NOT SO SCARY ONCE YOU DO IT

This week several readers have given me pause, making me
remember from whence I came and what I've learned. We read
the blogs and newsletters from people who seem to be way over
our heads in power, ability and talent, and too often we
discount our own abilities.

In mentioning the recent rash of face-to-face interviews
I've done lately (Skype and in-person), someone commented
about how scary that was.

As I'm writing this, I'm nervous about a 20-minute talk I'm
giving this evening to a MENSA chapter in Columbia, SC. These
folks are often accomplished with pretty decent levels of
intellect. Here I am, coming off 15 appearances, yet I'm a bit
ill-at-ease about this one. Instead of being too afraid to
accept, however, I had to make fun and remind myself, as Will
Smith said in the movie Men in Black, "First off, you chose me,
so you recognize the skills..."

In another situation, where I taught about entering contests
and recognizing the scams, half the readers seemed afraid if
not angry about contests, believing they were all scams. He
was sure that if a contest charged a fee, they were opportunists
at our expense.

I reminded him that all publishers were in the business to make
a buck, and all of them charged: some in advance, some after sales.
In traditional or self-publishing circles, the publishers aren't
all that charitable, doing what they do for the sake of God
or humanity. Plus contests are such opportunities.

And on Facebook, someone fussed about editors and how they are
evil minions intent on changing our stories to their own. He was
concerned that editors would overstep their bounds and rewrite
the content, not just make corrections. I reminded him that
writers pick and choose what's edited. Even with traditional
publishers that want manuscripts changed before agreeing to
publish, you can negotiate. I did.

The underlying theme in all of these concerns and complaints
is that of fear. Fear someone will make fun. Fear someone will
steal our work or our money. Fear someone will take advantage
of our deep-seeded, emotional urge to publish. We're pouring
our souls into print, and the last thing we need in the midst
of our trepidation is someone who also robs us of money,
rights or self-esteem.

Do . . . it . . . once.

Do an interview in person.
Speak to a small group.
Enter a contest.
Let an editor lay hands on your work.

What's the worst that can happen? The interview goes badly?
The host wants a good interview more than you do, trust me.
The speech goes awry? You learn from it. The audience got
no satisfaction from your trip-up. They were up their with you.
So you lose the contest. So the editor doesn't like your writing.

You decide if you walk away unscathed. Not them.

YOU SAID IT!!!

THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....

Hope Clark, the wit and wisdom behind the highly acclaimed site
"Funds For Writers," gives us an earthy glimpse into what we
all thought was a mundane world of government forms and livestock
management. Pulling from her personal stint in an identical job,
Ms. Clark brings an eclectic mix of characters into full,
believable focus, and delivers a lush image of the sultry
Lowcountry landscape, where people hide secrets that are as thick
as flies at a Fourth of July picnic.

Lowcountry Bribe is a deliciously well-crafted suspense that
should not be missed.

Protecting Your Writer’s income
(How to Prevent Getting Burned From Bait and Switch
Practices on Job Boards)

By Jennifer Brown Banks

Most savvy writers have honed their B.S. detectors to discern
potential scams on popular bulletin boards listing creative jobs.
Through some trial and error, lost wages, and lost pride, many
have developed sleuthing skills that would rival Sherlock Holmes.

But, not everyone is well versed on the subtle and increasingly
common practice of bait and switch. These tactics can ultimately
undermine and cheat even veteran writers out of money and valuable
time, causing many to yield a very low R.O.I. (return on
investment), particularly when it comes to blogging for pay.

But before I address needed caveats, here‘s the background that
inspired this article:

How I became a SMART writer through dumb luck . . .

The online ad read: “Write what you like. No restrictions on
number of posts you can produce, or the topics. As long as it
relates to entrepreneurial life. We will PayPal you weekly.”

It seemed like the job from heaven. Who wouldn’t be geeked
about this kind of gig? Fast forward. Not even 24 hours after
applying, I got a confirmation email of acceptance along with
instructions. The last time I was this stoked, I could fit
into my skinny jeans. But, about ten days into my “dream job”
things started to become a nightmare.

The rules and requirements had significantly changed.

First off, the publisher contacted me stating the word count
had changed. A few days later, there was a follow-up with an
additional request: each post should have 2 links and a stock
image. Shortly thereafter, I got news he would only be accepting
two articles per week, because they were “backed up” and had
to limit each writer‘s contributions.

It was clear that too many revisions were being made to our
former agreement for this to be unplanned. It was a classic
case of bait and switch.

A month before, in a separate, similar incident, I applied
for a blog job on personal finances and frugal living. The ad
stated “compensation commensurate with experience.” Regretfully,
after my first flawless submission, I discovered it was really a
per-click position. I pink-slipped this job immediately.

Knowledge is power.

Here are key things to consider that provide greater protection
against bait and switch and protect future earnings:

1. Recognize there is great truth to the adage, “If it seems
too good to be true, it is.” For example, if a blog job
promises $200 for a 500-word article, proceed with caution.
Though freelance rates vary, standard rates often apply.
Higher than normal compensation typically requires additional
responsibilities like research, providing photos, knowledge
of content management systems, SEO and other skills that might
not be disclosed initially.

2. Always retain as many rights as possible. This helps to
work smarter, not harder. Which means, even if your work is
ultimately published for less than its worth, you can still
resell without any additional effort or copyright infringement.

3. Be selective about where you search for online work. There
are hundreds of “ hiring freelancers” ads hosted at countless
sites. Not all are legitimate or profitable. Stick with sites
and job boards that have a good reputation like ProBlogger,
Women on Writing, and Journalismjobs.com, to name a few.

4. Though having terms in writing affords some degree of legal
protection, remember the best defense is common sense and good
judgment. The more you know, the less vulnerable you are.

Online jobs offer great opportunities for today’s writer to
connect with influential people, increase exposure and their
bottom line. For optimal results, follow these timely tips,
and choose wisely.
