=====

YOU ARE THE SUM TOTAL OF YOUR PARTS

When we become a writer, we often have a goal in mind. We envision

the "one day" of being a successful writer, which to many means
a book. To some it's a special book after several near-misses.
To others it's a reputation and a long list of bylines.

All too soon after we begin this journey, we realize that long-

term goal is pretty far down the path . . . almost out of
sight. Then we wonder if we are on the right path. That writing
gold ring seems too distant to take seriously.

Most quit.

Writing, like everything else we do in our lives, is not comprised

of just fun moments and blue ribbons. And sometimes it's not
about the dream. There's a lot of "stuff" along the way, and at
times it takes becoming successful at the little tasks in between
to gain confidence and build a proper plan for that ultimate
moment we call "reaching the star."

We underestimate who we are and what we can do. And we greatly

underestimate how those identifying factors and talents factor
into who we are as writers.

Name five of your assets, likes or talents. Use me as an example:

Love gardening

Love the outdoors
Love the simple life
Love living healthy
Love to write

My ultimate goal is to publish a mystery series. It's taken me

a decade to find an agent and land a contract for the first book
in this series. I'd have gone hungry waiting for money from
book sales, so I used my interests to do other writing. I started
FundsforWriters. I wrote for magazines. I spoke at small groups,
then later large groups. I wrote blog posts for myself and others.
I incorporated most of my five interests in what I did.

Funny thing is, along the way I learned:

1. how to write better

2. how to find my voice
3. how to develop a platform
4. how to approach agents and editors
5. how to be patient
6. how to appreciate good writing
7. how to write my dream project better

The inability to snare a main project so quickly causes us to

adjust and make other arrangements until we can reach that
ultimate destination. Along that route, we grow so much.
When we start out, lusting for that lone-project, we think
one-dimensional. Sometimes the alternate routes, side trips
and interim destinations become medicinal and developmental
for our talents.

Next time you curse being unable to publish your book, step

off the treadmill and try writing a magazine article, entering
a poetry contest, or guest blogging. Compose a piece of flash,
a romance piece, or a journalistic feature for a local
publication. Devise an essay for Chicken Soup, a how-to
piece for a hobby trade, or an interview for a website. Answer
an ad for writing an ebook, press release or newsletter.

The baby-step experience will take you closer to a better

long-term project. I promise.

Hope

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Hope.
I am glad to report that as a result of your newsletter, I
am finally beginning to find markets for my writing. I had
been feeling down and out about my mother in law's Alzheimer
Disease and what's going on with the family as a result. I
wrote a series of articles on how that disease affects the
in-law relationship and the entire family, especially how it
causes us to go through the grieving process many times over.
I submitted the series to You&Me Magazine, which I had heard
of in one of your newsletters. Although they are a small
internet publication and couldn't print the whole thing, they
took a nice 1300 word excerpt of it, for which they are paying
me a nice sum. I'm praying that they'll post my website
information on theirs so others can contact me and I can start
doing good in the world, at least as someone to whom other
in-laws of Alzheimer patients can turn and chat, if not that a
larger publisher might see it and inquire on the whole series.
Please, keep up the good work - I also have other articles
submitted to markets listed in your newsletter, and my first
children's story is in the hand of a publisher listed in your
Tweetebook for that market awaiting their reply.
Thanks,
Veronica Bergschneider
How to Become a Favorite Freelancer
By Michelle Mach
I hated writing query letters when I worked a full-time day job. I
wrote them, but I resented giving up the few precious writing hours I
had carved out on weekends and evenings. It wasn't until I became a
full-time freelancer that I discovered a great way to avoid the formal
letter: become a favorite freelancer and editors will come to you for
assignments (or at least accept queries that are more casual and
quicker to write).
In addition to turning in your well-researched, beautifully written,
typo-free article on time (or better yet, early), as a favorite
freelancer you should:
1. Say Yes--Most of the Time
If you can meet the occasional last-minute request, aren't afraid to
write on new subjects, and agree to do rewrites, you'll likely become
a go-to freelancer for an editor. You don't need to become a doormat.
Sometimes you'll need to say no ("Sorry, I'm not able to write a
1,000-word article on monster trucks today."), but try to say yes as
often as possible.
2. Solve Problems
If you do need to say no, can you offer a solution? ("I know another
reliable freelancer who goes to monster truck shows every week. He'd
probably love to write that article," or "I'll do it if I can turn in
the article tomorrow.") If I run into problems--such as an AWOL
interview source--I always try to figure out a solution, so I can
contact the editor with both the problem and a possible solution.
Otherwise, my problem has just become another task on her very long
to-do list.
3. Offer Extras
Editors are being asked to do more these days. Sometimes they're
responsible for both print and online versions of their publications.
They may appreciate suggestions for extra content such as videos,
podcasts, photo galleries, or blog posts, if it means less time on
their part. (And no, you don't need to offer extras for free.)
4. Use Social Media Wisely
Obviously, you'd never bad-mouth the editors or publications online,
but simply being overly active on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook can
strike some editors the wrong way, especially if you have an
assignment due. You don't want to be caught yapping about your cute
dog on Facebook when your assignment is two days late. The editor may
not notice, but someone else on the staff may.
It's also nice to mention and link to your publications on your blog
and website. Many editors must promote their publications as part of
their jobs and welcome any help boosting their numbers of subscribers,
followers, or friends. Keeping them in business helps keep you in
business.
5. Stay in Touch--But Not Too Much
When working on an assignment, I only contact the editor if I run into
a problem. Between assignments, in addition sending periodic queries,
I sometimes forward relevant news or kudos (such as a link to a blog
that favorably reviewed the publication) to my editors. The idea is
to periodically remind editors that you exist, so that when an
assignment comes up, your name is the one they remember. Of course,
you don't want to overdo this. An email once every month or two is
probably fine; an email every day is not.
By following these five tips, soon you'll also be receiving nice
emails from editors like the one I received recently: "Thank you!
Don't ever stop freelancing!"
http://jacqueline-adams.com/ :
 "When I first saw Shaila's work, I was struck by the fact that each
site she designs is not only beautiful but also perfectly reflects the
personality of the business it represents. She spent time getting to
know me and my work to ascertain what would appeal to me. When she sent
the initial designs for my site, I was blown away--it was as if
she'd gotten inside my mind and seen exactly what I wanted, and then
raised it to a higher level. Her suggestions, insight, and artistic
talent made the final product much better than what I'd envisioned on my
own. Shaila was a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend her."
WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!
ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS
Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we
were currently accepting submissions. It had been exactly 24
hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,
chapters, entire manuscripts --- the influx has just now slowed
down. We received way over forty responses to our ad, and they
are still pouring in.  (BTW, this is a very good problem!). Just
wanted to let you know we think you and your newsletter rock!
It's just amazing and lets us know just how loyal your fans are.
