, it's done far more
often than you'd think. Novelists will tell you that publishers
frequently tell them to write a novel around their memoir.
Publishers know that in order to make a profit on a memoir
written by an unknown author, it must have rare bones similar
to that of Angela's Ashes. They'll be more enthusiastic about
accepting and promoting your work once they see it written
as fiction.

2. Try submitting snippets of your memoir to various publications.
My best example is the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, which is
basically a collection of mini-memoirs. They pay $200 per story
plus 10 copies of the book in which you're to be published.

3. Sell portions of your memoir to magazines. Woman's World
Magazine publishes a weekly magazine that offers opportunities
for earning money for true stories written in the first person.
They pay $25, $100 and $250 for non-fiction stories. Or, pluck a
section from your memoir, change the names, embellish it and then
submit it as fiction, which pays $800 for romances and $500 for
mini-mysteries.

4. Newspapers are always looking for quality human interest stories
for their hard copy and on-line publications. For seven years I was
paid to write a nostalgic cooking column for a newspaper where I
drew fully from my early-life experiences. Pay depends on the
individual publication.

5. Consider speaking engagements. I've spoken at senior centers,
churches, women's groups and military organizations. Network or go
on-line to find groups with interests that align with your memoir.
The larger the organization the more they're able to pay.

6. Enter contests. Contests accept fiction and nonfiction pieces;
here's another place where you can take a slice of your memoir,
fictionalize it and enter it in a contest, or write a piece of it
as creative nonfiction. Entry fees vary, as do winning prizes.

7. Teach a class. I contacted the Continuing Education Department
of our local college and was hired to teach adult cooking, cooking
for kids, memoir writing and publishing classes.

8. Craft shows and farmer's markets offer a relaxed, country feel
that can set the mood for memoir sales. Bring along your gift-of-gab.
I've sold more books at craft shows than through any other venue.

Earning additional funds from your memoir is entirely doable. The
key is to think outside the box. Stay focused, flexible, and above
all, creative.
