NOVELS DON'T MAKE MONEY, YOU KNOW
In case you're heavy into your manuscript and not coming
up for air very often, I want to let you know that first
novels do not make much money.
Big pause while that sinks in.
The first novel will not make you rich. My guess is that
you have a better chance of winning the lottery . . . with
a lot less headache, time and money. We scoff at people who
play the lottery, who knowingly throw money away. Put a dollar
value on each hour spent penning that best-ever story, and
see who's smarter with his money.
Even the authors who traditionally published before, who've
jumped ship to self-publish via ebooks, have to admit they
are making most of their money with their backlist. I can
think of only one person making a killing on her first book,
and that's Kathryn Stockett with her story THE HELP. One of
of several million first-time novels. Again, lottery odds.
So what I'm telling you is tough love. Imagine I'm shaking
you by the arms right now, trying to rattle some sense into
you like you're a fifteen-year-old child who got caught
taking the family car for a joy ride around the neighborhood.
What were you thinking?
"But I want to drive . . . now."
"You can't. You have to study the manual and take the test.
Get a permit and practice with a seasoned driver. You can't
just drive."
"But I want to drive . . . now."
Your first novel is your learner's permit. It's when you
grow from your mistakes, try harder, do over. You learn
under the watchful eye of those who know how. The second novel
is your restricted license. You drive on your own, but it still
isn't second nature to you, and you still haven't quite honed
that instinct. The third novel is your license.
As we all know, or should know, you are a fourth or fifth
novel author before you are taken seriously in this business.
It's also when you hopefully can count on your backlist to
help propel your latest.
Okay, fuss. That's not what you wanted to hear. So many
readers explain to me how they will start charities on
the proceeds of their first book, put their child through
college, quit work, pay off the mortgage, and quit the day
job.
I'm telling you the odds are against you. Now . . . do you
have what it takes to still write that story? And then
write the ones to follow? Because those people create their
own lottery.

WORDS OF SUCCESS
Nothing is more satisfying than to write a good sentence.
It is no fun to write lumpishly, dully, in prose the reader
must plod through like wet sand. But it is a pleasure to
achieve, if one can, a clear running prose that is simple
yet full of surprises. This does not just happen. It requires
skill, hard work, a good ear, and continued practice.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Hope,
I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how important
the Funds For Writer's emails are to me. And the amount of
information crammed into each new edition is so eagerly waited
on and gobbled up by dry-mouthed writers like myself.
A few months back there was an article/insert about how and
who to contact to get the exposure you need. In that article
among the many suggestions it mentioned to contact your local
cable company via Press Release - and I did. I should also
mention that I learned how to write and polish a properly
formatted and eye-catching PR on another FFW article!
I give you, and the FFW articles I look forward to perusing,
the credit for having this televised Neighborhood Journal
segment on local cable tv! It showcases my poetry series for
children called Fruit of my Labor and they did a great job
with it. It is now also on Youtube!
Thank you so much for providing the writing world with the
FFWs and the diligence you seem to have such an abundance
of that has no signs slowing down any time soon!
TECHNOLOGY AND RESUMES
By Donna Rodgers
Resumes remain an integral part of communicating career
experience, skills and potential to a new employer or
business partner. One-size-fits-all resumes won't help you
win in today's ultra-competitive career environment. Even
new graduates need a great resume. If you scored a competitive
internship in the past, that's a great accomplishment. Detail
what you learned in the role to add resume depth and texture.
Before you start. It's your responsibility to manage information
about you on the Internet. Update information on user-maintained
sites, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Plaxo and Jigsaw. For
frequently-quoted professionals with a large online presence,
use resources like Reputation.com to manage your profile.
If you're a super-secret resource (like a retained headhunter),
you also need a resume to market your experience to a new
employer. Don't add information about work-in-progress to an
Internet-accessible resume without client permission. Some
clients love publicity but others don't.
Write a dynamic resume. Many job seekers want help with resume
form and language. Avoid canned phrases, like "team player" or
"bottom-line and results-oriented professional." Craft a resume
using excellent communication skills. Sites like ResumeCompanion
provide fresh formats and styles needed to get your resume
selected for the interview queue. If you want to distribute
your resume to many career sites, use ResumeRabbit to accomplish
the task.
Add voice clips. While the debate continues about whether senior
candidates should submit a video resume, think about adding a
voice clip. Create a voice clip using Windows Media Player or
purchase a Cogi.com subscription. Attach your voice clip as a
separate file with your resume or application. Hiring managers
don't have unlimited time to read resumes. A 30- to 60-second
voice clip sends the professional appeal of you along with your
resume.
Make a video resume. Short and simple video resumes make the
best impression with hiring managers. Hiring a professional
videographer for your resume can cost up to $250, according to
WorkBlast.com. Make your own video resume for free. Some basics:
look into the camera, speak clearly and dress professionally,
suggests Treeline Incorporated's Dan Fantasia. "Stay confident
in your job search, and reach out directly to the hiring manager
of each position. When you send a resume through a resume portal
without making contact, your resume may fall into a black hole!"
Add a VisualCV. Pull your body of work together with VisualCV.
Link videos, webinars, books, articles, presentations, blogs and
tweets to a resume. Your prospective employer or business
colleague wants to know about you, and they're going to perform
a cursory Google search. Link your digital fingerprints to
achieve the most desirable result.
Update a Social Resume. One-dimensional resumes fall flat when
compared to the three-dimensional perspective offered by social
resumes. LinkedIn offers an application to download your social
resume to a PDF file. Combine your social resume with a video
resume for a powerful demonstration of how you think and what
you've accomplished.
Putting It All Together. Use technology to network, think
outside the box and use your assets to deepen a personal brand.
Technology won't take the place of performing all the steps
necessary to identify new opportunities, employers and business
partners. Technology will make introducing your phenomenal
abilities to these targets much easier.
WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places: the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!
=====
ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS
Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we
were currently accepting submissions. It had been exactly 24
hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,
chapters, entire manuscripts --- the influx has just now slowed
down. We received way over forty responses to our ad, and they
are still pouring in. (BTW, this is a very good problem!). Just
wanted to let you know we think you and your newsletter rock!
It's just amazing and lets us know just how loyal your fans are.
