When people say I'm photogenic, I
tell them they don't see the
pictures I throw away. Here's one the neighbor caught of my
usual photographer and me today when we were sweaty, laying
down sod, helping a new resident in the area fix up his house.
Very un-writer-like, huh?

THE BEAUTY OF A WEBSITE
I just spent three hours going over my son's wedding photographs,
trying to select the right poses of the right people, without
putting a second mortgage on my house. A major task. Especially
when you want one of every picture.
I went through this same quandary with my new website,www.chopeclark.com .
First, this site has my name on it. Second, it represents my Carolina
Slade mysteries, a project I've worked on since 1998. I wanted it to
shine, but I wasn't thrilled about spending an exorbitant amount.
My agent suggested www.xuni.com . Beautiful sites, specifically
for authors. But they require that they host the site, something
I was not happy about. I want to update my own site, 24/7, and
when I say 24 hours a day, it literally means morning, noon or
night. To somebody not comfortable with updating a site, this
turnkey package might work.
Authors on the Web looked professional -
http://authorsontheweb.com/websites.php
So did three other services. Everybody has a remarkable product.
Then Shaila Abdullah of House of Design asked to advertise in
FundsforWriters a few months ago, back in the fall. When she sent
her logo to post with her advertisement, it caught my eye. And
since I research anyone wanting to post anything in FundsforWriters,
I visited both her sites - for both the author and the web designer.
I fell in love. I didn't tell her at the time, but she became a
finalist on my list.
So when the cover to Lowcountry Bribe came out, I knew what I
wanted on a website. I asked Shaila for an estimate, since I'd
already researched the others. She sent a long questionnaire
so she could thoroughly understand me and my needs. Colors,
organic or geometric design, social networking connections or
not, blog or not. I was sold.
My point is that the design for your website and/or blog needs
to be a serious decision. Readers should reach the site and want
to stay. The colors should be pleasing, the layout enticing, the
format easy to follow. And as was the case for me, the updates
should be easy.
Shaila was game for everything and anything I wanted. But she
also had the professional savvy to lead me to some ideas I never
thought about. This is how you should select your designer.
Frankly, it's how you should select your agent, your publisher,
and anyone who will have a large impact on your image and
reputation. Don't spend years writing your stories or building
clientele only to look cheap on your website. Yes, people will
be able to tell you cut corners on your own promotion. If you'll
do that, where else will you shortcut on quality?
Visual sells, and not just on book covers.
In case you are interested, Shaila Abdullah's websites are:
http://www.myhouseofdesign.com/
http://shailaabdullah.com/
Highly recommended. Trust me. If the responses I've received
about my site are any indication of eye-appeal, then Shaila
nailed it. She's made me look so darn good.

LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE is out!
The Carolina Slade Mystery Series is live with its premier
book Lowcountry Bribe. Welcome to the world of Carolina Slade.
She's a simple government employee offered a bribe.
She follows the rules and tells the authorities.
Then all hell breaks loose because she did.
"Jesse drew me by my stretched sleeve to the truck bed, my face
barely a foot from the nearest body. "There's ten thousand dollars
in it for you," he whispered, draping his arm around my shoulders.
"If you find a way to get me the Williams farm. We can iron out
the details later . . . in private." He winked and clicked his
tongue. "If you know what I mean."
Panic coursed through me at the altered state. Like hearing that
your churchgoing mother liked bourbon straight and sex on top.
He'd offered me a bribe."

WORDS OF SUCCESS
The wishbone will never replace the backbone.
- Will Henry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
In 2010, I entered your Funds for Writers contest with an essay
that confronted that huge question of why I write. I didn't win,
but I took that piece and re-shaped it and fired it off to Writer's
Digest, pitching it as a piece for their "5-Minute-Memoir" section.
They accepted it, and my essay, "Artmaking," appears in the March
2012 issue.
Had I not taken a chance at your contest, writing something from
scratch that I hoped would speak to the contest's theme, I would
not be celebrating a publication with a major writer's magazine
today. The contest, in other words, gave me the motivation to sit
down and craft a new piece of work. That was its sole purpose at
the time, although I didn't see it as such. (I wanted to win!) I
hope my publication journey with this piece can be an encouragement
to others who are trying to get their work out there. Just because a
piece isn't accepted in one place doesn't mean the next place won't
love it. If you pour your heart and soul into a piece of work and it
gets rejected, you have not wasted your time. In many cases, as long
as you keep putting yourself and your work out there, your work is
just brimming on a potentially exciting future and home. It just
might not be the home you specifically imagined.
Thanks, Hope, for considering this success story as you prepare
upcoming newsletter editions. You do so much for the writing
community, and I am grateful to be a follower.
Sincerely,
Kate Meadows

ARTICLE

Who Me? Yes, You.
By Candi Stargell
Amid barking dogs and political vitriol, a brave young woman
named Meagan Adele Lopez caught my attention a few weeks ago.
Seeking funding for her debut novel, Three Questions' book
trailer, she launched a Kickstarter project and wrote an
article for Hope detailing her journey. You may remember her,
but I wonder if you noticed something else, even more tantalizing.
Meagan offered to mentor anyone who wanted to launch a Kickstarter.
All the interested party had to do was send her an email. I boldly
took her up on that very offer. Ever ready to answer any question
I may have, even from across the pond, she has amazed me with her
generosity in time and spirit. So, why did I bother to write this
love letter about my mentor? Simple, I want someone to write one
about you one day.
There are so many writers that need a compass for success and
failure, but they are hard to find. My past attempts at being
mentored and mentoring never quite worked. While they and I tried,
it's not innately in writers' nature to invest such emotional
collateral beyond the page. Are we that self-involved and
narcissistic? Some of us are, sure, but I'd like to think that
people generally don't know what they're doing when it comes to
such relationships, especially the intangible aspects, therefore
they falter.
Here are three tips that may help you out:
Keep It Simple, Focused, and Professional: While it is very tempting
to segue into different aspects of the human experience, i.e.
gossiping, "bitching," and the XYZ of daily life, it's not mentoring.
If you both focus on the writing, the work, mutual support, and what
it takes to be successful all systems should be go.
Grab A Pole, Grab A Line: As the song says "You get a line/I'll get
a pole/We'll go fishin' in the crawfish hole," it takes two to have
a successful mentoring relationship and a day's catch. Bringing
questions, insights, and how they think the Mentor can help achieve
their goals are the responsibility of the person being Mentored.
Ego Check: Exhibit A: To Kill A Mockingbird's Harper Lee and Truman
Capote, as documented in the (fabulous) To Kill A Mockingbird
documentary, "Hey Boo," two childhood friends were friends and
mentors, until Lee's overwhelming success drove Truman away -
permanently. Ego is a dangerous thing, but don't let its subtle
dominion of one corner of your psyche spoil all your fun. You can
Google the rules for mentoring, but you can't Google a heart.
If you subscribe to this newsletter you are a relentless seeker of
the written word. You are someone who remembers the first book that
touched your heart, made you cry or laugh, and stop to question your
purpose. Perhaps you want to accomplish these transformative moments
in your own work like I do. Great, but why not start closer to home?
Start with a real, live person, that needs you in the here and now,
to make a difference in their life. Try being a Mentor. Put yourself
on the back burner for a few moments a week, day, or month and learn
something about yourself that the page can't tell you.

WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!

ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS
Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we
were currently accepting submissions. It had been exactly 24
hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,
chapters, entire manuscripts --- the influx has just now slowed
down. We received way over forty responses to our ad, and they
are still pouring in. (BTW, this is a very good problem!). Just
wanted to let you know we think you and your newsletter rock!
It's just amazing and let's us know just how loyal your fans are.
