CONTENT MILLS - BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY (KIND OF)

Nannette Croce pleaded with me for a chance to write a piece
on positively writing for content mills - eHow, Suite101,
Demand Studios, and similar sites that pay writers to cover
a gazillion topics to support advertising revenue.

Anyone who has read FundsforWriters for a year or more, knows
that I'm against them. They initiated a wave of attitude, in
my opinion, that now prevails across the web in freelance job
sites.

Write ten 50-word pieces for $20.
Blog for us for ad revenue, and get exposure.
Write twenty pieces for $2-$5 each.

You know those markets.

But Nannette wanted to show how the content mill sites work,
and while you won't get rich, she says they serve a purpose.
I agreed, forewarning her I wasn't a fan. She understood and
even wrote me this once I paid her for the below article:

<<Thanks Hope. I'm taking the day off tomorrow since you just
paid me ten times what they pay me to edit one article for
Demand Studios and three times what I'd get paid to write one.

Nannette Croce>>

Well, I'll let that sink in for a moment. To put dollars to
that, in case you don't know what I pay writers for their
articles, I pay $45 by check or $47 via PayPal for a 500-600-
word feature for FundsforWriters newsletter. The pieces don't
take a tremendous amount of research.

That means Demand Studios pays $4.50 (or less) for someone
to edit articles, and $15 (or less) to write an article.
And Demand Studios pays more than the others.

So here you go - both sides of the story. With the facts
you can make a more solid decision . . . and assume all
the responsibility.

                                                                    Hope

WORDS OF SUCCESS

"Something in human nature causes us to start slacking off

SUCCESS OF THE WEEK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Hope,
A year ago we corresponded for several days, back and forth,
about the possibility of you reading my partial manuscript
for my memoir-in-progress. You likened my style to that of an
unpolished, verbose version of Erma Bombeck and gave me some
invaluable tips about improving my writing.  Thank you.
Long story short, just last Tues, Jan 11, I had my talk radio
debut on Dana Hilmer's Lifestylemom Radio Cafe and since then
have been invited onto another talk radio show. Granted, it's
not the Today Show or CNN and I still don't have two dimes to
rub together, but I am thrilled and grateful to experience the
winds of change. My personal story and the stuff of which my
memoir is made is tragic, yet inspiring.  I am thankful I went
through "hell" to now be able to write about it and give hope
to others in crisis. I guess we never know that our suffering
will someday be the fodder for our future work and source of
inspiration to others. I would do anything to bring my little
brother back, but the notion of helping others is comforting
and takes the edge off the pain. I believe there is always a
(divine) "method to the madness."
If you care to listen, I think it's not bad for a debut interview.
http://www.latalkradio.com/Dana.php
Jut click on the Jan. 11, 2011 show to hear mine.
Thanks for allowing me to reach out to you, and for graciously
offering a few words of encouragement and guidance when so many
others were slamming doors in my face.
Warmly,
Darah Zeledon aka The Warrior Mom
Is Content Writing for You?
By Nannette Croce
The pay is paltry and the rewards small. For experienced
writers content site writing isn't a step down; it's like
plunging off a cliff. Yet, as newsrooms close and freelance
markets evaporate, many writers find themselves considering
content sites to bolster waning revenues. If you are one of
them, you should know how they work.
What Is Content Writing?
Strictly speaking, the purpose of content writing is to generate
ad revenues. Advertising dollars have funded newspapers and
magazines since their beginnings, but with content sites the
relationship is more direct. The articles don't just attract
readers; the words in the articles generate ads -- typically
Google ads -- and readers clicking on those ads is what brings
in the money.
How Do They Pay?
Beyond that broad generalization, content sites vary widely,
particularly in their pay models. Some sites, like Suite 101.com,
pay through revenue share, that is, writers receive a portion of
income on every ad click. Others, like Demand Media Studios,
provide content for partner sites like eHow and pay writers a
flat fee per article. Another variation is Constant Content
that serves as a kind of Etsy where writers post work and sell
"Usage," "Unique," or "Full" rights at prices they set themselves.
The site takes a commission from each sale.
Can Content Writers Make a Living?
That depends on what you call a living. If you are a longtime
freelancer, prepare for sticker shock. Demand Media pays, on
average, around $15 to $20 to write to titles in their queue --
mostly how-to and informational -- with a 500-word maximum.
While you set your own prices on Constant Content, forget about
asking beyond $25 to $30 for "Usage." Prices for Full rights
sometimes go as high as $100, but you lose the copyright.
Revenue share is even trickier. Suite 101 allows writers to
post on just about any topic; however, an article could attract
thousands of readers and not one ad click, meaning not one penny
in revenue. One writer actually does earn between $2 and $4K per
month writing for Suite, but it requires a combination of
ad-generating content and thousands of readers who click on
those ads. The odds are stacked against most writers and topics.
Tips
If you're beginning to see content sites as your only option
-- and many are -- there are ways to make it work for you.
-Write for different sites. Demand Studios' pay is more
quantifiable, but you'll be writing strictly to format and
losing any copyright. At Suite and Constant Content the income
is less predictable, but, within guidelines, you can pick your
topics and your style, thus allowing you to stay at the top of
your writing game.
-Specialize in one or two areas. Once you get the format down,
you'll spend most of your time on research, and, contrary to
common belief, some sites, like DMS, do check facts. Cutting
down on research time improves your hourly rate.
-Forget repurposing. These sites want totally fresh content,
and while Suite allows you full rights after a year, when you
post on the site, it needs to be brand new.
-Take a pen name. Fact checked or not, none of these sites is
a resume booster. There's no value in advertising your
affiliation. It could, in fact, hurt.
Finally, don't be too hard on yourself. Yes, it's a step down
for many of us, but while you're sending out your resume or
queries that don't seem to generate as many jobs as they used
to, you still have to eat.
We're publishing novels, either standalone or as part of greater
series. We're not looking to publish your novellas, short stories
(individually or collected in book form) or non-fiction. All our
books are "genre" fiction in one way or another -- specifically
fantasy, science fiction, horror, and that new catch-all urban
or modern fantasy. We're looking for all types of sub-genre, so
for example, hard SF, space opera, cyberpunk, military SF,
alternate future history, future crime, time travel, and more.
We have no problem if your book mashes together two or more of
these genres, but they must have that genre foundation - no
thrillers with the merest touch of SF, for example. Our books
will be published in all English-language territories -- notably
the UK, US and Australia -- so we'll be buying rights to cover all
those.
NOTE: Usually requires agented submissions, but will be taking
UNAGENTED submissions during the month of March only.
 WHY ADVERTISE IN FUNDSFORWRITERS?
For my first advertising for my fledging business I needed to
make strategic choices within a very limited budget. I chose
to advertise in two places:  the Funds for Writers (FFW)
newsletter and a major writer's magazine (circulation of 100,000).
FFW far outperformed the magazine! From my first FFW ad I got an
immediate and enormous spike in traffic to my web site and within
24-hours had more than 100 people sign up on my website. And that
was just the first ad! Over the course of the six-week ad campaign
I saw a noticeable spike in traffic after each ad hit people's
inboxes and in total garnered at least 500 new sign-ups.
If you're thinking about advertising in FFW, do it!
