RANDOMNESS
Nathan Bransford wrote recently about the randomness of bestsellers.
In other words, there isn't some magical power that preordains
the qualities of a story that breaks records and defies the
odds. Sometimes a perfect storm just comes together. Like the
megawaves he describes at sea, the ones that appear from nowhere
and make a huge impression in that vast, monstrous water, they
just happen and can't be forecasted.
http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2012/06/randomness-of-bestsellers.html
And yet, we keep trying to understand the process. What's worse,
in my opinion, and this is a BIG gripe with me, is that we also
bash traditional publishers for producing books that do not
do well. That's talking out of both sides of our mouths.
We try to think we can duplicate bestseller status, and really
learn how to define the path to such a level, as if there
was a manual somewhere. That logic should also mean that if
we can predict great books, then we know enough to avoid a
bad one.
The deal is, people, is that we can only write our best.
Publishers can only attempt to predict what will sell.
Readers can only pretend to recognize a debut book as a
bestseller.
The fact is that nobody has mastered how to make a bestseller.
There is no "HOW TO WRITE A BESTSELLER FOR DUMMIES."
Just spoke to someone this week who justified self-publishing
by saying that he's read bad books by traditional publishers.
He's only trying to assuage his own conscience, the one
that's attempting to rationalize into a hazy reality that
he probably has no chance with traditional publishing. So
he says they've lost touch, can no longer produce quality
material, thus leaving him no choice but to proceed with
self-publishing since it has equal credibility.
This is my reality . . . and my explanation of publishing:
The more seasoned, experienced people who lay their eyes
and hands on your manuscript, the better the book.
Note, I did not say traditional or self-published. Multiple
layers of review and decision making goes into traditional
publishing. If you self-publish, make sure you put the
same degree of attention into your manuscript as a traditional
publishing house would put into it. Hire editors. Hire a
cover designer. Hire a formatter. That is, unless you are
experienced yourself. That doesn't mean read instructions
and learn as you go. Sure, you CAN learn as you go, but
do not go it alone. You'll never see the landmines, no
matter how many blog posts you read about the business.
This business isn't about randomness. It's about diligence
and focus to detail. Nothing is fool-proof. Failure exists.
Less than satisfactory happens. But your odds improve the
more experience you put into your book's development, writing,
and promotion.
Instead of trying to orchestrate a bestseller, just write
your best. Then recognize what you should and should not do.
Be daring in your writing. Be grounded in your publishing,
no matter which route you take.
Hope

ANOTHER KICKSTARTER WRITER ASKS FOR HELP
Waiting To Be Tina (ages 9-12)
Middle grade is such an important time in children's lives.
In their transition from innocence to the demands of young
adulthood, they need every laugh, insight, and encouragement
possible. And while Waiting To Be Tina is first and foremost
a fun read, it also supports 9-12 year olds' budding independence,
cultural awareness, humor, love of nature, and precious sense of
fair play.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
I learned of Brandon Monk's
readlearnwrite.com in your newsletter.
After reading your own insightful post there, I've been following
Brandon's blog with interest. His goal of encouraging reading
throughout the population is an important one, and his blog has
been thought-provoking and interesting, leading to some lively
discussion. In the same vein, I recently volunteered to distribute
books in a national project aimed at sharing the love of reading
with light and non-readers. I queried Brandon, and he promptly and
graciously accepted my proposal to write a guest post about my
experience. The result was "Creating Readers, One Book at a Time:
World Book Night 2012," which was published on
readlearnwrite.com
on April 25, 2012.
Thank you, Hope, for producing the consistently helpful and high
quality FundsforWriters. You've generously shared insights based
on your own experiences, provided listings of paying markets, and
directed your readers to other relevant websites. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Francine Garson
Indie Publishing: A New World for Readers, Opportunity for Writers
By Peggy Williams
Are Americans reading less? Bookstores are closing and
publishing companies are shrinking and collapsing.
Paradoxically, even with less access to traditional publishers
it turns out that writers are writing more than ever. And
they are selling more books than ever. They’re just not
necessarily selling them in print format. According to Time
magazine, e-book sales grew more than 1,200 percent since
2008. The world of the “indie” author has come of age.
The independently-published author is a unique breed. Thanks
to companies like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords,
writers do not have to pay to have their work published,
like the vanity publishing experience of old. They get paid.
And if the gods of the e-publishing world are with them,
they can get paid quite well.
Karen McQuestion, author of A Scattered Life, is a prime
example of how profitable indie publishing can be. After
trying for nearly a decade to get a publisher to pick up
her book, she finally decided in 2009 to give the new
Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) program a try. Her
e-book caught the attention of readers, who in turn gave
her good reviews, which caught the attention of a movie
producer who offered McQuestion an option. That caught
Amazon’s attention, and they offered her a contract for
a paper-back version of her book through their new Amazon
Encore imprint. Since then she has successfully published
several titles through Amazon KDP and was recently picked
up by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Amanda Hocking, the wildly popular author of several
paranormal romance novels for the young adult audience
followed a similar trajectory with her success. Hocking
wrote an astounding 17 novels before self-publishing them
as e-books. Within a year she had sold over a million
copies of nine of her titles. Hocking was eventually
picked up by St. Martin’s Press.
Obviously most authors won’t experience the levels of
success that McQuestion and Hocking did. But after spending
time in forums like Amazon’s KindleBoards and IndieExchange
on Facebook, two things have become evident. The first is
how many independent writers there are. The actual numbers
are a bit fuzzy, but Amazon reported in January of this year
that its Kindle Select library included 75,000 e-books.
And that speaks to the second observation--how prolific
indie writers are. Many of the authors on the KindleBoards
have six or more books to their name. This might not seem
like a lot compared to the Stephen Kings and Danielle Steels
of the world. But remember that indie writers, while they
are devoted to their craft and generally are very
professional, do not have publishing houses taking care
of their editing needs, their graphics, and the marketing
that is essential to success. As indies, they do it all.
Why are indie writers able to publish so prolifically?
Because there is an audience for their work. There are
readers who soak up and buy up, anything they can get their
hands on. Are the indies all great writers? Well, no. Of
course not. But likely the market will winnow out those not
worth reading, and move those, like McQuestion and Hocking
who are worth the read, to the top of the virtual slush
pile. In fact, eleven indies made it to the New York Times
bestseller list in 2011.
So are people in the U.S. really reading less? I’m going to
suggest that there has been a suppressed, insatiable desire
for good, inexpensive, accessible literature all along.
And that not only are Americans reading more than ever,
they are quite happy with independently published authors.
