DOING LESS DOES MORE

I periodically receive requests from readers. Requests to
address issues. Those emails always humble me. Like my advice
rocks the world. Of course, I always try to oblige, because
FundsforWriters readers are the best.

"Would love you to address how we writers keep from overdoing.
I wonder how others keep from hurting themselves by doing too
much of a good thing. I deal with carpal tunnel and struggle
with ways to write without actually writing. I do so much
with my writing that I have forgotten how to think without
a pen in my hand."

Between you and me, I'd go bonkers being unable to write.
At least until I recovered from the initial shock. Then I'd
relish the reprieve. Some writers seek time to write. I
struggle leaving the keyboard, and thank God that I do not
have carpal tunnel. I shoot upa prayer for those who do.

But moderation is important. Burnout and physical strain
can make writing hazardous, often leading us into a love/hate
relationship with what should be a joyous escape. Let me take
a stab at suggestions to keep physical agony out of writing.

1. Speech recognition software.
   I have two friends with impaired vision. They use voice
   recognition software. Windows Operating Systems have speech
   recognition already installed. Some versions of MS Word
   and Excel do as well. Windows designed these tools for
   those who want to limit their use of the mouse and keyboard.
   As with all Windows products, go to www.microsoft.com .
   Type "speech recognition" in the Search box to learn more.
   And of course, there are speech recognition programs like
   Dragon Speech as well.

2. Read.
   We postpone personal development of our writing skills
   claiming we don't have time. But when keyboard access
   is limited, crack open a book or fire up your e-reader.
   Read not only how-to books on your craft, but also books
   from experts in your genre. Geesh, I'd kill for several
   days of reading time. Fiction and nonfiction, I'd cram
   my head with knowledge, in hopes of regurgitating it to
   paper as soon as I could return to work.

3. Purchase top notch equipment.
   I do not compromise on my mouse or my chair, with my
   keyboard coming in a close third. In these items you get
   what you pay for. I suffered a mild hand sprain from
   overdoing with a bad mouse. Took me weeks to overcome the
   pain. Now I use an ergonomic, wireless mouse at a level
   that protects my wrist and hand. My chair might be seven
   years old, but it was not on sale for $79 at Staples.
   I use a lot of keystroke shortcuts in my work, so my left
   hand runs just as high a risk of joint damage, so I made
   sure my keyboard has easy hitting keys at the right height.

4. Set limits.
   To those of you who work excessive overtime, stop it.
   When I feel ache in my hands, I quit. Set a time limit.
   As an ex-Human Resource Director, I allowed a limited
   amount of overtime. Productivity deteriorates when you
   work twelve and fourteen-hour days. The mental exertion
   not only tires, but it short-circuits your creativity and
   editing ability. Full-time is forty hours a day, five days
   a week. Part-time might be just as damaging if you peck a
   keyboard during the day job then come home to write. You
   don't abuse your feet that way. Your hands might be more
   forgiving, but they have their limits.

Writers push. They thrive on deadlines and marathon writing.
Once in a while is fine, but routinely over-doing will
impress nobody. Especially when you can no longer write.

WORDS OF SUCCESS

Oh it is only a novel . . . In short, only some work in
which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in
which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the
happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest
effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in
the best chosen language.

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, Hope!
Just thought I'd let you know that my sixth book (working
title "SERVAL SON: Spots & Stripes Forever" has been accepted
for publication by a boutique publisher.
I sent off the manuscript to the press's editor. About four
hours later, she emailed, "I love this book! I can give you
a million reasons why you should let us publish it."
Stunned, I emailed right back, "Fire away!"
The contract is a dream for a writer.
Since I worked in the animal welfare industry for decades,
and the book is animal-related, I have sent the manuscript
to several high-profile animal advocates. To date, most have
agreed to officially pre-endorse, review, or write a foreword
for it.
So that's happening as I write you. It's all happening so fast!
The book will debut on September 1st. This year!
This little email is simply to thank you for keeping the burr
under my saddle so I'll never be happy until I've told all the
stories and lessons that life has taught me along the way. My
goal is to "die empty," having said all I need to say before
I croak.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for crackin' the whip, telling
it like it is, and Mother-henning us to keep going...keep
writing...keep believing that what's inside each of us is
worth at least one book... and probably several!
WRITE ON(LINE): ONLINE WRITING COURSES
By Donna R. Dolan
The importance of strong written communications skills
persists in today's digital media society. Is an online
writing course right for you? If you live far from a college
or university, work at home, work well independently, or
can't devote the block of time to an in-class experience,
perhaps. This article surveys the leading associations'
non-credit online writing courses. (Most offer a certificate
upon course completion.)
In an online writing course, there may be a lecture component.
All assignments are submitted and critiqued online, and you
progress through the course at your own pace. (There may be
some scheduled components of the course).
Writers' College  ( www.writerscollege.com ) offers the most
courses --about 60-- from grammar to specialty courses in
all genres such as Dialogue, Gothic Writing, and  Nonfiction
Book Proposals. Costs range from $50 for a one-week seminar
to $120 for a four-week, $180 for a six-week, and $240 for
an eight-week course. Most courses are in the $120 and $180
range.
Writers' College is for you if you dread being critiqued.
Only the teachers (all writers themselves) comment on your
work. There is no critiquing by your fellow students. Courses
are relatively inexpensive and they offer a 10-day, no-
questions-asked refund policy so you can check out a course
with confidence.
Gotham Writers' Workshop at www.writingclasses.com is a
private creative writing school. Professional writers
present workshops in more than a dozen genres of writing.
The school's interactive online classes have been selected
as "Best of the Web" by Forbes.
Gotham offers about 25 online classes and confer CEU credits
in Fiction Writing, Memoir Writing and Screenwriting. This
simply certifies that students have taken 5-6 classes in that
one genre - including a Master Class for advanced writers.
Costs range from $125 for a one-day intensive class to $545
for a 10-week master class. Specialized  11-week writing
classes in partnership with the New York Times are available
in Food Writing, and Travel Writing, for example, for $495.
There is also a $25 registration fee. Any 10-week class can
also be taken privately with an instructor, or you can work
with a mentor for several hours. Gotham offers the most
options for course format including taking on-site courses
in New York City.
Group critique is an integral part of all Gotham's 10-week
classes. They've developed a formal process for critiquing
which helps facilitate discussion and gets everyone involved.
They call it "The Booth." And you can read about it on their
website. Level I workshops are limited to 16 students. Level
II classes are limited to 14 students, and Master Classes to
6 students.
Coffeehouse for Writers (www.coffeehouseforwriters.com) lists
21 online courses. Most courses cost $80 and run 4 weeks.
Courses range from grammar to blogging, and their scope
includes both fiction and non-fiction.  Courses provide
online feedback from the instructor and advice from fellow
students. There are two lessons and at least one assignment
per week. Refunds are available during the first five days
of the workshop. Courses begin at a scheduled day once a
month.
The Writers Studio (www.writerstudio.com) online courses
sprang up because students were interested in taking the
courses, but were outside New York City where the studio was
founded. The studio lists six online courses at five levels.
You must start in either level I or level II and get permission
of instructor to move on to the upper levels. The levels are
based on the developmental stages in writing that all writers
go through. The focus of the Writers Studio is to discover
and develop your persona in writing.
Courses run 10 weeks, enroll 12 students and cost between
$350-$470. Each student receives online feedback on the
exercises from the instructor and fellow students. In an
online chat, class members discuss the weekly assigned reading.
The Writers Studio focuses on writing, but not in a particular
genre except for their Poetry course. A private tutorial
option is also available.
Browse the workshop websites to find more information and
choose an online writing course that's right for you.
WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledgling business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places:  the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!
ANOTHER FANTASTIC REASON TO ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS
 Chalet Publishers, LLC, ran an ad ONE TIME in announcing we
 hours since the newsletter and the ad were distributed. Queries,
 chapters, entire manuscripts --- the influx has just now slowed
 down. We received way over forty responses to our ad, and they
