BLOCKED
No, I don't have writer's block. I'm not a believer, but I do
recognize the fact that some days flow better than others.
That goes for anything we do. But I'm not just talking writers
block. Sometimes block comes in all shapes and sizes - marketing
block, blogging block, freelance block, self-promotional block.
That's when you learn to shift and focus in another direction.
The last thing you do is stop.
We've all heard the stories about pitching to fifty agents and
being consistently rejected. When I pitched agents, I addressed
them a dozen at a time, every two weeks. At three dozen, I
stopped, waiting for the responses. And while I sat waiting,
in essence blocked, I worked on the second book in The Carolina
Slade Series.
Once I heard from 80% of those 36 queries, and realized some
liked the premise but rejected the manuscript, I went back and
did a major rewrite of Lowcountry Bribe.
Once it was done, I
started querying again. I landed number 72.
As writers, we slide back and forth between two realms:
writing and selling.
Writing includes manuscripts, freelance articles, blogs, and
anything that stirs your creative mind.
Selling includes querying, pitching, marketing, promoting, and
anything that builds your brand.
When you're having a bad day at one, flip over to the other.
Just don't freeze.
Keeping your hand in the pot, always stirring, whether it's
writing or selling, continues to move you forward. In this
business, in case you haven't learned, you put one foot in front
of the other daily, or the world runs over you and forgets you
exist. So, the next time you:
1. Get depressed because the book isn't selling;
2. Get down because indie bookstores aren't interested in you;
3. Pout because you can't get a nod from a publisher;
4. Cry because nobody knows you're a writer;
5. Fuss because nobody comments on your blog;
6. Whine about an inability to find writers;
7. Curse because you can't write the best ending to a chapter;
8. Swear because your critique group hates your story;
9. Rant because your character won't come to life;
10. Hang your head after an hour and only 50 words on the page;
switch. If the problem is writing related, promote. If the
problem is marketing related, then write. One is more left brain
than the other, and there's nothing wrong with giving one side
a rest.
But stop? It's like going to the day job and saying, "I'm not
feeling productive today," and still expecting them to pay you.
Keep that motor running. It's just some days you turn left
and other days you turn right. Just keep moving forward.
Hope

WORDS OF SUCCESS
"If you stuff yourself full of poems, essays, plays, stories,
novels, films, comic strips, magazines, music, you automatically
explode every morning like Old Faithful. I have never had a dry
spell in my life, mainly because I feed myself well, to the point
of bursting. I wake early and hear my morning voices leaping
around in my head like jumping beans. I get out of bed quickly,
to trap them before they escape."
--Ray Bradbury

bring an end to the war through the participation of a young OSS
agent.
I have ordered and look forward to reading Low Country Bribe.

NOT YOUR MOTHER'S ROMANCE NOVELS
by Cynthia MacGregor
Have you checked out the romance market lately? It's not what it
used to be! Yes, so-called "sweet" romances are still out there,
and Christian romances, but more and more romance novels today are
crossing the not-so-fine line into the field of "Adult" (yes, I do
mean what you think I mean) writing. Not only do many romance e-books
these days contain strong erotica components, but the latest trend is
that many women are buying books that detail relationships between
men. There is no heroine in these books. Both lovers are male. And
the scenes not only are explicit but use raw language.
Is it lucrative to write such books? Definitely. The pseudonymous
"Cassandra Pierce," a friend of mine, recently received a royalty
check for over $2,000. This represented her share of sales of several
books for the third quarter of 2011 at just one of several publishers
that handle her romance output.
One of the biggest e-publishers of erotic romance books for women is
Siren-BookStrand, and if you look at their website's Top Sellers list
any day (the list is in a constant state of flux), you'll see that the
majority of books listed there are tagged as "m/m" (male/male), with
most of the rest being some sort of menage arrangement (e.g. "m/m/f"),
usually one wherein the two men are involved with each other and are
not just sharing the woman.
Romance is still essential to these stories, as is a happy ending--
either what's abbreviated as "HEA" (happily ever after) or "HFN"
(happy for now). But so is strong language. A recent submission of
mine to Siren-BookStrand got kicked back to me because I used too
many euphemisms. "We want strong, 'adult' language," the editor wrote.
(A quick revision resulted in an acceptance.)
What brought about this huge change? Assuredly one factor is the
advent of e-books. While most women readers would blanch at the
prospect of hitting the checkout line at B&N with a book whose cover
features two hunky-looking males, downloading an e-book is a much more
anonymous transaction.
Though The Writer's Guide to Paying e-Markets [full disclosure: I'm
co-author] lists a small number of e-publishers who seem to be
selling to the GLBT market, the majority of e-publishers who seek
this type of book are publishing for women readers. Beth Walker, the
publisher at Secret Cravings Publishing, says, "We've found that the
vast majority of readers of the m/m books are women--95% according to
our sales." She adds, "Why this is such a phenomenon, we aren't sure,
but the women love to read these types of stories. They still want
romance as part of the book, though, and expect a deep connection
between the characters."
Yes, these books aren't just unmitigated sex. Siren-BookStrand's
editor insists that there must be a romance component...as well as
explicitly described encounters.
Why do women readers enjoy this type of novel? Comments posted
online in a forum for readers of romance novels may be enlightening.
One such reader writes: "It's about the love, about love having no
limitations and barriers based on gender."
Another reader's view: "I think from a romantic perspective, the
appeal is that if love between two men, which was taboo for so
long, can happen successfully, the take-away message is that
anything, any happy ending, no matter what the obstacles are,
is possible."
Is there "gold in them thar hills"? Definitely. Look at Cassandra's
over-$2000 payday...from just one of her publishers. And the market is
growing daily. Want a piece of it? Join in!
BIO
Cynthia MacGregor's list of 54 conventionally published books and
over 50 e-books does not include her pseudonymously published books,
which include books in the genre she's writing about here, or the
ghostwritten books (not in this genre) that she's crafted for others.
She also does freelance writing of other types, as well as editing.
Her website at
www.cynthiamacgregor.com does not give a hint of her
involvement in male/male romance books but does list many of her
other accomplishments. You can contact her atCynthia@cynthiamacgregor.com
