One of the best perks of going to a conference . . . meeting
a long-time FundsforWriters reader. Marylane Koch came down
from Memphis to see me in Jackson, Mississippi last weekend.
She not only has followed FFW for years, but she won a contest
posted in FFW that paid $5,000. Now THAT'S a success story.

BEEN TO A GOOD CONFERENCE LATELY?

Just drove back from Jackson, Mississippi where I was the
opening motivational speaker and one of the instructors for
the 2012 Mississippi Writer's Guild Annual Conference. It
wasn't a huge conference by any means, but I've come to
enjoy the smaller conferences. I don't want to say they are
better than the larger conferences because each size and
type conference has something unique to offer, but I have
a warm and fuzzy love for those where I can come to know
almost everybody there!

I have one more conference to attend this year, and it's
in Nashville, Tennessee. KILLER NASHVILLE. Yep, a mystery
conference, and I'm nervous about it. Why? Because this
event is centered around my new genre -- mystery.

I'll be hanging around with mystery writers and fans. I still
hesitate when I call myself a mystery author. But I've been
assured by a couple of people who've already been to this
conference in the past, that I'll fit right in. So I'm
diving in, folks. I'll be there with bells on, with hubby in
tow to take pics for those of you who aren't there.

What? You might make it? That's what I want to hear! I'd love
to meet some FundsforWriters readers there. In a sea of
strangers, I'll have friends who know me! Here's a little
bit about it. There will even be cop- and agent-type folks there,
so you can pick their brains for crime and forensic ideas!

Killer Nashville
A Conference for Thriller, Suspense, Mystery Writers
& Literature Lovers
August 23-26, 2012
Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon

Killer Nashville 2012 has over 60 sessions, 3 guests of honor,
agent / editor / publisher roundtables, 7 distinct session tracks
(general writing, genre specific writing, publishing, publicity &
promotion, forensics, screenwriting, and sessions for fans), 11
breakout sessions for intense study, special sessions on grants
for writers, synopsis & query writing, manuscript critiques
(fiction, nonfiction, short story, screenplay, marketing, query),
a realistic mock crime scene for you to solve, networking with
bestselling authors, agents, editors, publishers, attorneys,
publicists, representatives from law and emergency services,
mystery bingo, authors' bar, wine tasting event, two cocktail
receptions, guest of honor dinner and awards program, prizes,
free giveaways, free book signings, and more!

Wow . . . that's like Disneyland for Mystery Writers!

Go to http://www.killernashville.com/  and sign up for a little or
a lot, and be sure to find me. Tell me you signed up after seeing
it here, and I'll give you TOTAL FundsforWriters free for a year.

Please come!

NEW PODCAST OUT!

WorkStew is a unique site and tastefully done. Per their site,
"The Work Stew podcast is a forum for frank talk about what
people do for a living." The host Kate Walton recently
interviewed me and took the conversation into a completely
different slant than normal.

"In this episode featuring author C. Hope Clark, I learned
that the work Ms. Clark is doing these days—penning mysteries
and mentoring other writers—follows a decades-long career with
the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In fact, Ms. Clark managed
to take the darkest days of her time as a government employee—
when a bribery attempt turned her life upside down—and convert
that ordeal into page-turning fiction."

It's a tad over 11 minutes long, so it's brief. Enjoy!

YOU SAID IT!!!

THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....

By E. Kanell "BethMystery" (Vermont)

Carolina Slade has to be one of the best sleuths to arrive this
year. I devoured Lowcountry Bribe while on a takes-you-forever
journey that involved airplanes, airports, a bus ... and felt
like I got home in no time at all. Realistic characterization
is the key: Slade shows a perfect balance of skill, strength,
doubt, fear, and determination. And all the farm details rang
true (it's so important to not be distracted!) -- many thanks
to Clark for never interrupting the flow of the story but
enriching it in each barnyard, on each highway, and in each
quandary. A must-read mystery, and the start of what I hope will
be a long and well-read series.

Hope...it happened and you helped! I have been offered a three-

coming out in March!!!! Can you believe that! I am so shocked.
I was a member of FundsforWriters one year exactly when I got

for me. I couldn't have found this publisher without you!

Working Title is The Kindling. Thanks again! Without

Become a Blogger-for-Hire

By Steff Green

With over 2 million blog posts published every day, it's clear
blogging is still a powerful Internet force. You know how
important it is to promote your own writing business with a
blog, but did you also know it's possible to earn money by
writing blogs for other businesses?

Benefits of Paid Blogging

Aside from paying the bills, paid blogging offers many benefits
for writers. Most freelance bloggers receive links and exposure
for their own website from their clients, and can even promote
their own books.

Since blogs are posted quickly, paid blogging is a great way of
building up a huge catalogue of articles, helping you to brand
yourself as an expert in a particular niche.

Paid blogging also offers you a regular income. Most blogging
jobs require you to submit the same number of posts every month.
Having this regular work can provide writers with much needed
stability.

And, although you can't normally republish content you've
written in blogs, you can reuse the ideas and sources to pitch
more in-depth articles to print magazines, thus earning you even
more income.

Getting Your First Paid Blogging Job

JOB BOARDS

I got my first paid blogging job by answering a Craigslist ad I
saw on a job board. There are lots of different job boards online
that advertise paid blogging jobs – the trick is to weed out the
decent jobs and pitch ideas as you'd pitch any editor.

Here are some job boards for blogging jobs:

http://jobs.problogger.net
Problogger Job Board – the job board for the popular Problogger website.

http://bloggingpro.com/jobs
Blogging Pro Job Board – similar to Problogger.

http://freelancewritinggigs.com
Freelance Writing Jobs – aggregate listing of all types of writing
jobs, including blogging.

http://jobs.freelanceswitch.com
Freelance Switch – all types of freelancing jobs, including blogging.

And, of course, the lovely Hope sometimes posts paid blogging
opportunities in her newsletters.

COMPETITIONS

A disability blog hosted a blogging competition, which I won.
Not only did I get a £250 prize, they asked if I'd be interested
in coming on board as a regular writer. I answered with a
resounding yes! You can often find blogging competitions listed
on job boards or writing forums.

PITCHING BLOGS DIRECTLY

I landed another client by writing to the editor of a blog I
love and pitching an idea for a column. They weren't looking
for writers at that time, but she loved my idea so much she
found the budget to hire me.

If you guest post regularly on a blog, ask the editor if they'd
ever thought of hiring you to produce regular monthly content.
If you're a confident blogger, you could even approach local
business owners about creating a blog to promote their business.

WRITING YOUR POSTS

Blogs have distinct features that distinguish them from other
types of writing. A blog post needs to be easily skimmable to
web browsers – this means using short paragraphs, headings and
subheadings, and bulleted lists. Learn from expert bloggers on
Problogger.net and bloggingpro.com and you'll soon pick up the
tricks.

To be a successful blogger-for-hire, you should also know about
using keyboards and SEO, backlinks and anchor text, affiliate
links, content management and blogging platforms, and sourcing
and adding images to your posts.

PAYMENT

Most blogs don't pay as much as magazines, but that doesn't
mean you can't earn good money. I'm paid between $20-$100 per
500-800 word blog, and I write 2-3 blogs per hour. Payment
arrives weekly or monthly via PayPal.

Blogging for hire can be a great way for you to add regular
writing income and expand your online presence. What will
you blog about?
