Love outdoor pictures, don't you? I'm leaning on a 100-year-old
oak on the coast. This is one of several limbs that sweep out
across the property. The trunk is probably five feet in radius.
Just phenomenal when you think about it.

DO YOU KNOW A GREAT WRITER IN BOSTON WHO'D LIKE A JOB?
-or-
WHY DO WRITERS AVOID NINE-TO-FIVE JOBS?
A few weeks ago, I posted this job. I know the lady who asked
me to post this, and I thought for sure someone would come
forward for the position. She only heard from one person.
ONLINE MARKETING MANAGER
Location Boston, MA
Contact D Rodgers at Aquent, 617-535-4516,
drodgers@aquent.com
---
Our consulting company client is looking for a strong writer with
social media development experience. Execution of content in
various formats, including web copy, social media posts, blogs,
online contents, interactive graphics, videos, podcasts, webinars
and email communications. Develop organic growth through the
creation of content, enabling links and cross-links to relevant
audiences and communities. The position is potentially highly
rewarding: $100,000 +/- base salary, guaranteed bonus, benefits,
opportunity to develop great community following within an elite
professional services environment.
I scratched my head, wondering why someone wouldn't want such
a position? They are willing to train the individual. They just
ask that the person be a good writer and have a social media
touch. Great opportunity!
Then I thought simpler, more elementary. After just completing a
serious round of conferences and appearances, after analyzing
the questions I received when people had me face-to-face, I
answered myself.
1. Many people write, but aren't confident with their social
networking skills. What's good? What's average? I belong to
Blogger, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, WordPress, Goodreads,
and manage newsletters. Yet, I'd wonder about my capability
to perform a nine-to-five job with my experience.
2. Some think that writing/social media jobs are for young
people. After all, they do this stuff in their sleep, right?
They've trained since birth.
3. We write in our safe homes, behind closed doors, but is our
writing good enough to justify a full-time job for an employer?
Are we talented or not? After all, we've only worked for
ourselves. What if we embarrass ourselves in the position?
4. We've been reclusive as freelancers, hobbyists, or whatever
you call write-when-we-want-to. The thought of having to
produce eight hours a day is scary. At home we write when
the muse dances and sings. In an office, we write all the time,
regardless of our temperament.
Most of the readers I hear from speak at some point about
struggling to make ends meet as writers. They do not, however,
see themselves as professionals. They feel more like scrappers,
self-taught blood-sweat-and-tears folks. We tentatively take
the title seriously. Working for someone as a writer, however,
is downright frightening as whimsy becomes reality.
There's also the line we cross: when we become pretty darn good
at social media and make a little bit of money. Why give up the
freedom of self-employment for a cubicle? I'll tell you why:
1. Regular paycheck.
2. Insurance benefits.
3. Possible retirement option.
4. Connectivity with people.
5. Fantastic experience.
6. Financial support for your after-hours freelancing.
Jobs are not four-letter words. They are opportunities. Whether
you work full-time or part-time, for six-months, or to retirement,
a writing job might be the thing to shake up your writing
persona . . . and make it take shape . . . and make money.

YOU SAID IT!!!
THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....
It's rare for me to give any book a 5 star rating but what
else could I do, given that I sat down, started reading, and
didn't get up again until I'd finished! Well, ok, I got up
once to refill my water glass and go to the loo, but then I
dashed straight back. The rarity of a hotel room and no
distractions helped, but the fact that it was an incredible
read was far more important. The opening paragraph alone
should be sent to all aspiring writers as an example of the
perfect hook.
Great characters. A fabulous sense of place. And enough
twists that I didn't put it all together until it was
revealed.
An excellent debut novel and I'm looking forward to the next.

WORDS OF SUCCESS
To view your life as blessed
does not require you to deny your pain.
It simply demands a more complicated vision,
one in which a condition or event
is not either good or bad but is, rather,
both good and bad, not sequentially, but simultaneously.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’s testimony to your highly informative – and productive – newsletter
“Funds for Writers.”
In 2008, I noticed a post for a grant from The Elizabeth
George Foundation. The Foundation would send a writer to a
writing conference of choice upon fulfillment of submission
requirements. I received airfare and conference monies to
attend Robert (“Dick”) Vaughan’s “Write on the Beach,” held
every spring in Gulf Shores, AL.
I spent one glorious week writing at least five hours a day
then gathering around the dining room table for three delicious,
homemade meals a day with Dick and his lovely wife, Ruthie, as
well as three other writers. We talked about writing and life.
(Aren’t they one and the same?)
In that one week I had written several critical chapters (the
middle of the book, always the toughest) as well as a synopsis
and query letter, all of which were personally reviewed by Dick
who offered a lifetime of experience in writing and publishing.
Now, if that were not enough, when I had finished the book, I
hired Richard Krawiec who advertises his editorial service in
your newsletter. That was money well spent. Although I could
only afford the first 30 pages, Richard’s expert advice helped
me see tangents in other sections as well.
And now, the icing on the cake: my debut novel – twice a child
– is available from
www.sunburypress.com as a new release, as
well as available on Amazon. It is downloadable on Kindle and
Nook.
Thank you, Hope, for this invaluable newsletter and all the
goodies you bring to us every week. Good luck on your novel!
Sincerely,
Ann Elia Stewart
GETTING THE BIGGEST BANG FOR YOUR BOOK-TOUR BUCK
by Erika Dreifus
My short-story collection, QUIET AMERICANS, was published by
a small press that didn't (and still doesn't) have a budget
to send its authors on tours. This means that since the book’s
release last year, most of my promotional efforts have taken
place online. Moreover, I have worked hard to maximize my few,
self-arranged travels, aiming for the biggest “bang” for each
travel-related “buck” by arranging multiple appearances and
events in each location.
Some of this has depended on the assistance of generous friends
and family in my destination locations. For instance, I’ve been
lucky that these kindly connections respond to my promises of
everlasting gratitude if they host book parties for me. (So far,
my book and I have been the guests of honor in three cities.)
But I’ve done more than drop vigorous hints to people predisposed
to respond favorably to them. Consider my trip to Washington for
a writers’ conference. I didn’t stop with the two panels and one
book-signing that were scheduled for the conference site. One of
the stories in my book is inspired by the U.S. Army experiences
of my paternal grandfather, who was born a German Jew, so once
my conference commitments were finalized, I emailed the National
Museum of American Jewish Military History. My initial exchange
with a museum administrator led to a wonderful reading and
discussion on site on the last day of my trip (and subsequent
book sales via the museum’s shop).
More recently, after my application to participate in the
Virginia Festival of the Book was accepted, and I learned
exactly where and when my festival panel would take place,
I tried to think creatively of ways I might meet still more
readers in Charlottesville, a place where I didn't know a soul.
An article in THE WRITER magazine introduced me to WriterHouse,
Charlottesville’s thriving writing center. A few emails and one
phone conversation later, I had a contract to teach a freelancing
seminar there during my stay. Then, since my book features
Jewish themes and characters even beyond the story inspired
by my grandfather’s Army service, I reached out as well to the
local synagogue, where I was invited to give a presentation
(and sell a few books).
Of course, much of this success depends on the goodwill of
others. But without thinking more broadly about opportunities
that might cluster in each location, and without doing some
initial research and outreach, none of it can happen. I’ve done
it. You can, too.
