WE AREN'T ALL BOOK WRITERS
BUT WE CAN ALL WRITE FOR MAGAZINES

I'm hot off the conference trail and come home armed with so
many ideas for these editorials. This one seemed to resonate
at all three appearances I made in Pennsylvania, Iowa, and
Oklahoma City. Writers sought ways to make money while penning
their dream projects, in most cases a book, but all they could
think about was writing about writing.

Tunnel vision.

If you have the prowess to write a book, you have the ability
to write articles. Articles that pay.

Immediately, writers think of Women's Day, Family Circle,
Smithsonian, Vogue and so on, crushed that they'd have to compete
against New York freelancers for a paying gig. Heck, this is
just more rejection, they fear.

If you need to bump up your income, start pitching:

1. Seek Your Regional Magazines

Parenting, business, entertainment, and community news publications
are easier to reach, pitch, and convince to use your work when
they know you are a home-grown resident.

2. Remember Your Trade Magazines

A trade magazine is published with the intention to target
its marketing to a specific industry or type of trade. Professions,
hobbies, industries, and entrepreneurs use trades. If you've
ever held a profession or seriously worked in a hobby, you
probably saw these publications and never thought twice about
them. Okay, now you can think twice. Use what you know to
pitch some cool ideas. You're experienced.

3. Interview Someone

I dare say over ninety percent of magazines, trades and
otherwise, include profiles/interviews in their pages. Pick
someone to interview, arm yourself with ten questions, and
create a colorful profile of someone in your area. Then
match it to a publication. -OR- Find a publication, then
look up seasoned, famous, or respected individual to
interview for it.

4. Remember Evergreen Topics

An evergreen topic is one that can be tweaked and reproduced
for a wide and diverse array of publications.

How to use a business card.
How to design a useful website.
How to use social media for your business.
How to interview potential employees.
How to manage difficult employees.
How to make the most of a convention or conference.
How to be professional online.
How to fit into your community.

Whether dealing with a bakery, real estate, plumbing, or
landscaping trade publication, you can make these topics
(and a zillion more) work for you.

Sell several articles a month. Start earning a living.
And guess what? You're also building a platform. You reach
more readers with an article in a weekend than you do with
your book in a year. Magazines can be a powerhouse in your
career. Give them a chance and they'll love you back ten fold.

YOU SAID IT!!!

THE LATEST COMMENT ABOUT LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE....

Hi Hope,

I just finished the book. LOVED IT! I realized my moods this
week depended on what Slade was going through at that point in
the book. I have never experienced that before with any other
book. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

I told anyone who would listen about your book and wrote a
review this afternoon on Amazon.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, Hope,
Your newsletter continues to be a gold mine of links to good
writing contests. As you may recall, I won an international
poetry competition in Strokestown, Ireland, in 2010, after
reading about it here, and a few months ago I entered the Spirit
First poetry contest in Washington DC, to which you also provided
a link. The contest drew entries from 37 states and 19 countries,
and I was fortunate enough to win First Prize, which includes $175
and publication in a collection of spiritual poetry they’ll publish
in the fall. Thank you so much for keeping us all on top of the
opportunities that are out there!
Writing For Small Independent Publishers
By Katriena Knights
Between the behemoth Big Six and the self-publishing path is
a plethora of other markets seeking quality fiction. Some small
indie publishers have even seen their authors rise to the top
of the New York Times, USA Today, and Kindle bestseller lists,
with books available in bookstores nationwide. Yet chatter in
the industry rarely discusses theses successes.
These smaller, independent publishers produce a wide range of genres
from nonfiction to science fiction to erotica. Many publish only in
electronic format, but many also produce paperback, hardback, and
audiobook versions. They tend to have less restrictive contracts,
higher royalties, and are more willing to take cross-genre,
experimental or hard to define works. They offer professional
editing, cover art, and many even provide regular promotion or
easy access to promotional outlets for their authors.
Advantages of Small Presses
While they usually cater to a niche market, small presses often
allow a great deal of freedom within that market. Also, indie
niche markets are often ones the bigger publishers don’t focus
on at all due to smaller readership. So if you have a difficult
to categorize book that combines urban fantasy, speculative
fiction and erotica, for example, a smaller publisher might
snap it up.
Many small presses pay royalties monthly, so you get your money
more quickly and more regularly than you might from a publisher
following a traditional model. Most pay royalties from 30% to 50%
on e-book sales—considerably higher than the Big Six publishers offer.
Disadvantages
Most small Indies don’t pay advances. Those that do generally offer
very small ones—a few hundred dollars rather than a few thousand.
However, this is often offset by the quicker turnaround on publication,
more prompt receipt of royalties (your first royalty check usually
comes within six weeks of publication), and, if the publisher is
electronic only, the absence of reserves against returns.
These presses are small. In many cases, you'll be looking at selling
hundreds of copies rather than thousands. But in most cases your
book will take off more quickly than if you self publish, because
a small press has a built-in group of loyal readers who will buy
anything the company publishes.
Breaking In
As with any publisher, lead with your best work. Indie pubs are not
in the business of buying that early piece that's been rejected by
everyone else because your skills weren't up to par when you wrote
it. I see far too many submissions from writers who haven't put in
the time to develop their craft. I think some writers assume smaller
publishers aren’t as picky about quality, which is not true.
Follow submission guidelines. These can include genre, word count, formatting, whether or not simultaneous submissions are allowed, and sometimes, specific requirements within the genre. Again, I see many submissions where the author obviously didn't take to time to read the guidelines and has sent material that doesn't fit the publisher's needs.
