On the porch at the end of an autumn day. You know those days.
When the sun is amazingly bright and the air warm but nippy all
at the same time? Thus the tie-dyed t-shirt and fuzzy slippers.
I can never keep my feet warm. Harper's enjoying her first fall.

MORE IDEAS ON RAISING MONEY TO PUBLISH

People showed interest in last week's piece about how to
raise money to self-publish a book. Two authors sent me
original ideas that are so simple they merit a "slap the
forehead" moment.

Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of The Frugal Book Promoter
( http://budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo  ) wrote:

"I actually sold a few ads for the backmatter in my new edition
of the Frugal Book It isn't right for every book, but the idea
has been used since high schoolers started publishing yearbooks."

Oh my gosh, why hadn't I thought of that! I used to be a yearbook
editor and sold many an advertisement for the back of the book.
Self-publishing a book means you have full rein over how to
format and compose it. Why not list sponsors? Why not post ads?

Tacky? Depends. The Big Six publishers put the first chapter
of a sequel in the back of a book. If that isn't advertising
I don't know what is. Besides, as a self-published author,
since when do you care what others think about how you
publish? Same goes for advertisements. Go for it. Just keep
them polished and simple so they don't overwhelm the book.

Dan Bessie and Jeanne Johnson, husband and wife authors, did
what major publishers already do . . . took advance orders.

"We wrote up simple letters detailing what each book would be
about and explained that the books would be available in three
months. Then we sent these letters out to everyone we knew.
By the time the books were printed we had 250 orders for my
book, and about 100 for Jeanne's. My book sold for $23;
Jeanne's for $15. The total of about $6250 more than covered
the cost of design and printing (several people bought 3 or
more copies; a few bought 5 to 10 copies each of mine, to give
out to friends).

We then (since we were moving to France) went on an 8,000 mile,
10-week driving trip across the U.S., speaking at libraries,
bookstores, clubs and private homes--venues that we had previously
set up by simple email contacts, a total of about 35 events--
talking about our books and offering them for sale."

Dan's REELING THROUGH HOLLYWOOD has just been released in e-book
format by untreedreads.com - and STARLINGS IN THE PARK (along
with another of Dan Reese's previously published works, RARE BIRDS,
AN AMERICAN FAMILY (a family memoir) will both be released shortly
by Untreed Reads

Books are no different than any other commodity. You identify
the market, set up a promotional plan, and follow through.
Many writers are so afraid of "putting themselves out there."
They fear the book will fail or won't be respected, or they'll
embarrass themselves.

You have to market to sell. Period. It takes a little bit
of money. You fork out the money out of your own pocket,
or you find supporters and partners. And as creative as you
are, I'm sure you can find innovative methods to earn the
funds to self-publish your books.

Dear Hope,

I am so inspired by your site and your son looked so gallant
and confident in his wedding photo with you, and you, so PROUD!
Go Mums of grooms! (I have 3 sons.)

You included a link to the magazine NC BackHome magazine ages
ago which I followed up and they are publishing one of my
articles in there. Thanks for that. I have written this
particular article four different ways and have had all
versions published so your readers may want to know that
this is a good technique to 'spread' work out there.

How to Survive the "Screening Out" Process to Get Published and Paid

By: Jennifer Brown Banks

Ask anybody who has ever operated a government funding program,
or provided jobs for the general public, and they'll tell you
that as much as they'd like to accommodate all those that apply,
they simply can't.

The reality is, they must operate within certain restrictions
and resources. Truth be told, there are only so many dollars to
dole out, or slots to fill due to budgetary guidelines, timing,
and strategic goals.

So, what does this have to do with writing?
I'm glad you asked.

A similar principle prevails when it comes to editors and
publishers. Unfortunately, many naïve freelancers believe that
because editors need ongoing content for the success and growth
of their publications, that it is simply a situation of supply
and demand. That as long as they produce quality pieces, they
will get paid regularly and be able to support themselves.

Not quite. Not now.

Here's why: in a tough economy, publishing dollars are shrinking,
while the pool of talented writers is increasing exponentially
due to the advent of the Internet, (and a tough economy). It's
the "Catch 22" of writing today.

With this in mind, here are five timely tips to increase odds
in your favor.

1. Have them "at hello." Not only are publishing dollars
shrinking, so is the time-frame in which busy, over-worked
editors will allow you to "wow" them and win them over. Start
with a compelling headline, and a good lead in. Effective openings
include: a provocative question, an important statistic, a bold
claim, or a statement that challenges conventional wisdom. Seal
the deal by capturing their attention with quality content.
Quickly. Time is of the essence.

2. Make it hard to say no. Compare and compete. Does your idea
stand out as original? Are your credentials more impressive
than the "average Joe"? Does your article show an understanding
of the mission, slant, and audience of the publication? The more
items you are able to satisfy of an editor's mental "wish list"
the less likely you are to be rejected.

3. Leave no stone unturned. Like most "consumers," editors are
looking for the most bang for their buck. With this in mind, go
beyond the basics. Use side-bars, unusual statistics, expert
quotes, relevant links and resources, and photos to give your
submission more mileage. Additionally, play the devil's advocate.
In other words, try to consider any potential objections or
criticisms that an editor might have and address them beforehand.
Remember "You never get a second chance to make a good first
impression."

4. Get intimate with editors. Don't just familiarize yourself
with their guidelines and preferences. Know their pet peeves.
Their affiliations. Read their Bios and their editorials.
Knowledge is power.

5. Adhere to Editorial Calendars. More and more magazines,
websites, and even Blogs are implementing Editorial Calendars
to establish themes and designated deadlines for content being
published. Examples would be:

http://wemagazineforwomen.com/about/editorial-calendar/
http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3748128
http://www.globelink.ca/magazines/whatsnew/page5/

Keep in mind that in today's publishing climate, being a good
writer is simply not good enough. You must be strategic and
smart to advance your swagger.

Apply these five savvy tips and you'll make more money, while
enjoying the many perks of being a member of the "in" crowd.

"When I first saw Shaila's work, I was struck by the fact that each
site she designs is not only beautiful but also perfectly reflects the
personality of the business it represents. She spent time getting to
know me and my work to ascertain what would appeal to me. When she sent
the initial designs for my site, I was blown away--it was as if
she'd gotten inside my mind and seen exactly what I wanted, and then
raised it to a higher level. Her suggestions, insight, and artistic
talent made the final product much better than what I'd envisioned on my
own. Shaila was a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend her."

WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?

For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.

If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!

ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS

Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we

hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,

are still pouring in.  (BTW, this is a very good problem!). Just
wanted to let you know we think you and your newsletter rock!
It's just amazing and lets us know just how loyal your fans are.
