I had the most fun at the Bayou Writers Conference in Lake Charles, LA.
Met some very wise presenters who humbled me in many ways, not to mention
had fun debating with Brooks Sherman of FinePrint Literary Agency about
the pros and cons of literary agents. These attendees were from LA and
TX primarily, and let me tell you . . . it was a room full of energetic,
happy, down-home, enjoyable folks. Thanks for the hospitality, y'all.

EDITOR'S THOUGHTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BUT I LIKE WHAT I DO...
Not long ago I spoke to a group of readers and writers in a
library. Nobody was published other than one lady who had
self-published children's books. She was a genuinely sweet
soul I could easily wrap up, tuck in my purse, and take home
with me, so I could have more of that sweetness later.
The room was talking about publishing, writing, mysteries,
earning a living writing . . . a hodge-podge of topics.
The subject came up of how many sales were necessary as a
self-pubbed author in order to justify tapping on the door
of agents or editors. Disappointment always runs around the
room when I speak about how many thousands of sales are needed--
especially to writers who fight to sell a hundred.
And out of the hubbub and mumblings, as people were fighting
what they heard, trying to justify their existence, fussy that
publishing was as hard as it is, this little lady spoke up.
"But I like what I do. Just selling the books I do."
People turned to listen. After all, how many people today
are happy with their lot in life? This was a message they
wanted to hear.
"I like selling my little books," she said. "I sell a few
copies here and there, donating them to libraries. I'm not
trying to become a national bestseller. I'm doing what's fun
for me."
That was such a moment for me. Heck, it made me wonder what
in the world I was doing as a writer. Was I still doing what
I liked to do? Had I morphed into a competitive machine like
thousands of others . . . following a routine beat of another
drummer instead of my own?
You do not have sell ten thousand copies of a book to
love what you do.
You do not have to travel the countryside speaking to
love what you do.
You do not have to be a full-time writer to love what you do.
Don't get lost in the noise of publishing. It's better
to get lost in the quiet of writing. My best guess is that's
what you love to do.
LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....
Clark lives in South Carolina, has a degree in agriculture, has
worked with the USDA for 25 years, and is married to a former
federal agent. This information appears on the novel’s back cover.
By the time readers finish the novel and find out the worst that
can possibly happen, they will have discovered that Clark also
knows the territory of deftly plotted fiction, realistic dialogue
and place settings, and how to tell a story that burns like a stiff
drink with a touch of sugar.
SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hi Hope,

Just wanted to send a note of thanks. Last November you had
an ad on your newsletter for Soul Mate Publishing. Having
faced previous rejections for my work which is a crossover
between Romance and Sci Fi, I was pleased to see there was a
publisher who looked for just that type of material. I submitted
my pitch and after an exciting year of edits, my debut novel,
The Fog, debuted as an E-Book in October on Amazon, Barnes &
Noble and at soulmatepublishing.com

Thank you for your wonderful newsletter. I look forward to
reading it every Friday!

ARTICLE

How to Win at What You Love
By Christy George

I’ve always majored in the “make lemonade” school of surviving hard
knocks, with a minor in “follow your bliss,” so after I was laid
off from my job producing special projects for a local public radio
station, I decided to go for it – writing books.

A friend who’d heard my last big radio project – a series of three
half-hours about climate change – told me I should turn it into a
nonfiction book. In fact, I’d been working on a novel for about two
years - very slowly - but the idea of doing a nonfiction book was new.

The day after my last day at work I attended a local writing
conference, pitched my concept to three agents, and used their
feedback to reshape my idea. And I discovered an amazing array of
possibilities on the web for grants, fellowships and residencies:

-Poets and Writers:
http://www.pw.org/toolsforwriters

-Mira’s List:
http://www.miraslist.com/

- Alliance of Artists Communities
http://www.artistcommunities.org/

-Res Artis:
http://www.resartis.org/en/

-Writers & Editors:
http://www.writersandeditors.com/awards__grants__fellowships_57698.htm

But it wasn’t until I found Hope Clark’s newsletters that her
positive energy inspired me to start applying.

My book is set in the eight states where I’ve lived, so I’ll need
to travel back to each of them. I was born in Michigan, where I
found ISLAND’s Hill House artist residency -
http://artmeetsearth.org/artistresidency.html - which has an
environmental focus that’s a great fit for my project. Still, I
was amazed to be accepted on my first try.

Next, I applied for a grant from my local arts agency, the Regional
Arts & Culture Consortium - http://racc.org . The proposal was
daunting – everything from drawing up a budget to planning for a
public event, so I went to RACC’s Open House and took advantage of
the agency’s offer to review grant proposals turned in a couple of
weeks early. I got terrific input, and had time to strengthen my
application enough that I was awarded $5,000, some of which will
fund a travel blog.

So far, so good. My “platform” as an environmental journalist, and
years of writing on deadline doubtlessly helped me submit polished
applications. But could I make the leap to winning funding on the
basis of my fiction?

This year, I took the plunge – and was accepted as a Hawthorne
Fellow at The Attic Institute in Portland. It’s not free, but it’s
competitive. I was also accepted to the Tin House writing conference,
and won another residency -
http://springcreek.oregonstate.edu/residencies.html- where I’ll go
to write up what I learn doing my RACC funded research.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

-target your proposal to funders and residencies that mesh with your project;

-start with agencies that are local, or at least local to the setting
of your book;

-apply for the least attractive times

-do your homework;

-take any coaching you’re offered;

-be willing to invest some money in yourself;

-find a day job while you’re writing.

I admit I’ve been lucky. After my layoff, I was offered a chance
to produce television projects on a contract basis. When I’m at
leisure (unemployed), I look for work and collect unemployment.
And I write on two books!

BIO
Christy George is fascinated by how the places we live shape our
identity. She’s covered climate change and the environment for
public radio & TV for 15 years. The genesis of her book project
“Vanishing Hometowns” was her award-winning radio series “The
Denmark Project” about the impact of climate change on one tiny
Oregon town – http://news.opb.org/denmark/ She’s writing her
first novel in Portland author Tom Spanbauer’s “Dangerous Writing”
workshop.
