Hope Roo Porch Lake

More frost expected during our nights, but Roo and I love the
warm, sunny, moderate days we're having now. And she's learned
to chase birds. Any birds. Except the egret. Guess a six-foot
wing span would intimidate most puppies.

WHERE'S THE MONEY?

Received emails this week from several people with a common theme
which always prompts an editorial from me.

"Love the newsletter. You always give us great motivation but
I don't see anything about finding more money for my writing."

I blink, wonder what I'm doing wrong. I always think that you guys
have been around forever, and I fear that you will run off if I
cover topics too elementary. But then, many of you are new here,
some of you are new writers, and I need to get out of my own world
and recognize the needs of my readers!

FundsforWriters has gravitated into contests, grants, freelance
markets, and publishers/agents in terms of funding categories.
"Funding" meaning income of any sort.

So when someone receives my newsletter, with at least twenty
opportunities to earn income as a writer, and asks where are the
money opportunities, I see the problem.

1) The writer has sided on the need to make money over the need
to be a creative genius. There ARE two sides to being a writer.
One is to earn an income, and the other is to earn a legacy. One
has to lead over the over, but we have to pay the consequences for
whichever one we choose. There are both kinds. Having gravitated
recently into the fiction world, I tend to let the motivational
side of me take over the business side. Most writers need to pay
the bills.

2) The writer is fairly new in the profession, or has suddenly
decided that the creative side isn't paying the rent. That's
realism stepping in, which is wise since many writers tend to
escape realism and wind up with little writing income.

So, my advice on finding "funds" is this, in very abbreviated thoughts:

1) Decide what you write. You cannot write anything and everything.
No, you aren't that good. Niche writing makes you better. It can be
a wide niche, but it needs to be a niche.

2) Saturate your local area. Magazines, newspapers, newsletters of
local businesses. Speak at local events. Speak at schools. Join the
Chamber of Commerce and let people know you are a writer.

3) Select three levels of writing. Easy writing that you know you
can land; mid-level writing that makes you use your talents and
challenges you (and brings in a little more money). and top-level
writing that consists of the projects you dream of acquiring.
Maintaining a 25/50/25 percent ratio keeps you climbing and
improving.

4) Submit to magazines. Trade magazines are great. Do a search
engine hunt for trade magazines and you'll find all you need. And
yes, regardless of the niche, you can find topics that fit. Everyone
has business cards, attends conferences, hires employees, needs
a website. The general ideas can fit most anywhere.

Now...while I try to send a wide variety of "funding" opportunities
to FFW readers, I can't promise to match every need. But I'm open
to ideas and wishes. In the meantime, define yourself and start
writing.

That's what is so great and so concerning about this profession:

1) The sky's the limit;
2) You are the only thing holding yourself back.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK

Hi Hope!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the encouragement and newsletters
and Facebook posts that you do. I've certainly enjoyed them and
they've helped me a ton. I finally was able to push through and
get my book "The Homeschooling Highway: How To Navigate Your Way
Without Getting Carsick" done and published...and I know that your
realness and honesty and words of "sit down and do it!!" helped a
lot. So thanks again...

ARTICLE

Don’t Underestimate the Value of Your Own Town

By Barbara Weddle

Used to be, when I thought about travel writers, while longing
to be one myself, I thought only of those lucky few fortunate
enough to land all-expenses-paid assignments to produce articles
in places like Burma or Bhutan. I never considered the possibilities
my own city had to offer in the way of travel-related articles.

My thinking changed, however, when I subscribed to a travel
newsletter. Every month the newsletter spotlighted a city, either
foreign or domestic, giving a full logistics report. As I lived
in Lexington, Kentucky, at the time, I queried the editor of the
newsletter and asked would she be interested in a logistics article
on Lexington. She said yes.

Even though I’d lived there for several years, I’d been too busy
raising four sons and working full time to get around and actually
see what Lexington had to offer. Too, Lexington was simply where
I lived and worked; as such, I never considered it newsworthy
enough to write about.

When I received the assignment, however, I saw it in a whole new light.
Endless opportunities for travel articles abounded, not only for the
assignment I already had, but for a string of other articles--the
bourbon distilleries, the wineries, the racetracks, the nightlife,
the culture, the sports.

From my initial article I was able to pitch other variations to
different magazines. I found travel-writing opportunities in
Lexington’s surrounding communities also. In Keene, Kentucky, only
15 miles outside of Lexington, for example, I saw the possibility
of a travel essay in a rambling wood-frame hotel, once a popular
summer resort and place of safety during a cholera panic in the
mid-l800s. As a portion of the hotel also currently housed a down-
home-type restaurant that featured the best Southern cooking I’d
ever tasted, that also became an article.

The Wisconsin town I now reside in is so isolated and pitiably
small that it really doesn’t offer enough to bring that traffic
jam of eager tourists to its city limits. But, Green Bay, home of
the Green Bay Packers and historic Lambeau Field Stadium, is only
a mere 30 miles away, and I’m already putting together a list of
possible travel articles on that city.

If you’re a beginning travel writer, live in a small town and have
limited travel money, consider checking out nearby cities as I
now do. If you can’t check them out personally, the visitors center
of just about any location in the U.S. will be happy to supply you
with all the brochures, magazines, city maps, etc. that you want
upon request.

Also, even though your city or town IS small, perhaps it’s connected
to other small towns (Door County in Wisconsin, for example, a
string of very small towns, runs along both sides of the peninsula
and attracts hundreds of tourists each year). If your town is part
of such a string of towns, and barring it has at least one notable
attraction, include it as part of a driving-trip travel piece of a
larger whole.

To get an idea on how to write a travel piece on your city or town,
decide on the format you wish to use--short getaway, essay/story,
historic place, driving trip, little-known or undiscovered place,
etc. Then, using an example article from the publication you wish
to write for, follow the example.

towns all across the U.S. for several years. She has written travel
articles, book reviews, service pieces, and stories for more than 200

SOUTHERN REVIEW, THE WRITER, THE DOLLAR STRETCHER, WOMAN’S WORLD,
