CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE . . . NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY
Last night, while speaking at an arts council event, someone asked
me if self-pubbing was the thing to do while also trying to land a
traditional publisher or agent. The logic was that going ahead and
producing a product would be more appealing to an agent. He asked
my opinion.
I said it depends. If one does well selling a self-pubbed book,
agents would jump all over the story, because it's proven
itself. It can't help but sell more when given the traditional
touch. He asked what "sells well" meant in numbers. I said there
was no set rule, but unofficially, from the experts I knew, the
number would be at least 5,000.
I think I disappointed him, he was hard to read. He sat,
contemplating. So I kept talking on the subject. I discussed
blogging, guest blogging, appearances, and a solid home on the
web so readers could find him. Twitter, Facebook, etc. He said,
"Yeah, but I'm not wanting to work as hard as you do."
The room chuckled.
He spoke for most of the room, I suspected. People had other
lives and other employment. Writing was that "thing" they wanted
to do, did off and on, but didn't feel confident enough to jump
into it whole hog and take that risk.
"I don't have time," resonated.
It's hard for me to talk about this subject without being
preachy, and I caught myself several times in the presentation.
First, I'm selling Lowcountry Bribe.
Second, I don't like
dragging people down. One on one, however, I can talk this with
more serious reality.
While writing takes tons of work, promoting it takes even more.
I'm working 12-hour days. I'm tired. I'm busy. And I still keep
thinking of more I could be doing. While riding to and from this
presentation, I worked, judging a book contest and Beta reading/
critiquing a colleague's manuscript before it heads to the
publisher.
I have eye drops at my computer these days. My husband has taken
over my travel calendar, ensuring dates don't collide and we
have a place to stay along the way. And I'm trying hard as hell
to finish edits on the second book.
Writing doesn't become a living. You make it one.
You can't wait to make enough income to justify leaving the
job, you have to proactively tackle it. But you have another
job, or another life, and you don't have the time. Truth is,
until you give it a full-time effort, it can't morph into a
full-time profession. If that means working 80 hours a week,
half at one job and half at writing, you do so. Then when you
see that income rising to the level you desire, make the leap.
But . . . novels/books don't make fast money. They suck time
and deliver a low rate of return. Yep, they do. That's when you
commit for the long haul, with a focus on the end game, when
books begin to make money for you.
Being stuck in the middle is not fun. It's exhausting and
frustrating. But, anything worth having is worth the effort.
It just depends on how deeply you want it.

LOWCOUNTRY BRIBE is
out!
The Carolina Slade Mystery Series is live with its premier
book Lowcountry Bribe. Welcome
to the world of Carolina Slade.
She's a simple government employee offered a bribe.
She follows the rules and tells the authorities.
Then all hell breaks loose because she did.
"Jesse drew me by my stretched sleeve to the truck bed, my face
barely a foot from the nearest body. "There's ten thousand dollars
in it for you," he whispered, draping his arm around my shoulders.
"If you find a way to get me the Williams farm. We can iron out
the details later . . . in private." He winked and clicked his
tongue. "If you know what I mean."
Panic coursed through me at the altered state. Like hearing that
your churchgoing mother liked bourbon straight and sex on top.
He'd offered me a bribe."

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Hope,
I was astonished and delighted when I heard that my sonnet,
'Child and the Future', had won the Swanezine Poetry Competition.
http://sites.google.com/site/swanezine/poetry-competition-results-2012
I was also as thrilled as you when my first book came out -
'Contains Strong Language and Scenes of a Sexual Nature', and then
when I first edited a poetry collection - 'Best of Manchester Poets',
but then that's one of the wonderful things about writing; one never
knows what will happen next, and it's usually something exciting and
unexpected!
I can't thank you enough for your listings. There are a few
newsletters out there, but yours is always interesting and
friendly as well as informative.
Thanks and best wishes,
Granted! A Special Place for Your Poetry
By: Anastasia Clark
Getting a poem or a book published is rewarding and exciting!
But, getting a grant for your poetry, now that is invigorating!
The idea of applying for a grant was suggested to me by a grants
administrator at Broward County (Florida) Cultural Division.
She happened to stop by my display table at a mini trade show
for local artists and she mentioned that I might qualify for a
grant. Wow! Free money? I could hardly wait to get home to look
up the requirements.
After the show, I visited their website and began learning about
their Individual Artist Mini-Grant program. It was a program
that offered $2,000 grants for specific projects within one's
artistic discipline. I eventually attended a public meeting to
learn more about how to apply. I was quickly swept into the dream
that I might actually get a grant!! Free money for doing what I
love!! Dare I think it?
I'll be honest, the application was daunting. It consisted of
numerous pages of questions about me, my artist statement, my
goals, my project and its merits. Budget questions. Facility
questions. Marketing plans? Artist statement? Wow. Did I even
have one of those? What exactly was an artist statement? I
learned it was basically a summary of one's body of work and
vision.
Applying for a grant makes you take a good look at yourself.
Is your body of work worthy? Are you worthy? What are you offering?
Does it have merit? Is it special? Unique? Can you deliver? How
does it impact a community to the point that taxpayers or other
donors would ultimately be willing to pay for it? What are your
goals? Where are you headed? Is this just a weekend hobby or a
bona-fide serious pursuit? These questions are the cornerstone of
grant-writing. I thank the Broward County Cultural Division for
that life-altering insight.
My project was fairly easy: ten poetry readings at ten libraries.
I would also include writing tips and poetry news. I learned,
however, that trying to get consent and confirmation from so many
different libraries would be tedious. All confirmations and
correspondence had to be submitted with the grant proposal. Then
there were other emails- with advertisers who might offer discounts-
and others who had to verify the facilities were handicap-accessible.
In total, my application was approximately 56 pages long. I needed
10 copies of it.
A few months later, I found out my application was approved!
Yippee! It was one of those moments in your writing career that
you cherish! A moment that you say to yourself, someone indeed
likes me and my work!
I completed the "FY2010 Broward County Poet-in-Residence Anastasia
Clark Poetry Reading Series" in the spring of 2010. It was a wonderful
success and I was so grateful for the experience. I had learned a
lot and subsequently applied for and won a FY2011 mini-grant for a
series of poetry workshops. This time it involved only five libraries.
If you are interested in getting a grant, there are plenty of
opportunities. Contacting your local Parks and Recreation Dept is
a great place to start your search. If your project has local appeal,
this would be a fantastic avenue to gain funding. Visiting your
state's Cultural Affairs Division is another lead. For example, The
Iowa Division of Cultural Affairs / Iowa Arts Council
(
http://www.iowaartscouncil.org/funding/overview.shtml ) offers a
detailed list of grants. Texas Commission on the Arts
(
http://www2.arts.state.tx.us/tcagrant/TXArtsPlan/TAPTOC.asp )
provides a comprehensive list of funding opportunities, as well.
The National Endowment for the Arts also funds numerous grants and
fellowships (
http://www.nea.gov/grants/apply/Lit.html ).
Applying for a grant is a fun, albeit daunting journey. I have
learned that grant-writing is the perfect chance to distill your
thoughts and ideas into a manageable project- and to create a
special garden where your work can truly flourish.
WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!
