WHY WRITE AT ALL?

I recently wrote a blog post that categorized new writers in

one of the following categories:

1. They have a story to tell about what impacts us deeply.

2. They have a story to tell that will affect others deeply.
3. They want to make a living.

I dared say that spanking new writers usually fell into 1 or 3

until they earned their sea legs and developed voice and maturity.
Personally, I was in #1 for at least two years. I had a couple of
folks take issue with my stance, the gist being that writers write
to help, entertain, and educate readers. Completely altruistic.

I'd love to believe that. But it's borderline naive.

I argued that we have to become a combination of all three.

We may think we are a proper balance of all three, but
that end goal is not quickly achieved nor easily recognized.
The balance comes about as fast as discovering your true voice.
In other words, it takes time, lots of rejection, lots of
study, and lots of reading successful work.

Frankly, I can classify most professions this same way.

Teachers, doctors, real estate agents. Newbies begin their
journey one-dimensional - the need to express their talents,
reach others, or earn a living. Over time they realize the
journey isn't that simple, and they start searching for ways
to incorporate the other two missing facets into their career.

If we tell a personal tale from deep within us, we often do

so without wondering who will gain anything from the telling.
The story burns within, so we tell it. We say it doesn't matter
if it sells, because it's a story to be told. You can often
detect some of these folks in a critique group when they
resist feedback. The story is theirs, and only they can see
it clearly.

If we write for money, writing to pay the bills, we become

eager to pen almost anything that pays well. We'll write on
most any topic - fluff or journalism, fiction or nonfiction,
prose or poetry.

If we are unselfish in our writing, only writing for a person

or group, we have no expectation of earning a decent living.
Just writing for others might be noble, but without planning
financially for the future, the writer goes broke. He can also
burn out writing only for the readership instead of for himself
as well.

The smart writer writes with a plan. He understands that he

has to write well, i.e., from the heart as well as the head.
He has to write material that intrigues the public, or it
won't sell. And he must balance his creativity with his
business sense in order to earn a living.

It might be wonderful to be such a bright, creative soul,

but you can't live off half a brain. That right brain
enchantment needs the accompaniment of the left brain to
focus and succeed. Balance is key.

How Else Can I Make Money as a Children's Writer?

By Margo L. Dill

If you are a children's writer and focused on children's magazines

and traditional publishers, then you might be feeling frustrated.
More and more kids' magazines are closing their doors. Publishing
companies are folding and more are becoming agent-only. To keep
your career alive, you can find ways to earn multiple streams of
income. As my grandma used to say, "Don't put all your eggs in one
basket." So, what else can you do to advance your children's
writing career besides submitting to children's magazines and
traditional publishing companies?

Query Parenting, Family, and Teaching Magazines

I recently taught a course for the Working Writers Coaching Club

about writing for parenting magazines. One of my students said,
"As a children's writer, I never thought about writing for these
types of magazines, but I see how they go hand in hand." Because
there seem to be fewer publications for children accepting
queries and working with freelancers, you can look at the ones
that are geared toward their parents or teachers. Did you write
a craft article for a children's magazine? Rewrite it as an
activity parents can do with their children, and find a magazine
that accepts this article type. You can look at national magazines,
such as Parenting, or a regional magazine like, Indy's Child. A
great website to explore for more ideas is
http://www.parentingpublications.org
.

Start a Writing Coach or Editing Business

If you're a published children's author, consider coaching

beginning children's writers. Being a writing coach consists of
helping a new writer create goals and stick to them. You will
offer feedback on writing projects and help clients submit their
work to publishers. If coaching isn't for you, what about editing?
Do you have an English or business degree? Put it to good use and
create an editing business. There are hundreds of writers out
there who have a good story to tell, but they need help with their
grammar, spelling, story structure, and so on. You can work as an
editor and help them get their manuscript ready for submission.
Start advertising your business with a free blog from
http://www.blogger.com
.

Educational Writing

Educational writing seems to be one area where writers are still

needed. Companies are hiring writers to pen non-fiction books for
the classroom and library. Publishers take query ideas for books
full of lesson plans and activities. Educational testing companies
need writers for their testing passages and the questions that go
with them. Check out some of these companies if you are interested
in writing for the educational market and reaching kids in a whole
new way--at school: Enslow Publishers Inc., Teacher Created
Materials, Scholastic, Educational Testing Services, Key Education
Publishing, Hayes Educational Publishing, and Lerner Publishing
Group.

Leading Workshops for Teachers, Kids, Librarians, and Other Writers

Even if you don't have a book published, you can still create

workshops and talks, where people pay you to speak. The best
way to start a speaking business is to look at your areas of
expertise and design a few specific workshops on these topics.
Create catchy titles and descriptions, and post them on your
website or blog. Include a note that fees are negotiable, and
make sure to have an easy way to contact you through e-mail and
phone.

Although the children's magazine world isn't the most lucrative

right now and many children's writers are having difficulty
securing contracts, this doesn't mean that you can't have a
successful, paying career as a children's writer. It just means
you have to look at other ways to play on your strengths and
build the career you want!

"When I first saw Shaila's work, I was struck by the fact that each
site she designs is not only beautiful but also perfectly reflects the
personality of the business it represents. She spent time getting to
know me and my work to ascertain what would appeal to me. When she sent
the initial designs for my site, I was blown away--it was as if
she'd gotten inside my mind and seen exactly what I wanted, and then
raised it to a higher level. Her suggestions, insight, and artistic
talent made the final product much better than what I'd envisioned on my
own. Shaila was a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend her."

WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?

For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to

make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.

If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!

ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS

Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we

were currently accepting submissions. It had been exactly 24
hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,
chapters, entire manuscripts --- the influx has just now slowed
down. We received way over forty responses to our ad, and they
are still pouring in.  (BTW, this is a very good problem!). Just
wanted to let you know we think you and your newsletter rock!
It's just amazing and lets us know just how loyal your fans are.
