My experience at selling Lowcountry Bribe . . . in a bar!
FundsforWriters reader Anna Metcalf and her friend Erin
were with a group celebrating Anna's engagement and asked
me to come by and sell them my mystery. Had a good time,
and I only had one drink . . promise.

SELLING BOOKS AT A BAR

Well, they served food, too, but The Whig was a tiny, barely-turn-
around, hidden-downstairs-in-a-basement type place, literally
across the street from the South Carolina State Capitol. Just by
happenstance, a FundsforWriters reader sent me a message on
Facebook asking if she could buy my book while she's visiting
SC. She said she could meet me somewhere, then jokingly said
she was having a post-engagement party at The Whig, and I could
always come to the event.

So I went to the event. Sold four books. Enjoyed a drink and
some very entertaining conversation. Offered to speak at one
gentleman's reading club once they finished discussing Truman
Capote. Got away from the computer and added a new place on my
let's-get-out-of-the-house list. Come to my town, and I'll try
to make contact. It's the polite thing to do.

Some things you learn when selling a book:

1. Have plenty of copies at hand. I carried five books in the
bar and had six in the car. I keep 100 books in my study,
to always be prepared.

2. Have change. Few books are an even $10 or $20. I keep $5 bills
available since the book is $15.

3. If you are paying sales tax for selling within your home
state, suck it up and keep the round number. The book is $14.95,
and sales tax is seven percent in SC. No, I'm not going to
charge $15.99.

4. Be prepared to handle plastic. www.squareup.com is remarkably
cheap and portable.

5. Bring someone to help. Hubby handles the money so I can focus
on signings and conversation. Just makes sense for me to
give my attention to the fabulous people I'm meeting.

6. Keep records.

7. Listen for another opportunity to appear.

Funny thing is, I sold more in a bar than I did at a bookstore
event that had been announced on radio and in newspapers. No, I
don't blame the bookstore. I credit the atmosphere. In a bar,
I'm more approachable in the eyes of many people. In a bookstore,
I'm THE AUTHOR.

At an informal event at my neighbor's home, we fixed snacks and
invited the neighborhood. I sold 20 books.

Later this month I'll attend an intimate little event at a sweet
lady's home in Pittsboro, North Carolina. She's limiting the
attendance to 25 people. We'll have finger foods and talk
Lowcountry Bribe. That's it! No PowerPoint or technical fireworks.
I'm taking 30 books, just in case.

It's so much more fun when you go with the flow!

Don't Forget the "Trades"

By Grace Elting Castle

Freelancers are missing a great opportunity in "the trades"---magazines
published for specific professions or occupations.

As editor of a trade publication, PI Magazine...the journal for
professional investigators, I often wonder, "Where are the writers?" We
publish six issues a year and scramble to fill the pages. Granted, we have
some regular contributors whose expertise, tailored to our needs, is
welcomed, particularly in business and marketing topics. But it's
difficult to find skilled freelancers who can find a topic, prepare
a query and follow up with a professional article.

The market is huge! There are 114 pages of trade publications in the 2012
Writer's Market. I suspect there are many more editors wishing for skilled
writers.

What you should know:

*Trade magazines are seldom found in bookstores. They are distributed,
often by subscription only, to people within an industry or profession.
*Most pay quite well, often per article rather than per word.

Tips for success:

*Carefully review the magazine for voice and subject matter.
*Carefully follow the writer's guidelines.
*Understand that most "trades" do not have a large editorial staff, so be patient.
*Write explicit queries.
*If, based on your promises in the query, an editor agrees to review your
article, deliver what you promised.
*Hone your research and interviewing skills.
*Don't use lengthy, seldom seen words to try to impress an editor.
*Stick to the listed word count.
*Write sparingly in the voice and style of the targeted publication.
*Be polite. In the past few months I have noticed a particular rudeness
creeping into the messages received from some writers. One asked for
guidelines and I sent him the URL so he could read them online. He
responded, "Just send me the damn guidelines!" Not a good way to endear
oneself to a potential purchaser of one's articles.

Most articles about freelancing emphasize studying the magazine and
guidelines. It's easy to skip that advice, but for the "trades" you're
wasting your time if you ignore those steps. It's a certain guarantee of
failure.

For example, I receive numerous submissions of investigator profiles. We
only publish profiles if a PI has made a significant contribution to
furthering the profession. In ten years we've published less than a dozen.

Another example of wasted time and effort are the articles we receive on
how to hire a PI. Our articles are written to and for the PI. There is no
need to tell investigators how or why someone should hire them. Send a
query on a new investigative specialty and you'll have my attention.

Writing for this market is little different from writing for the
mainstream publications. Write an article based on your own specific
expertise in a manner that fits their style and guidelines, or find a
topic that you can research, perhaps interview an expert or two, and
prepare it according to the style and guidelines of the target
publications. You just have to spend enough time to become familiar with
your targeted trade.

Whether you're writing for music teachers or cable manufacturers, fruit
growers or fire chiefs, every editor of a "trade" will be excited to hear
from the professional writer who submits a useful, well-defined query and
a solid article.
