TOMATOES IN NOVEMBER
Many of you know I love my vegetable garden. Right now it's
pretty with fluffy cabbage and broccoli, and every couple of
days I pick off the lower leaves and give the chickens a treat.
I have plenty of collards in the freezer
This fall, I was tickled to see volunteer tomato plants pop up
after I'd cleaned out the dead plant stalks and wilted vines.
Nine of them. Wasn't quite sure which variety, but there they
were, thriving, with cold approaching.
So I cleared out a spot in the corner. Then got wrapped up in
the holidays and a deadline or two. Then I bought plastic sheeting
and lumber, then got distracted a week or two. Then a day before
Thanksgiving, I finally constructed a greenhouse large enough to
hold about six good healthy tomato plants. Then it got too dark
to see.
Thanksgiving arrived, as did family, and we reveled in the
holidays. Then Friday night, as we watched college football
games, the temperature dropped to 31 degrees.
All of my tomatoes froze and died. I was left with an empty
greenhouse. And I kicked myself for not acting sooner.
I ran around hunting tomato plants, but nobody had them. My only
option was to wait until late winter, and use the greenhouse to
start seed, or plant a couple of veggies early. For now, however,
I have to wait.
I should have planned better.
Spinning this into a writing lesson, this ordeal was like
realizing you have this idea you might like to publish.
So you write during the rare moments you have available in
your busy schedule. You think about the project here and there,
then you do part of it on Monday and another the following Saturday,
maybe editing what you've already written instead of concluding the
first draft. Weeks go by. But you have no real deadline, and no
fire in your belly about this project anyway so why knock yourself
out?
Suddenly a deadline looms for a contest, and you decide to enter.
Or a friend publishes a book, and you remember when she started
her story after you started yours. You watch a writer win an
award and another sell ten thousand copies. Suddenly you want
to be like them, so you start throwing stuff together to get your
book on Amazon. You impose a ridiculously short deadline, thinking
it's doable, and you're a martyr of sorts cramming all these tasks
into a brief time frame.
Your tomato is going to freeze.
Without planning, without diligent attention to craft, profession,
and art on a regular basis, you do your writing an injustice.
Plan your projects. Love your work well enough to deliver them
properly to the world. Throwing them together will only result
in low sales, few reviews, and personal frustration, possibly
a depressing realization that you don't like this profession.
Planning and attention not only make you happy, but they'll
make your tomatoes grow much nicer as well.

12 REASONS TO FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK IN DECEMBER
On December 1, a reader donated a subscription to TOTAL and asked
me to give it to a deserving person. So I mentioned it on Facebook,
asked people to give me a number between 1 and 100 and explain why
they needed the TOTAL subscription. If there was a tie, I'd make
a selection based upon the most creative comment.
We had such a blast that I decided to do it a dozen times in
December, like the 12 Days of Christmas. Between now and
Christmas, about every other day, expect to see a giveaway on
my Facebook page. We're drawing the tenth one tonight!

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
I just wanted to let you know that I just found out one of my
poems has been accepted for publication in Torrid Literature
Journal. I have you to thank on two accounts. The poem was written
as a result of one of your suggestions last fall to write a poem
commemorating the oldest man in England. By the time I finished it,
it was too late to submit, but I did submit it to the Torrid
Literature Journal, another one of your suggestions I believe.
I'd forgotten all about it, and am deep in the final stages of
editing a compilation of my poetry. It was one of those times
when the final stages were proving to be tedious and difficult,
and getting this news lifted me up. In November, I'm appearing
as one of two featured poets for the Monterey County Poetry
Consortium, and this just fuels my fire! Thank you for being you,
authentic, honest, and supportive. If you ever doubt that what you
do matters, please remember that so many of us listen to what you
say, and appreciate your generosity. I truly believe supporting
other writers and artists can only be a good thing. Thank you
again, Hope.
ARTICLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Purpose-Driven Writer
By Thomas Smith
Once upon a time there was a little book with a title similar to
the title of this article. The book was released and it made a
huge splash in the publishing industry. It sold like those proverbial
hotcakes we’re always hearing about.
The thing is, the book itself was OK...but the marketing was amazing.
It utilized a new approach called pyromarketing. Greg Stielstra, part
of the Zondervan marketing team for the book, had the idea to
approach 1200 pastors of large and mega churches directly. That gave
them a potential audience of 400,000 church members. Then they worked
their pyromarketing program and the rest, as they say, is history.
Later the process was repeated with a little movie called The Passion
of the Christ. Maybe you’ve heard of it.
Essentially, the publisher (and movie distributors) looked at the
target audience and asked the question, “How do we reach them
specifically?”
A version of that question is one we as writers need to ask ourselves.
We need to become more purpose driven in our writing efforts. Whether
I am teaching at a writers’ conference or reading through one of the
online writing venues I am a part of, it doesn’t take long to come
across beginners (and more than a few intermediate level writers) who
can’t figure out why their career has stalled.
Well maybe I can help. Let’s start with the basics. What is your
purpose as a writer?
The dictionary defines purpose as an intended or desired result;
end; aim; goal. So, with that as our basis, let’s look at the
question as it relates to us as writers. If you are following this
site/newsletter regularly (and you should be), then the assumption
is you want to be published. The intended and desired result is a
contract and a check. The end is to see your work in print or shared
in some other media. Your aim is to become a professional writer; to
make money in this profession. Your goal is to put your work in the
hands of editors who seek what you write and write work so compelling
they want to say “yes” to you.
In order to make those things happen, we must approach our writing
with an equal sense of purpose. For example: What kind of writer do
you want to be? A general freelancer? A business writer? A novelist?
A poet? A technical writer? An essayist? Do you want to write fiction?
Non-fiction? Both? Do you want to write genre fiction? Mainstream
fiction? Literary fiction? Creative non-fiction? (Shouldn’t it all
be creative?)
Once you determine what you want to write, who is buying it? What
does the market look like? What’s hot and what’s on the way out? And
then we must answer the important question: What are publishers
looking for? The great thing is, if you ask, they’ll tell you.
In this age of instant communication and specialized search techniques,
there are still writers who write first and then try to find a “home
for their babies.” That kind of practice shows very little purpose,
and has a low success rate. With excellent tools like Funds for Writers,
market guides, publisher web sites, and the legitimate writing networks,
there really is no reason for not knowing what is happening in a given
writing area.
Now for the tough part. Sometimes getting to the purpose means
changing your plan. What if you want to be a novelist, but you have
a real talent for writing non-fiction and that’s what is in demand?
Do you stick with novels that collect dust on your hard drive, or
go with what is successful?
That depends on whether your purpose is to be a writer, or just to
write something.
