NEGATIVE REVIEWS

Okay, let's talk about this. I've been watching people run
rampant across the web, in various writers groups, talking
about negative reviews.

Yes, they are devastating to writers.

Yes, they can make you mad and crave to strike back.

You will never please every reader. Someone will eventually
think you are absolutely stupid for what you wrote. Your
characters were two-dimensional. The plot never made a valid
point. The setting was mundane. The red herrings were too
obvious. The romance too cheezy . . . predictable, shallow,
poorly written, etc.

And yes, these people have a right to leave a review. You chose
to present your work to the public. Do you think nobody will
have an opinion on it? Of course you want four- and five-star
reviews.

Maybe they made a mistake in the review, like saying your
setting was New Hampshire instead of Vermont. Maybe they thought
it was a mystery when it was a romance. Maybe they prefer
literary and got a commercial sci-fi, and are frustrated they
wasted their time. They may have confused the title to mean
one topic, then the book took off in another direction.

But even if they did not read the entire book, they are entitled
to an opinion.

There are horror stories abounding these days, where naysaying
groups are banding together to bash bad writing by authors. Others
unite to bash bad reviewers. Both sides descend upon the web to
search and destroy. Authors get hurt. Reviewers get hurt.

Let's just stop here and say that we should treat each other
with respect. I have a few iffy reviews. No, I did not chastise
them, just as I hope nobody would chastise me for any review
I left.

Let's try to be professional. Let's try not to toss comments
out there anonymously. Let's struggle to post our best work
and leave our best reviews. And let's hold our tongues if we
don't like what someone else has said. It's so tempting to
throw out too-quick remarks on the Web.

Publishing and writing is difficult enough as it is without
us fueling the fire of negative commentary.

But . . . we do owe authors the courtesy of a review. No, I'm
not pandering for reviews. I've been as negligent as anyone
in reading a book and moving on. Now, I try to make a point
to pick my stars and leave comments at Amazon or Goodreads,
if for no other reason than to thank the author for spending
so much time and effort to put yet another book out there for
the reading public.

YOU SAID IT!!!

THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....

“From stories that he made into movies, Alfred Hitchcock taught
us to fear the most mundane settings: the quiet Midwestern
cornfield (North by Northwest), the happy-go-lucky amusement
park (Strangers on a Train), and the idyllic small California
town where seemingly nothing evil ever happens (Shadow of a Doubt,
The Birds
). With her first novel, Lowcountry Bribe, Hope Clark has
added the South Carolina Lowcountry as one more deceptive geographic
landmark where, hiding beneath its natural beauty and unique
cultural history, there are the septic sores of corruption and
murder most foul. If Mr. Hitchcock was still with us, it would
probably be safe to say, beyond a Shadow of a Doubt that he would
have loved Ms. Clark’s ride through the Lowcountry.”

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
I wish to thank you for your article “The Beauty of a Website.”
At the time it appeared in the March 2, 2012 issue of Funds for
Writers, I was researching website designers for my book. So,
with great interest, I read these comments about Shaila
Abdullah and her company, House of Design: “Shaila was game for
everything and anything I wanted. But she had the professional
savvy to lead me to some ideas I never thought about.”
I visited her websites. I was very impressed. I called her and
the fifteen minute conversation we shared confirmed your remarks
about her and convinced me she was the designer I needed. She
sent me her questionnaire. The importance of answering it in as
much detail as possible cannot be understated.
Working with her to create the website was an absolute joy.
Shaila’s creative ability is unbounded. Give her the seeds of
some ideas and she will grow your words into a magnificent garden
of visual imagery. Once the basic colors for my site had been
determined, I gave her a list of some of the images from my book
and asked if she could find a way to use them on the site. I was
blown away by the creativity and originality of her work. She
had employed even the simple image of red poppies with subtlety
and style. As you know, Shaila works with you every step of the
way and, for those individuals who are detail-oriented, like me,
she has the patience of Job.
In folklore, dream catchers intercept bad dreams and allow only
good ones to reach the dreamer. If there are writers in your
audience dreaming of what a great website for their book might
look like, Shaila Abdullah and the House of Design should be
their dream catcher. http://myhouseofdesign.com/
Thank you for leading me to her with that great article (one
among many, I might add).
Regards,
John L. Holgerson
Jack of All Trades:
Seven Ways to Develop Multiple Streams of Income from Your Writing
By Mina R Raulston
Jack of all trades, master of none, that’s how my dad described
himself. In my regular day job I found that useful as I worked
multiple jobs to support my family. I learned that a jack-of-all-
trades may not have a high high-powered career but he or she will
always be employable. That lesson proved invaluable as I developed
my writing income. What began as journaling for my own peace of
mind after my divorce eventually became a second income. Here are
some simple ways to develop multiple streams of writing income.
If you’re a brand new writer and have no clips, try writing for
your church or other community organization. My first experience
was writing a Bible study that I subsequently taught at my church.
Query a local, specialized newspaper, even if it’s unpaid to start.
You will gain training and experience as well as published clips.
I wrote for a local Christian newspaper, writing articles about
domestic violence, groups, events, and people of importance to
the Christian community and I learned how to research and interview.
Submit queries to your church’s publications. I publish articles
in my denomination’s magazines on domestic violence, parenting,
summer camp, and church events.
Approach the smaller community newspapers in your area. I have
written for several community newspapers, both as a full time
staff writer and as a freelance writer publishing articles on
community meetings, events, and parenting. One article, titled
“Children and the Arts, How to Light the Fire and Fan the Flame,”
was a blast to write. It’s best to create ideas of your own for
articles but you may receive assignments. Look for business or
other niche newspapers in your area too. I wrote business owner
profiles for one local newspaper.
Write a nonfiction book on a subject you know well. I wrote a
nonfiction book on domestic violence that I self-published.
There are many options available today for self-publishing that
offer authors much flexibility. I prepared the manuscript and a
very talented artist friend created the cover art for me. One of
my publishers referred me to a book packager http://www.bookmasters.com
to print and package my books, and a graphic designer to convert
my cover format and cover art into a book cover file. I sell copies
of my books from my website http://www.minaraulston.com  , our church
bookstore, and when I teach.
Write book reviews and speeches and offer services to other writers.
Book reviews can be done for newspapers, magazines, and even publishers.
I regularly write speeches for a company called First Editing at
http://www.firstediting.com  . And every writer needs an editor, so
I offer proofreading and editing services to writers and students.
Teach what you know. After leading two writers’ groups I now teach
a variety of writing classes at several community adult education
departments. I also offer domestic violence awareness seminars for
a speaker’s fee.
Over the years, I’ve learned how to query, how to promote myself,
how to develop a network of sources, and how to find and create new
opportunities. Not only has it developed into a second income, but
it has done wonders for my self-confidence. These are just a few
tips for developing multiple streams of income from your writing.
You may discover others as you develop your writing and career.
Keep your eyes and mind open and watch for opportunities.
