THE REAL-PERSON EVENT

These days, most writing events are online. Few authors do the
book tour bit since so many readers are sticking closer to home,
happy to bury their noses in their Kindles and Nooks, unwilling
to go out into the crowds any more than they have to.

Add to that the fact that few bookstores do signings now (and
many of them don't like doing the ones they do), and you see that
public appearances can be painful for authors.

However, whenever I do one, people adore them. They talk about how
great it is to see the real person, how interesting it is to hold
a conversation, how nice it is to visualize the face with the words.
They love receiving autographed books. I often write way more than
"Thanks, Hope" in them, personalizing the inscription as much as
possible because they DID go out of their way.

But if bookstores don't like signings, where do you go to do them?

1) Seasonal fairs

I know writers who rave over these. The attendees at craft-type fairs
are expecting to spend money, and you will most likely sell more books
in this environment than in a bookstore.

2) Personal homes

Treat it like a party. The host/hostess sends out invitations, provides
treats, and sponsors you. You speak a few moments, answer tons of
questions, and sign books. These are so much fun! Instead of Tupperware,
why not your book? With 20 people in attendance, you're likely to sell
that many books.

3) Private appearances

A writing or book club can sponsor you to teach for a half day or
entire day about a preferred subject. The fee can include the cost of
your book, or you can sell the book at the back of the room. The last
one of these I did had only 35 people in attendance and I sold 30 books.

4) Schools

Schools hold book fairs, features speakers at assemblies and hold
career days. As an author, you might be able to sell on the spot, but
if not, you speak and then hand out information about your books for
parents and teachers to purchase online or at the local bookstore.
Don't forget PTO/PTAs. They have a budget to not only pay you to speak,
but can also host you at an event where you can sell books afterwards.

5) Libraries

Libraries hold special events throughout the year. Whether you appear
alone or with a group of other authors, you will make an impact since
you are talking to pure readers.

In any survey, you'll find that word-of-mouth is still the number one
way to sell books. To start that word-of-mouth flowing, growing, and
spreading, you have to face people, in person, eye-to-eye. Then you
flash that personality of yours, shake hands, embrace the fact that
these people love to read, and you have a natural, symbiotic relationship.

Don't give up on signings...just get strategic with them.

Bloggercise your writing

Probably the best writing advice I ever received was this:

Keep a Blog.

Let me share with you a few reasons why and how my blog has helped
me begin earning as a freelance writer.

In my former life as a music teacher I found that the best musicians
were those that didn’t just practise their scales and pieces the most;
they were the ones that listened to music too. Both things are
essential exercise for the musician.

Writing is the same.

Your ‘scales’ are the articles, books, stories and poems you write;
your ‘listening’ is the literature you read. The old saying is true:
a writer is a reader first. Keeping a blog helped me practise my
‘scales’ to develop my technique and my ‘listening’ was the hundreds
of blog posts I’ve read as I mingled in the blogging community. I
discovered what was popular, what was en vogue and what worked for me.

Here’s a summary of just how my blog has helped develop my craft:

• Experimentation

Although my blog, kenthinksaloud, is primarily about Bangladesh
where I work for a charity organisation as a teacher, I played with
all sorts of ideas - many of which have become lucrative for me. For
instance, I started posting book reviews after enjoying some books
with my kids. I had one accepted by Paste magazine last year and now,
every time I read a book, I’m making money from it by writing my
thoughts and sending the review off. Reviews don’t pay much but lots
of magazines take them and they more than cover the cost of buying the
books I love to read anyway! I would never have dreamed of writing
reviews had I not done them for fun on the blog.

• Deadlines

Keeping deadlines with editors is a big deal. For a while I made
myself write three posts a week, each with a self-imposed word count,
even when I didn’t feel like it just to practise meeting deadlines.
Now I’m getting plenty of paying gigs, I’ve reduced it to once a week
but after writing hundreds of posts, dashing off 500 words is a breeze now!

• Finding an audience

My main topic is something of a specialist interest, but as I explored
ideas I was surprised which subjects were very popular. My son and I both
have ADHD and writing about this provoked huge response. I am now
submitting articles about ADHD to editors.

• My blog sells me

Several of my articles and stories, re-written from the blog, have been
published by magazines and newspapers around the world. At the same
time, the blog has been there as a showcase of my writing style. A
publisher contacted me recently and asked for my book manuscript based
on the blog. They’re keen to publish – a dream for any writer! The best
bit is that half the work is done because the posts are already written.
What’s more, on the strength of the blog alone, they’ve also taken a
manuscript for a novel I wrote last year and are excited about working
with me.

So, I recommend bloggercising for you today. You can read what’s out
there, try a variety of styles for yourself, practise meeting your own
deadlines, build an audience as you learn what’s popular and then turn
those winning ideas into paying articles and maybe even books that
catch the eye of publishers.

And if nothing else, bloggercise is fun and good for you. Give it a go
– you never know where your posts might take you!

to $3,500. This program is designed to support research which deepens

field of study, and community of practice or broader community, as defined
by the applicant. The Distinguished Merit Award recognizes a
particularly outstanding project with additional funding support in
the amount of up to $2,500 to one Artist Research and Development

Program provides solitude, time, and a comfortable place for Texas
writers or writers who have written significantly about Texas. The
retreat is on a 250-acre ranch about twenty minutes west of Austin.
There are two distinct fellowships - one for September 1 - December
31 with a stipend of $6250 a month (the Ralph A. Johnston Memorial
Fellowship); one for February 1 - July 31 with a stipend of $3,000 a
month (the Jesse H. Jones Writing Fellowship). Length of residency
may change for maintenance or program needs. The fellowships are
available to both creative writers and writers of non-fiction. Non-
