Roo has grown so fast and has about outgrown my lap. Ten pounds.
She helps me write and is dying to answer email. So far I've
stopped her from any pranks. If you get something strange from
me, drop me a note. I'll try to catch it before she covers her tracks.

TWO STEPS TO PICKING OUT THE RIGHT PROJECT, AND FINISHING IT
A writer recently cried on my shoulder about not being able
to complete a project because he had so many good ideas.
"I've become a project hopper. I start but don't finish. Like
convicts who look through iron bars at nervous guards, these
story ideas glare at me from their Microsoft prison cells and
question my authority. A walk to clear my head. Journaling.
Listening to classical music. These exercises sometimes liberate
'the One.' I eventually find my way clear of the forest and pick
the lonely little Charlie Brown Christmas tree. But, good grief,
it’s a painful process."
Two suggestions, my friend.
1) Set time on your calendar for a business meeting with yourself.
At least monthly, format your goals for the next month...and
make sure you look back at the previous month to study what
you accomplished (or didn't). So many people wave this part
of being a writer. Who likes to plan?
In my experience, some writers plan and plan, and rarely produce.
They talk about what they're going to do (you see them on Facebook
and meet them in writing groups all the time) and rarely see their
projects through. Their opposites write and write and don't want
to stop and plan what they will do with what they are writing.
You, however, must be different. Monthly, (or weekly is preferred)
take a moment to study where you're headed and where you've been.
Did you write a piece last week and could not find a home for it?
Did you find a market you loved but couldn't come up with a piece
that fit? Or did you start writing one piece, then stop and
switch to another, and so on? How many times did you do that?
Is this a habit you might need to break?
In other words, study your writing habits? Which are not good?
Which came through for you?
2) Whatever project you pick, go with it to THE END.
I know you probably get tired of listening to me talk about my
novel, but the lessons learned from the journey just about
outweigh the results of the project itself.
I wrote Lowcountry Bribe over two years, after work, at night.
I did a few short pieces in the middle of this effort for
diversity and entertainment, but my focus was this manuscript.
I made myself reach THE END. Couldn't sell it. So I put it on
the shelf.
It wasn't a partial manuscript. It wasn't an idea. It was a
completed job. Eventually, an opportunity presented itself for
me to resubmit. I could only do that because I had a completed
project, one that I could verbalize with a beginning, middle and
ending. Not just a partial attempt, and far beyond a rough idea.
When you hold your meeting and decide on your projects, lock
the ones you don't select away. Don't look at them. Don't look
at what others are doing and get drawn away. Finish what you
start. Do that a few times, and you just might find opportunity
knocking harder on your door, because you have an inventory of
finished products. What also helped sell Lowcountry Bribe? The
fact that I had book two completed already.
Nothing is more frustrating to me as a writer than to see a
hard drive full of partial projects. I delete most of those.
Seeing them will only muddle your senses as they accumulate into
a huge list, eventually representing your inability to complete
what you start.
Bottom line: Pick what to write...and finish it. Repeat.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, Hope!
I'm writing to say thanks for all the work you do in putting
out Funds For Writers. I was googling around, looking for information
on residencies for writers, and came across the link to subscribe to
your newsletter. I'm so glad I did!
Thanks to you, and the link you supplied, I submitted to Crimson
Romance, an e-Imprint of F+W Media, and I have contracted to publish
my third novel with them. That Magic Mischief will drop early in 2013.
As an American author based in Ireland, it's been tricky trying to
secure representation. I had thoughts of self-publishing, but am
happy to give this ePublishing a go!
Cheers,
Selling Halloween: Making Money with Spooky Stories
By Steff Green
Halloween in January? Yep. When you write seasonal articles you
have to think six to eight months in advance. While you cozy up
to a fire, staving off the chill from snow and ice outside, start
making notes about seasons months from now . . . like Halloween!
Halloween is my favorite holiday - when else do you get to enjoy
dressing up, eating candy, scaring your friends, and having
spooky good fun? For the writer, Halloween is also a great holiday
to make a few extra dollars - as many magazines are looking for
Halloween-themed articles and features.
As well as running Halloween features alongside regular content,
many magazines like Better Homes and Gardens release a special
Halloween issue, and they need articles to fill these pages.
Halloween features don't even have to be spooky or scary. Many
magazines expand on Halloween's seasonality by creating Fall-
themed content.
Like any seasonal feature, Halloween stories need to be pitched
several months in advance, so get your spooky cap on and start
submitting for next years Halloween features.
Halloween Travel
Have you ever explored an historic building that you knew was
haunted, or enjoyed a city ghost tour hosted by a local historian?
Features and travelogues about strange destinations, unexplained
goings-on at historic locations, and spooky tours that are fun
for kids and adults alike make great Halloween travel features
for local or national magazines.
Craft Projects
Halloween is a great time for kids and adults alike to get
creative with costumes and decorative projects. If you've got
a crafty idea for a spooky costume, a cute Halloween accessory,
or a simple project kids can create themselves, send a tutorial
in to a craft magazine. Kids and parenting magazines also often
accept craft tutorials.
Spooky Food
With harvest season in full-swing, food is definitely on our minds
over Halloween. What about a spread of pumpkin-themed dishes for
the family? Or recipes for healthy Halloween treats the kids will
love? Food magazines love receiving innovative twists on seasonal
favorites.
Halloween horror tale, there are plenty of magazines waiting to
receive your spooky stories.
Lifestyle Features
Halloween definitely isn't just for kids. Adults love to dress
in costume and enjoy Halloween parties and dates. Perhaps you
could write a guide to grown-up Halloween parties, or a recipe
for pumpkin-cocktails for a lifestyle magazine. Do you know a
couple that got married on Halloween? Maybe you could write about
their unusual wedding for a bridal magazine?
Parenting Tips
Between helping with costumes, keeping kids safe and helping
them make healthy choices, Trick-or-Treat season can be a
nightmare for parents. If you've got some tips on making trick-
or-treating safer, healthier and more fun for children, parenting
magazines would love to know how.
Treasure Valley Family Magazine
Parents Magazine
http://www.parents.com/parents/file.jsp?item=/help/writers_guidelines
Halloween is a great jumping-off point for a whole range of different
article pitches. Magazines are always looking for content on this
popular holiday, and submitting new ideas around old topics will
definitely get your query a second look. Good luck, and happy haunting!
