HOW TO FINANCE A BOOK? - LIKE ANYTHING ELSE

Spoke to the VP of Marketing for a major self-pubbing press
this week. They are about to launch into audio books in a
very cool way, and I may be assisting them in the future.
Anyway . . . she asked if I'd write for their newsletter.
I asked what about. She said many of her authors want to
self-publish but cannot afford the cost. She wanted me to
write 200-300 pieces on how to make that happen.

The thing is . . . it's like financing anything else. If
you want to buy a car, purchase new bedroom furniture,
locate money for a vacation, or pay for the kid's fall
tuition, how do you find the funds?

1. Borrow the money.

2. Save the money.

3. Earn the money.

Now, some of you may say, "Hey, there are scholarships for
tuition, so why not for writers?" Yes, scholarships indeed
exist. However, they are based upon performance, i.e., grades
and activity involvement. For writers, they are based upon
writing performance.

Brand new writers (writers who have not published or won awards
regardless of how long they've written) often ask for grants
to write or publish. A grant provider will ask for proof of
performance, or proof of ability - just like a scholarship
donor. Some scholarships are based upon need; however, they
still require certain minimum grades point averages as well
as proof of graduation and even references. There is a threshold
where even those who are needy do not qualify . . . because
they haven't shown they can perform.

So, when you need the money to publish a book, think like
you would about making any other major purchase:

1. Tally the total cost.
2. Set a goal to borrow, save, or earn the money.

Whoa, borrow? What if the book doesn't sell?

Cough, cough. If you don't have enough confidence in your
own book to borrow money against it, then why ask anyone
else to donate money toward the cause? As the originator
of this project, you know the risks more than anyone else.

But maybe you cannot borrow the money. Then save from your
other sources of income. Tuck the money aside until you
reach your goal.

But what if you don't have much in terms of other sources of
income due to the economy, retirement or disability? Then you
earn the money. You profess to be a writer. So write. Save
every dime until you have enough to make your book project
come to pass.

Make your dream happen. It's in your power. You just have
to make up your mind it's worth sweating hard enough.

WORDS OF SUCCESS

It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion;
it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great
man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect
sweetness the independence of solitude.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FundsforWriters readers won at least three of the twenty
prizes in the Intergeneration Storytelling Contest for 2011.
Here are comments from two.
http://www.intergenerationday.org/storyboard.html
----
Dear Hope,
I have had two months of remarkable. I placed 83 in the Writer's
Digest contest on the topic Inspiration! It was a sermon I had
written and used in church two years ago. The topic was "Mothers:
Dreamkeepers, Peacemakers and Memory Makers. It is my understanding
that this one contest had 11,800 entries! When I wrote this I
thought I'd write as though I were Joel Osteen only female!
As if that were not enough, I went to the mailbox and there was
something from Intergeneration Foundation. I opened it and there
was a check for $100! They had chosen to give all 10 winners a
check for $100 instead of placing them in one to ten. My poem
was titled Grandmother/Granddaughter!
What this has taught me is not to doubt myself! Some places
where we submit just might not be the "right" place, but not
to ever, ever quit trying! I've always been a person who is
an "encourager" and I am writing this to you as a "thank you"
for being an "encourager" to me!
Lynn R. Hartz Ph.D.
Hello Dear Hope!
I read about the Intergeneration Storytelling Contest in your
newsletter. I want to thank you for bringing it to my attention
because I submitted a story and received a certificate of
distinction as one of the top twenty pieces. I appreciate and
look forward to your fine newsletter. Your articles are so
informative and the listing of contests and publishers is very
helpful. You really make a difference for writing and writers
everywhere! Thank you!
Singing a Book's Praises with Back Cover Copy
By Rachel Carrington
How many times has the back cover copy of a book caught
your attention and intrigued you enough to make you have
to buy the book? How many other books have you put back
because the copy bored you or sounded like a repeat of the
last book you read?
More and more authors are choosing to self-publish, but
along with the independence they gain, they lose a valuable
asset--a publishings company's marketing department. Those are
the folks who usually create one of the most important selling
tools in the industry--the back cover copy or the blurb, if
you will.
When writing copy for a book, the main goal is to entice
readers to buy that book, usually in one-hundred fifty words
or less. That's not an easy task for some writers, but if you
can use powerful words and phrases to capture the attention of
potential buyers, you have an open door to this market.
Before you begin writing back cover copy for books, spend some
time at your local bookstore or library and read a few book
covers. Get a feel for each genre, pay attention to the words
used, and ask yourself if you would have written the copy the
same way.
A reader doesn't want to know everything that's going to happen
between the front and back cover of that book. They want just
enough information to make them want to find out what's going
to happen, and your job is to make it difficult for them to
put the book down and walk away.
Now, start practicing. Head on over to Amazon.com, take some
of the more boring book descriptions, and check out the sales
rankings. If they're in the millions or even high six digits,
you're heading in the right direction.
It's not difficult to find the self-published books. Createspace,
Lulu, Iuniverse, and xlibris are the most popular publishing
outlets available to individual authors. So if you look for
books published by those companies, you'll have your foot in
the door.
Take that boring copy and make it zing. Replace the passive
verbs with active and polish those few words until you would
want to buy the book. This is where your creativity really comes
into play. Make the readers think, feel, and dream, if possible,
but most importantly, make them want to buy that book.
Once you've recreated two or three of the back cover copies,
approach some self-published authors (most of them have their
website linked to their names at Amazon) and tell them you
believe your copy could help them. Show them your examples.
Let them choose the better copy. Odds are good it will be yours.
Now, tell them you can do the same for their book description.
Even with practice, you're still a novice in this area so you'll
want to keep your cost low. You certainly don't want to scare
off the self-published authors, many of whom are operating with
a tight budget. Ten dollars would be a good starting point, but
once you build your clientele and excel, you can claim as much
as or more than $100 per blurb.
You can increase your portfolio by finding more self-published
authors at: http://www.selfpublishedauthors.com . Just click on
Memberlist or visit Smashwords. If the book isn't associated
with a company name, it was probably published by an independent
author which gives you a wellspring of potential clients. Once
you have several self-published authors utilizing your services,
you'll be ready to approach the smaller publishers who can use
your talents!
 "When I first saw Shaila's work, I was struck by the fact that each
site she designs is not only beautiful but also perfectly reflects the
personality of the business it represents. She spent time getting to
know me and my work to ascertain what would appeal to me. When she sent
the initial designs for my site, I was blown away--it was as if
she'd gotten inside my mind and seen exactly what I wanted, and then
raised it to a higher level. Her suggestions, insight, and artistic
talent made the final product much better than what I'd envisioned on my
own. Shaila was a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend her."
WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!
ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS
Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we
were currently accepting submissions. It had been exactly 24
hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,
chapters, entire manuscripts --- the influx has just now slowed
down. We received way over forty responses to our ad, and they
are still pouring in.  (BTW, this is a very good problem!). Just
wanted to let you know we think you and your newsletter rock!
It's just amazing and lets us know just how loyal your fans are.
